Westminster Drug Project works with the Core Trust on Core Kids offering activities and workshops where affected families can talk about their problems in a supportive environment. By helping them to work together to improve their home life the project enables the adults to become more effective parents so that their children can lead safer and healthier lives. Alcohol misuse can have a devastating effect on families. It's strongly linked to domestic abuse and child neglect. Bristol Drugs Project works with families struggling with substance misuse issues. Through individual and group work and a mentoring system for the children, the project helps the whole family to take positive steps towards building a better future. CASA 175,228 London Young people who live with parents with drug or alcohol problems are often neglected, which can affect their self esteem and happiness. CASA gives vulnerable young people in Islington the crucial help and support they need to cope with parental alcohol and drug misuse. Alcohol Concern 170,264 UK/ Wide Deaths from liver disease have risen sharply amongst people aged between 25 to 34 in the past decade. This is thought to be a consequence of young people consuming excessive amounts of alcohol at an earlier age. Alcohol Concern works with organisations and government to help ensure that young people across the country learn about the risks of excessive drinking. Through being informed, young people are able to make knowledgeable

2 choices about their future and trends in drinking can be indentified that will help to inform future government policy around alcohol. National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACOA) 158,562 UK/ Wide Children of parents who are alcoholics need somewhere to turn for help and support. The National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACOA) runs a national helpline to provide direct support to some of the most vulnerable young people in the country. Edinburgh Cyrenians Trust 157,234 Scotland Life on the streets can be extremely tough for a young person who is homeless. For some, using alcohol or drugs may seem like the only way to escape their problems. Edinburgh Cyrenians Trust provides training to people who work with vulnerable teens, giving them the practical and emotional tools to support these young people in overcoming the complex challenges they face. With this help they can begin to turn their lives around. HMM Arts 146,618 West Midlands In Volve Surrey Young People's Service ADFAM National 143,558 UK/ Wide Binge drinking is a growing problem among young people across the UK. Many who drink regularly are unaware of the dangerous effect alcohol can have on their health, relationships and their community. HMM Arts runs music workshops at local youth centres which engage young people and enable them to develop an understanding of the effects of alcohol. The project also helps to direct young people to specialist services where they can get help when needed. This provides them with new skills and the opportunity to share what they have learnt with others. 146,561 South East There has been an increase in alcohol related incidents and binge drinking across Surrey with increasing numbers of young people being seen in casualty department's suffering from alcohol poisoning. Involve links the five A&E departments in the county, providing information/advice and referral to young people and alcohol training to staff. Ensuring that young people drinking at dangerous levels get the support they need. One of parents' biggest worry about family life is the risk to their children from drugs and alcohol and they feel ill equipped to deal with these issues, are uninformed about drug and alcohol culture and are unaware of where to turn for help. In addition between 250,000 and 350,000 children are effected by their parents substance use. Adfam is the leading national organisation working with, and for, families affected by drugs and alcohol. They provide direct support to families through publications, training, prison visitors' centres, outreach work and signposting to local support services. With the right support, they are better able to rebuild their lives. Bridgewater YMCA Foyer 121,302 South West Bridgewater has worse than average problems concerning alcohol and young people. The YMCA runs a project to offer a service to young people who have problems with alcohol use. This enables them to think about their use of alcohol and reduce their drinking, allowing them to take more control of their lives. Haringey Advisory Group on Alcohol 120,658 London A significant number of young people are at risk of alcohol misuse in Haringey, where most work focuses on services for adults. To address this, Haringey Advisory Group on Alcohol educates young people on alcohol and its effects. They also train parents, teachers, community workers, and other professionals to identify and work with young people at risk of

This project pays for an alcohol outreach worker to help educate young people about alcohol and to train those working with young people to understand more about the issues. This leads to a reduction in alcohol misuse and improved support. The Bridge (Oxford) Limited 119,591 South East An increase in the number of people with alcohol misuse problems in Oxford city highlighted the lack of specialist services available. Isle of Man Alcohol Advisory Service The Children's Society National Practitioners Network Ballymena Family and Addicts Support Group 119,475 North West The Isle of Man is one of the top five countries for teenage drinking and drug use with an average of six young people each weekend attending A&E because of alcohol overdose. The Alcohol Advisory Service provides an outreach worker to support young people and help them to understand the impact of alcohol on their lives and make more positive choices. 118,674 London It is estimated that about 350,000 children have parents with serious drug problems in the UK, which can have a devastating impact on the young person's life. Some can grow up to develop drug habits too. The Children's Society trains organisations to deal with the issue so that young people get the vital support they need. 118,150 Northern Ireland Deaths from liver disease have risen sharply amongst people aged 25 to 34 over the past 10 years. The Matthew Project outreach workers provide information, advice and individual support to young people aged 11 21, increasing their awareness of the dangers and effects of alcohol on health and self esteem. Addaction 116,030 London Under age drinking leads to anti social behaviour and contributes to poor physical and mental health. Addaction works with vulnerable young people and the people who support them in tackling alcohol misuse. Together, they uncover patterns of behaviour and find solutions so that young people are better able to make positive choices in the future. Foundation ,879 London Many young people leading difficult lives turn to alcohol as a way to cope with their experiences. Some may have experienced abuse, others may be homeless and many have mental health problems. Most young people who turn to drinking will become isolated as they struggle to deal with the problems in their lives. Foundation 66 works with vulnerable young people in Central London, supporting them to develop the practical and emotional tools to overcome the complex challenges they face. The individual and group work, helps them to turn their lives around and work toward a positive life ahead. Turning Point (SHED Project) 115,473 Yorkshire & Humberside Yorkshire and Humberside has seen a steady increase in problematic alcohol use by local young people. SHED offers support to young people with drug and alcohol problems, giving them better access to appropriate services and faster assessment and treatment. Rainer 115,000 South East Over the last few years, across Surrey, there has been an increase in the amount of binge drinking by young people. Rainer provides a specialist alcohol worker to enable young people to get help and support, leading to a reduction in the amount of binge drinking and therefore

Two part time Youth Outreach Workers provide information, advice and individual support to young street drinkers aged and help to increase their awareness of the dangers and effects of alcohol. Brook London 110,000 London The link between alcohol misuse and risky sexual behavior is well established. Brook London provides alcohol and sex workshops and gives one to one support to vulnerable young people. By being informed about the risks of sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies, they are able to make healthier choices about the way they lead their lives. Groundwork Pennine Lancashire Trust 108,349 North West For many young people with alcohol problems, support from a trained youth worker is crucial in helping them to overcome their excessive drinking. Groundwork Pennine Lancashire Trust works with vulnerable young people, helping them to make better informed and healthier decisions so they can get their lives back on track. The Space KC 108,000 London Increasing numbers of young people are misusing alcohol and getting involved in risky behaviour. Space KC runs a project for year olds who misuse alcohol, targeting young offenders, care leavers and young people at risk of sexual exploitation. This has led to a reduction in risky behaviour and problematic drinking, and in more young people making informed choices around safe drinking. Glasgow Council on Alcohol 106,228 Scotland In disadvantaged areas where alcohol abuse is common, drinking can be accepted as the norm for young people. Glasgow Council on Alcohol offers vulnerable children a range of support services to help them cope with their use of alcohol. Counselling and group work sessions encourage young people to work towards short and long term goals while building confidence in their ability to cut down on drinking and make positive decisions about their future. Castlemilk Youth Complex 105,706 Scotland Many young people who binge drink regularly don't realise the dangerous effect alcohol can have on their health, education and communities. Castlemilk Youth Complex runs a drop in

7 centre for young people who are at risk of alcohol misuse. The individual and group work helps them to make better informed and healthier decisions so that they can look toward a brighter future. The Budshead Trust 103,420 South West Binge drinking amongst young people is a growing problem in some areas of North West Plymouth. Many who drink regularly are unaware of the damaging effect alcohol can have on their health, relationship and community. The Budshead Trust runs drop in, one to one sessions and weekly outreach sessions for vulnerable young people. They also provide training to other organisations to recognise the signs and give the best possible support. The project is crucially important in helping young people to understand the impact drinking has on their lives and make informed decisions about what to do in the future. Thirsk Clock 99,921 Yorkshire & Humberside Alcohol misuse amongst young people in Thirsk is rising and has led to an increase in drug use, fighting, crime and under age sexual activity. Yet awareness of the health impact of alcohol misuse is low. A team of youth workers help youngsters to identify their alcohol problems and other risky or anti social behaviour and gain access to specialist treatment. Action for Change 99,750 South East Under age drinking leads to anti social behaviour and contributes to poor physical and mental health. This project works in partnership with Youth Offending Teams, Schools and Colleges across East Sussex to ensure staff give effective information and advice about alcohol. The increased skills and knowledge of staff working with young people has led to a reduction in under age drinking. Sutton Coldfield YMCA 99,648 West Midlands In Sutton Coldfield, young people who turn to drink and hang about in gangs are harming themselves and having a negative impact on the local community. Sutton Coldfield YMCA has eight youth workers out and about on the streets, working directly with young people to reduce alcohol abuse and self harm and to improve their experiences in education. Ruchill Youth Project 99,538 Scotland Under age binge drinking in a highly disadvantaged area of North Glasgow has led to an overall increase in court appearances for anti social activities. The Ruchill Youth Project aims to reduce under age drinking by giving young people the necessary skills and confidence to help them not to feel pressurised into drinking and to challenge the perception of alcohol being fun and acceptable. Rhyl Youth Action Group 99,085 Wales Many young people who binge drink regularly don't realise the dangerous effect alcohol can have on their health, relationships and education. Rhyl Youth Action Group runs workshops and activities for young people who are at risk. The sessions help them to make better informed and healthier decisions so they are more able to reach their full potential. Addiction Recovery Agency 97,625 South West Youth binge drinking is a growing problem in some areas of Bristol, with many who drink

8 regularly unaware of the dangerous effect alcohol can have on their health, relationships and education. The Addiction Recovery Agency runs workshops for vulnerable young people and the people who support them in tackling alcohol misuse. Together, they uncover patterns of behaviour and find solutions so that young people are better able to make positive choices in the future. Phoenix Futures 90,922 London Phoenix Futures works with young people who have become involved in anti social behaviour as a result of excessive drinking. By getting involved in positive activities, they learn new skills to help them get their lives back on track. With this extra support, they can make life better for themselves and those around them. Drum Housing Association 77,196 South East Drum HA provides accommodation and support for young people, many of whom are particularly vulnerable due to their age. They provide one to one support on issues such as drug/alcohol use, mental health problems, financial difficulties and abuse. The project works to improve the young people's self esteem and coping skills, and to reduce people being evicted from the accommodation. Alcohol Support Limited 74,660 Scotland There is a growing problem of alcohol abuse amongst young people in certain areas of Scotland. Alcohol Support Ltd helps children to drink more safely and to become less reliant on alcohol, and improves the way young people with alcohol problems are supported by youth workers and the police. The Abingdon Bridge Young People's Drop in Centre Young Persons Advisory Service 73,940 South East In neighbourhoods where there are few affordable activities for young people to get involved with, incidents of binge drinking and anti social behaviour can be high. The Abingdon Bridge Young People's Drop in Centre helps local young people to understand the effects of excessive drinking. They also support those with dependence issues to access services that will address their problems. Through the project, young people in the area are better able to understand the impact drinking has on their lives and make informed decisions about what to do in the future. 69,811 North West Drugs and alcohol abuse affects many areas of young people's lives including their health, housing, education, training, and employment. YPAS provide counselling, support, advice and information for young people in Merseyside so they can move away from drugs and on with their lives. Cranstoun Drug Services 66,237 South East Young people in rural areas who have problems with drugs or alcohol often lack information and services. Cranstoun provides a number of treatment services in Hampshire so that many more young people can get the information and support they need, to achieve better at school and have more choices.

9 Mind in Tower Hamlets 63,390 London Some young people have a particularly difficult time when they are growing up and experience mental health problems which need professional help. They can feel vulnerable and unable to say what they need and want. Mind in Tower Hamlets supports mental health service users to make their own decisions and specifically works with young people so they are not alone. YMCA Barnard Castle 62,210 North East Growing up in rural areas with few affordable activities and limited public transport can have a negative impact on a young person's life. They'll have few opportunities to learn new skills and can get drawn into binge drinking and anti social behaviour. YMCA Barnard Castle runs a much needed outreach programme for vulnerable young people in the area. The individual and group support helps young people to understand the impact drinking has on their lives and their structured activities offer an alternative to hanging out on the streets. By getting involved, the young people are able to build their confidence and learn valuable skills for the future. PACE (Project for Advice Counselling Education) 62,000 London A young person who grows up thinking that they might be lesbian, gay or bisexual often faces a pretty tough time as they may encounter stigma, bullying or rejection which can leave them feeling isolated, confused and vulnerable. PACE offer a service to help young people who are feeling at crisis point through the provision of one to one support. Cumbernauld YMCA YWCA 61,250 Scotland Young people who complete drug rehab programmes often end up misusing drugs again because of the difficulties in finding suitable housing, or getting into education or employment, and many become homeless. The YMCA help young people find suitable accommodation and provide them with intensive support in overcoming substance addiction. Cafads (Children and Family Alcohol & Drug Service) Orkney Alcohol Counselling and Advisory Service 45,400 London Alcohol and substance use are on the increase in the Muslim population in Tower Hamlets, which is creating huge issues in families and a great deal of concern that traditional family structures are beginning to break down. The Children and Family Service work with families affected by substance use as many family members are in need of support themselves. 40,025 Scotland Binge drinking is a growing problem amongst young people in rural areas across the UK. Many of these young people are unaware of the dangerous effect alcohol can have on their health, relationships and community. Orkney Alcohol Counselling and Advisory Service run workshops for young people where they learn about the impacts of drinking too much. The project supports them to make more informed and healthier choices.

10 Bridge Centre Motorcycle Project Fairbridge in Greater Manchester Outside Edge Theatre Company 35,742 Scotland In the rural areas of East Lothian, Mid Lothian and the Scottish Borders, there is a high incidence of under age drinking. Comic Relief funds the first project in the area to offer alcohol services to young people. The Bridge Centre Motorcycle Project provides a mix of offroad motorcycle riding and group alcohol workshops, helping young people to make better informed and healthier decisions. 30,000 North West In Greater Manchester alcohol abuse among young people is higher than the national average. Fairbridge works with some of the hardest to reach young people who are out of education, employment or training. Comic Relief funds a project to inform young people at risk about the issues around alcohol and introduce them to the specialist help available to them. 25,508 London Approximately 920,000 young people in care for parents who misuse alcohol. They face disadvantage, stigma and an increased likelihood of alcohol misuse themselves. Outside Edge Theatre Company runs an interactive theatre project, enabling young carers to examine their relationship with alcohol and make informed choices for their future.
