2 What is Self Harm? Deliberate damage to the body without suicidal intent. Cutting or Scratching Hitting body on hard surfaces, bruising Burning Drug or alcohol abuse Over exercising Deliberately neglecting to manage illness e.g. not taking medication Risk taking behaviours e.g. drink driving

3 Who is Affected by Self Harm? Around 1 in 10 young people report that they have engaged in self harm Research suggests self harm is more common in females than males, but there are issues around reporting incident of self harm for males People who have experienced emotional, physical or sexual abuse People who have a mental illness, such as depression or physical health problems People who live in a stressful family environment People who experience difficulties at school or work Anyone who is experiencing distress

4 Why do People Self Harm? There are lots of reasons. Broadly, Emotional regulation / manage intense emotions Punishment Communication Other Reasons

5 Why do People Self Harm?

6 Suicidality and Self Harm Self harm does not necessarily mean the young person is suicidal Self harm has a different function to suicidal behavior History of self harm is one of the major predictors of suicide The risk of serious injury leading to death Self-harming itself may be related to feelings of hopelessness and lack of control May injure themselves more severely if initial self harming fails to relieve their tension It is not always easy to tell the difference between self harm and a suicide attempt.

7 Warning Signs for Self Harm Psychological Signs Dramatic change in mood, relative to the individual Dramatic drop in performance and interactions at school, work or home Losing interest in friends and social activities Losing interest in favourite things or activities Withdrawing from usual life Changes in eating and sleeping patterns Self-blaming Physical or Behavioural Signs Unexplained injuries, such as scratches or burn marks Unexplained recurrent medical complaints, e.g. headaches Frequent use of drugs Pulling hair or picking at fingers or skin when upset or stressed Hiding matches, tablets, razors or other sharp objects in unusual places, e.g. under bed Avoiding situations where they have to expose arms or legs, e.g. swimming Wearing long-sleeves when inappropriate Strange excuses provided for injuries

8 How to Respond to Self Harm Self harm should always be treated seriously Sometimes stops naturally, e.g. after a period of exploration but at times professional help is required Interventions should target: Care and support Developing better coping skills

9 Things You Can Do React in a calm and supportive way, even if you don't feel calm! Manage your own reactions to self harm Ask the person if they have considered self harm, use direct questions Validate the young person s experience Make it safe for the person to talk to you about self harm Don t ask them to promise to stop or try to make them stop other ways Learn more about self harm Provide education about self harm and harm minimisation Get professional support, counselling or medical help if needed Be aware of your obligations such as informing school, family, care and protection Confidentiality
