Please provide a brief description of the program. So you're new to college, or been there for awhile, and still don't know what to do in the college party scene? Come to this program to learn about how to party safely and what to do if something goes wrong. This could help you save a life and has been taught to all freshmen at the University of CO! At the, we understand that many people will drink and go to parties that might not be what they are used to. This program was recently added to our orientation and was taught to all incoming freshmen for our alcohol safety lesson. I am a nationally certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and this program was created by all certified EMT's and a doctor. The purpose of this program is to teach the actual effects of drinking and what is actually happening to the brain and the body. This program was very successful on our campus and we saw a significant decrease in our patients that we have seen due to alcohol/alcohol poisoning. I understand that drinking might not be a problem on all campuses, but this program also teaches people what to do in medical situations. Delegates will learn how to respond to someone that they find unconscious and could help them save a life in the future. This program will address: common misconceptions about alcohol, some other ways to get involved and acclimated to campus life without drinking, what a standard drink is, the effects of multiple drinks, some national statistics about drinking, health risks and other risks, as well as how to respond to a person that's unconscious. This is a unique program because it recognizes that people do drink and party, and I want to make sure people know how to do it in a safe manner. 3. Who was the program for? Name your target audience. The target audience would have to be freshmen, or anyone new to partying. 4. How much did the program cost? Who funded it? Please provide a brief budget breakdown. This program cost about $5 for the 2 solo cups and 2 shot glasses I use in it. At my school, they pay for it, but for this conference I provided it.

2 5. How many people were involved in planning the program AND how long did it take to plan? Many people helped plan this originally, but you only need one person to present it. Since it s already made, it doesn t take that long to plan (just time to prep for it). 6. Why was the program started on your campus? How does it benefit the university and/or community population? This program was started on our campus because we had a problem with alcohol poisoning and even had a student die from too much alcohol. A group of students wanted to help other students learn the real risks and dangers as well as address how to appropriately party. Since this program has been implemented, we have had no significant problems and no one has died from drinking at parties. 7. What were some pros/cons of the program? How could the program be improved? A con is that this program does not promote abstinence from drinking. A pro would be that this program teaches people how to be safe and responsible at parties and in college. 8. How could this program be adapted for other universities? This program serves to be a good, informative program that is currently aimed at CU students. In order to adapt to other schools, statistics from that school could be used. 9. 22 How to be Safe Don t go out alone; always use the buddy system. Designate a sober observer and driver. If someone vomits, do not let them continue to drink Know when to call 911 Have the courage to call 911 Many student deaths are the result of concerned peers not making the call.
