They can be legal or illegal. Misuse of substances based on a feeling. o Emotional comfort o Need for excitement This is a short stage that progresses quickly if no one intercedes Stage One Abuse of s o Continues to use substances in spite of negative consequences. Jail Loss of job Loss of family Stage Two Dependency Tolerance is Developed o They need more to get the same high o They withdraw from others o Blame others for their problems o Very defensive Stage Three Lots of excuses and defensive of actions

2 Final Stage of Addiction o If they stop, it would cause withdrawal symptoms o All relationships have suffered or broken o Physically deteriorates o No money o No job o Feelings of hopelessness Stage Four Drug Abuse in our Churches Epidemic Proportions Involves our Teens to Senior Citizens Includes both Legal and Illegal Drugs Leadership Struggles in Knowledge and Understanding Stimulants Amphetamines Cocaine MDMA Meth Ritalin Methamphetamine Ice, crank, speed Imported from Mexico primarily Made in homes Can be made in a 2 liter bottle Highly addictive Methamphetamine Short term effects: o Euphoria, excitement, and high energy o Heart rate and blood pressure increase o Suppressed appetite o High that lasts 6 24 hours o Keeps you awake for long periods o crashes after the high, depression Methamphetamine Long Term Effects: o Brain damage o No longer experience the high o Paranoia, irrational, erratic, and dangerous o Obsessive behavior o Scratch their skin for meth bugs creating open sores
