1 Demographics and Health Data Information for Local Planners City of Puyallup, WA Demographic Characteristics Environmental Health Division 3629 South D Street, Tacoma, WA (253) Table 1 presents selected data for City of Puyallup, in comparison with the State of (WA) and Pierce County (PC), WA. Representing about 5% (36,974) of the Pierce County population, Puyallup is a community with: More seniors aged 75 and older (6.1%) than Pierce County (4.9%) and WA State (5.5%). A less ethnically-diverse population with more Whites (86%) than Pierce County (76%) and WA State (79%). A higher median household income ($61K) than Pierce County ($59K) and WA State ($59K). Fewer individuals living below 100% of the Federal Poverty Level (9%) than Pierce County (12%) and WA State (13%). 2 Health Outcome Data: Behavioral Risks and Mortality Table 2 shows Puyallup, as compared to State and Pierce County, experienced during 2006 to 2010: Higher prevalence of coronary heart disease (4.6%) and poor mental health days (11.4%) among adults. Lower prevalence of asthma (11.8%) among adults. Lower motor vehicle mortality (4.7 incidents/100,000 population). Lower rates of mortality due to Alzheimer s disease (41.5), diabetes (21.8) and intentional self-harm (suicide) (13.5). 3 Definitions Used in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) Obesity: an excessively high amount of body fat or adipose tissue in relation to lean body mass. Coronary heart disease (CHD): a number of diseases that affect the heart itself or the blood vessel system. In Table 1, the figure for CHD represents the percentage who responded YES to the question, Has a doctor, nurse, or other health professional ever told you that you had a heart attack, also called a myocardial infarction? Asthma: percentage who responded YES to the question, Have you ever been told by a doctor, nurse, or other health professional that you had asthma? Diabetes: percentage who responded YES to the question, Have you ever been told by a doctor that you have diabetes? Poor mental health days: percentage who reported their mental health was not good 14+ days in the past month.
