Early Initiation of Drug Use
Early Initiation Among 7th Graders One way of monitoring changes in early initiation is to examine initiation of drug use among the youngest cohort of students, namely the 7th graders (ages 12-13). We asked students which grade they: o first smoked a whole cigarette o first drank an alcoholic drink o first tried cannabis
Early Cigarette Smoking Grade First Smoked a Whole Cigarette Among All 7th Graders, Grade 4 Grade 5 Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade at First Whole Cigarette Fewer 7th graders today tried smoking at an early age. For example, less than 2% of 7th graders in 2013 reported smoking their first whole cigarette before the end of grade 6, compared with 9% in 2003, 27% in 1997, and 41% in 1981.
Early Alcohol Use Grade First Drank Alcohol Among All 7th Graders, Fewer 7th graders today tried alcohol at an early age. For example, about 13% of 7th graders in 2013 used alcohol before the end of grade 6, compared with 31% in 2007, 42% in 2003, and 50% in Grade 4 Grade 5 Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade at First Alcoholic Drink
Early Cannabis Use Grade First Tried Cannabis Among All 7th Graders, Fewer 7th graders today tried cannabis at an early age. For example, in 2013 about 2% reported trying cannabis for the first time before the end of grade 7, compared with 9% in Grade 4 Grade 5 Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade at First Cannabis Use
Percentage of 7th Graders Reporting Smoking Cigarettes, Drinking Alcohol, and Using Cannabis in the Past Year, % Cigarettes Alcohol Cannabis
