Ethics and Professionalism in Addiction Service Marketing and Delivery 38 th Annual National Addiction Leadership Conference NAATP Ethics Committee Robert Ferguson Richard Pine Art VanDivier Marvin Ventrell NAATP 1 Monday, May 2, 2016

Professionalism and Ethics A Hierarchy of Conduct Professionalism High principles characteristic of individuals practicing in a profession of advanced learning. Traditionally: Law, Medicine, and Theology Guidelines Suggestive or Recommended Ethics Requires one to place integrity above self interest Punishable within the profession Law Requires one to follow the law Punishable by societal action 2 NAATP Monday, May 2, 2016

Source of Ethics: Values NAATP Values We value the history of significant contributions made by 12-step abstinence-based treatment We value residential treatment s vital, necessary and essential place in the full continuum of care We value a comprehensive model of care that addresses the medical, bio-psycho-social and spiritual needs We value research-driven, evidence-based treatment interventions that integrate the sciences of medicine, therapy and spirituality. We value abstinence from all abusable drugs as an optimal component of wellness and lifelong recovery. We value outcome data that assesses efficacy We value education and training that promotes understanding of a continuum of care that embraces these values. 3 NAATP Monday, May 2, 2016

The Need for Ethical Standards People can get hurt And Prevalence of harm 4 NAATP Monday, May 2, 2016

The NAATP Code of Ethics: PREAMBLE Just as personal responsibility and accountability are underscored in treatment for the recovery process, NAATP treatment providers shall assume such responsibility and accountability in their provision of treatment services, in their management practices, in their staff relationships, in their relationships with other publics, and in their marketing. Further, NAATP providers, member organizations, individual members and associate members will engage and do business only with other like-minded partners and organizations who themselves also abide by these basic ethical practices and standards. To help assure such responsibility and accountability, the National Association of Treatment Providers has this Code of Ethics. This code of generally acceptable ethical practices is seen as a dynamic statement that has the acceptance of each member and each associate member upon joining the association. 5 NAATP Monday, May 2, 2016

The NAATP Code of Ethics: FOUR AREAS 1. Treatment 2. Management 3. Facilities 4. Marketing 6 NAATP Monday, May 2, 2016

Marketing Financial rewards for patient referrals No financial rewards or substantive gifts are offered for patient referrals. Deceptive advertising or marketing practices Treatment providers will not engage in deceptive or misleading advertising or marketing practices. NAATP members and member organizations will not utilize any form of false or misleading advertising; will not engage in patient brokering 7 NAATP Monday, May 2, 2016

The New NAATP Complaint Process: Preamble The NAATP Ethics Complaint Policy and Procedure has been adopted for purposes of providing a mechanism for oversight of a member organization s compliance with the NAATP Code. Failure to comply with the Code is a breach of the requirements of NAATP membership and may be grounds for termination of a member as provided in this policy. The Policy and Procedure is grounded in the agreement between NAATP and its members whereby, upon becoming a member of the NAATP society, members not only agree to adopt and adhere to the Code, they also agree to the termination of their membership should they be found to have violated the code pursuant to this procedure. 8 NAATP Monday, May 2, 2016
