Drugs Trends Drug trends are constantly changing Influenced by: Socio-economics Area in which a person lives Social Media Attitudes toward drug use Laws

Marijuana Current use by high school students has not increased despite the continued decrease in perceived harm of marijuana use. Cartel operated grows on public/private land. BHO Labs- Butane Hash/Honey Oil, it's how people are getting stronger, faster, more expensive, and arguably more dangerous THC highs (40-80%). Dabs, wax, earwax, honey, honey oil, shatter Edibles, baked goods.

Dangers of BHO Labs Highly volatile and flammable

Synthetic Cannabinoid Synthetic cannabinoids refer to a growing number of man-made mind-altering chemicals that are either sprayed on dried, shredded plant material so they can be smoked (herbal incense) or sold as liquids to be vaporized and inhaled in e-cigarettes and other devices. These chemicals are called cannabinoids because they are related to chemicals found in the marijuana plant. Because of this similarity, synthetic cannabinoids are sometimes misleadingly called "synthetic marijuana" (or "fake weed"), and they are often marketed as "safe," legal alternatives to that drug. In fact, they may affect the brain much more powerfully than marijuana; their actual effects can be unpredictable and, in some cases, severe or even lifethreatening. Spice/ K2

Prescription Drugs The classes of prescription drugs most commonly abused are: opioid pain relievers, such as Vicodin or Oxycontin ; stimulants for treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), such as Adderall, Concerta, or Ritalin ; and central nervous system (CNS) depressants for relieving anxiety, such as Valium or Xanax. 1 The most commonly abused OTC drugs are cough and cold remedies containing dextromethorphan. People often think that prescription and OTC drugs are safer than illicit drugs. But they can be as addictive and dangerous and put users at risk for other adverse health effects, including overdose especially when taken along with other drugs or alcohol. Before prescribing drugs, a health care provider considers a patient's health conditions, current and prior drug use, and other medicines to assess the risks and benefits for a patient.

Rx Drugs Continued Most teenagers who abuse prescription drugs are given them for free by a friend or relative

Fentanyl Fentanyl, a synthetic opiate painkiller, is a dangerous, powerful Schedule II narcotic responsible for an epidemic of overdose deaths within the United States. During the last two years, the distribution of clandestinely manufactured fentanyl has been linked to an unprecedented outbreak of thousands of overdoses and deaths (Singer- Prince OD). The overdoses are occurring at an alarming rate. Fentanyl, up to 50 times more potent than heroin, is extremely dangerous to anyone who may come into contact with it. Fentanyl is being sold as heroin, being put into marijuana edibles, and used in counterfeit Rx drugs.

Heroin Heroin is an opioid drug that is synthesized from morphine, a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seed pod of the Asian opium poppy plant. Heroin usually appears as a white or brown powder or as a black sticky substance, known as black tar heroin. Prescription opioid pain medications such as Oxycontin and Vicodin can have effects similar to heroin when taken in doses or in ways other than prescribed, and they are currently among the most commonly abused drugs in the United States. Research now suggests that abuse of these drugs may open the door to heroin abuse. Smack, Black Tar, Brown Sugar, Dope, Chiva, China White

Synthetic Cathinones Synthetic cathinones, more commonly known as "bath salts," are synthetic (human-made) drugs chemically related to cathinone, a stimulant found in the khat plant. Khat is a shrub grown in East Africa and southern Arabia, and people sometimes chew its leaves for their mild stimulant effects. Synthetic variants of cathinone can be much stronger than the natural product and, in some cases, very dangerous. Synthetic cathinones usually take the form of a white or brown crystal-like powder and are sold in small plastic or foil packages labeled "not for human consumption." Also sometimes labeled as "plant food," "jewelry cleaner," or "phone screen cleaner," people can buy them online and in drug paraphernalia stores under a variety of brand names, which include: Flakka, Bloom, Cloud Nine, Lunar Wave, Vanilla Sky, White Lightning

MDMA 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) is a synthetic drug that alters mood and perception (awareness of surrounding objects and conditions). It is chemically similar to both stimulants and hallucinogens, producing feelings of increased energy, pleasure, emotional warmth, and distorted sensory and time perception. MDMA was initially popular in the nightclub scene and at allnight dance parties ("raves"), but the drug now affects a broader range of users who more commonly call the drug Ecstasy or Molly. Ecstasy/Molly

Methamphetamine Methamphetamine is a central nervous system stimulant drug that is similar in structure to amphetamine. Due to its high potential for abuse, methamphetamine is classified as a Schedule II drug and is available only through a prescription that cannot be refilled. Although methamphetamine can be prescribed by a doctor, its medical uses are limited, and the doses that are prescribed are much lower than those typically abused. Most of the methamphetamine abused in this country comes from foreign or domestic super labs, although it can also be made in small, illegal laboratories, where its production endangers the people in the labs, neighbors, and the environment. Crystal, Crank, Ice, Speed, Tweek, Christina, Tina

Cocaine Cocaine is a powerfully addictive stimulant drug made from the leaves of the coca plant native to South America. Although health care providers can use it for valid medical purposes, such as local anesthesia for some surgeries, cocaine is an illegal drug. As a street drug, cocaine looks like a fine, white, crystal powder. Street dealers often mix it with things like cornstarch, talcum powder, or flour to increase profits. Blow, Coke, Crack, Rock

Social Media 24% of teens go online almost constantly, facilitated by the widespread availability of smartphones. Aided by the convenience and constant access provided by mobile devices, especially smartphones. 92% of teens report going online daily According to a new study from Pew Research Center. more than half (56%) of teens, ages 13 to 17, go online several times a day. Information highway what is new, current, and up incoming. With the good, you also get the bad and for the Drug/Narcotics world, it is always changing.
