2 90.1% of UND students indicated that they have some problem with sleepiness during daytime activities. UND students believe that 7 out of 10 students smoke cigarettes, yet only 1 in 10 UND students reported using cigarettes in the past % of UND students reported use of contraception during the last time they engaged in vaginal intercourse. More than 1 in 4 UND students chose not to use alcohol in the past in 10 UND students indicated that proper nutrition is very important to their health. More than half of all UND students reported moderateintensity cardiovascular or aerobic exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes at least 3 times per week. 91.5% of UND students experienced average to tremendous levels of within the past year.

3 INTRODUCTION A student s health and wellness is very important and has a direct relationship with their academic achievement. When students are able to make positive decisions concerning their diet, exercise, and sleep or make responsible decisions about alcohol and other drugs, they will be safer, healthier, and more productive learners. The purpose of this report is to highlight the University of North Dakota (UND) students state of health and wellness based on survey data collected in 2014, with some trends from past years data. Data from the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA) was used in the analysis. In 2014, the survey had 944 participants, with an average age of This report includes topics such as alcohol and other drug use, nutrition, physical activity, as well as sexual, mental, and general health. The report also points out some trends regarding students health and wellness over time and includes comparisons between UND students health and wellness and the National Reference Group (NRG). Results from this survey are useful to UND in planning student programs, prioritizing campus needs, and allocating resources. It is also useful for designing strategies for interventions and identifying protective and risk factors associated with academic performance. The main goal is to improve students health and wellness and support their academic performance. These results are also helpful to the University for comparative analysis with other universities in the United States. HEALTH IMPEDIMENTS TO ACADEMIC SUCCESS Top Ten Issues Figure 1. Top 10 Issues Impacting Academic Performance (Past 12 Months) 23.6 Stress Sleep difficulties 18.0 Anxiety STRESS # 1 Stress was ranked as the number one health impediment to academic success by UND students. 15 METHODOLOGY The data presented in the current highlights report were derived from the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment Survey (ACHA-NCHA). The ACHA-NCHA is a national research survey organized by the American College Health Association to assist college health service providers, health educators, counselors, and administrators in collecting data about their students habits, behaviors, and perceptions on the most prevalent health topics. The survey contains questions on a broad range of health topics including alcohol and other drugs; mental, sexual, and physical health, and the connection between student health and academic success outcomes. The ACHA-NCHA has been administered to UND students every other year dating back to Survey results for the 2014 ACHA-NCHA and those of previous years have been used to generate prevalence rates for various student health and wellness behaviors, choices, and perceptions.
