While impaired driving deaths in Louisiana have dropped almost 38% from 375 in 2007 to 234 in 2013, more than 40% of the total fatalities still involve alcohol and/or drugs. As traffic safety partners, we do our best to make sure drivers and road users are safe. Yet there s still so much for us to do. Labor Day is nearing, and it is one of the deadliest holidays for drunk-driving crashes. On behalf of the Louisiana Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) Communications Coordinating Council (CCC) in partnership with Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, Louisiana DOTD, Louisiana State Police, and the Louisiana Chiefs of Police Association, we, at the Louisiana Center for Transportation Safety (LCTS), invite you to help us spread the message: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. 3 2016 Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over SAMPLE PRE-CAMPAIGN NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: [Date] CONTACT: [Name, Phone Number, address] Note: Before filling in the names of the organization and organization spokesperson, you MUST contact them to obtain their permission to use their names in this press release, and you must get their approval for the language used in their quotes, and any changes or additions they may require. Only after this is done can you send out the press release. Officials to target impaired drivers through Labor Day with Drive Sober campaign [Local Law Enforcement Organization] Shows Zero Tolerance to end Drunk Driving In an effort to end drunk driving, local and state law enforcement agencies in Louisiana will join forces with highway safety officials and regional coalition leaders to mobilize and enforce the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign from August 19 through Labor Day September 5. The two-week, high-visibility enforcement and public information campaign is timed to coincide Labor Day holiday and the preceding weeks that many consider the final weeks of summer. Labor Day has become a dangerous time for America s roads, as many drunk drivers get behind the wheel after celebrating. For this reason, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is working closely with the state highway safety offices to provides grants for overtime enforcement The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission (LHSC) uses NHTSA s grant monies to provide funding for Louisiana State Police (LSP), Sheriff Offices and police departments working to curb impaired driving. Based on preliminary data, there were 351 fatal and injury crashes in Louisiana in 2015, 40 of which involved alcohol and seven people died. A year before that, there were 342 fatal and injury crashes, 49 involving alcohol and 11 deaths. While deaths during the Labor Day holiday in Louisiana between 2014 and 2015 saw a decline from 11 to 7, there s still much to do to stop drunk driving problem in the state [Insert quote from Louisiana Highway Safety Commission here] [Insert a statement from a law enforcement officer in your region. It could be a State Police commander, Sheriff or Police Chief.] As officials concerned about public safety, we do our best to make sure our motorists and all road users are safe. You can expect increased presence of police officers on our roadways. We will show zero tolerance for drunk driving, said [Local Law Enforcement Leader]. People need to understand that drunk driving is not only deadly, but it is illegal, said [Local Law Enforcement Leader]. Drunk driving is a massive problem in the country and in Louisiana, with more than 10,000 people dying annually. Drivers need to pay attention to their own driving, but also to others on the road who could be driving drunk, [he/she] added. It is your business. If you think you see a drunk driver, call us and let us know. LA SHSP CCC

4 During the enforcement period, there will be a special emphasis on drunk-driving enforcement. Local drivers should expect to see more patrol vehicles, sobriety checkpoints, and increased messaging about the dangers of drunk driving. This is an unacceptable problem. Drunk driving is selfish and dangerous. We want to increase awareness with this campaign, but also see lasting results of decreased drunk driving, [he/she] said. This is important to remember: do not trust yourself when you drink, said [Local Law Enforcement Leader]. You may think you aren t drunk, but law enforcement will know you are. Law enforcement officers skills in detecting and identifying drunk drivers have never been better. They will spot you and arrest you. This August, and every day, remember: there is never an excuse to drink and drive. If you choose to break the law, [Local Law Enforcement Organization (s)] will see you before you see them. Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. The Drive Sober campaign is one of Louisiana s Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) implementation efforts to help reach its goal of Destination Zero Deaths. Nine regional safety coalitions implementing the SHSP across the state are working hand in hand with their respective State Police troops and local law enforcement agencies, who are active partners of the coalitions, to get the safety message out. To help spread the word, the Louisiana Department of Transportation of Development (DOTD) will deploy its Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) to remind everyone to drive sober. The SHSP s Communications Coordinating Council (CCC) is working with LHSC, DOTD and State Police to coordinate messaging efforts across the state. The Louisiana Center for Transportation Safety (LCTS) or the Safety Center disseminated a Call to Action to local police department leaders and SHSP coalition champions at the recently held Louisiana Association of Chiefs of Police (LACT) Conference in Lake Charles. The Safety Center will be disseminating this call through the regional safety coalitions. Nationally, NHTSA has even made it easier to get home safely when you ve been drinking, with the free SaferRide mobile app, available through itunes and Google Play. The app allows you to call pre-selected contacts or a taxi, and also identifies your location so you can be picked up. As a concerned citizen, and at the same time, a coalition leader, I encourage everyone to please plan ahead before you go out to celebrate Labor Day or any holiday. Designate a sober driver or call a cab. Whatever you do, do not drink and drive, said [Regional Coalition Coordinator or Champion]. Only after this is done can you send out the press release. [Local Law Enforcement Organization] Arrested [##] Drunk Drivers During Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign This past Labor Day holiday period, [Law Enforcement Organization] partnered with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission (LHSC) and the [Name of the SHSP Regional Coalition] in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over drunk-driving enforcement campaign. From August 19-September 5, local law enforcement showed zero tolerance for impaired driving, arresting [XX] offenders for the deadly crime. [Law Enforcement Organization] ramped up its usual enforcement efforts, adding [insert number of local checkpoints and/or additional units if applicable]. The [Local Law Enforcement Leader] said that by removing [XX] drunk drivers from the roads, many lives were likely saved. For us, saving one life would make the campaign worthwhile, said [Local Official]. We wanted our local citizens to know that we do not tolerate drunk driving. Our law enforcement was out in full force, pulling over and arresting drivers who were under the influence. We wanted people to know the message: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, [he/she] said. Through TV, radio, social media, and outdoor messaging, the high-visibility enforcement campaign aimed to increase awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. According to NHTSA, this aggressive approach has proven effective in the past for enforcing other types of traffic safety laws, such a seat belts and speeding. We encourage anyone heading out for the night to please plan a safe ride home before you take the first sip, said [Local Leader]. This is a key to preventing drunk driving. If everyone planned ahead, lives would be saved. There is never a safe time to drink and drive, said [Local Law Enforcement Officer]. In partnership with NHTSA, we ask everyone to please consider the deadly consequences of their actions. Remember: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, every day of the year. The Drive Sober campaign, initiated by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), was an effort to support Louisiana s Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) implementation to reach its goal of Destination Zero Deaths For more information on local traffic safety initiatives in Louisiana, you may contact or visit [insert your contact information here] For more information on drunk driving in the United States, visit trafficsafetymarketing.gov.
