1 CHECK YOUR BODY S CONTROL PANEL A USER MANUAL TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND AND LOOK AFTER YOUR THYROID GLAND
2 THE THYROID GLAND YOUR BODY S CONTROL PANEL When the body s control panel is working too hard or too little a range of issues can occur. There are two main types of thyroid disorder: hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, both of which have different causes and effects: COMMON ISSUES THAT CAN OCCUR WHAT IS THE THYROID GLAND? Our bodies are made up of a series of complex systems, all working together to keep things operating smoothly. It can therefore be difficult to spot when things aren t running as they should: we sometimes are unable to recognize the warning signs that something isn t quite right, putting it down to the stresses of daily life. In today s modern world, it would be helpful if our bodies came with a warning system, which is the exact role of the thyroid gland: to act as your body s control panel. It works by regulating the distribution of hormones to ensure the body can operate at its optimum efficiency,1 and alerting you when they aren t it s just not always easy to spot these alerts. This booklet is a care manual for your body s control panel to explain in more detail the role of the thyroid gland and to help recognize the signs of a thyroid disorder. Many symptoms can go unrecognized as there can be many explanations for them. However, if you do have a thyroid disorder your doctor can help you find the right treatment, so you can be back up and running in no time. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland sat at the front of the neck, just below the Adam s apple.2 It is the control panel of metabolism; its job is to produce and distribute thyroid hormones, which are secreted into the blood and then carried to every tissue in the body. A properly functioning thyroid gland ensures the tissues and organs in the body are working properly and at the correct speed that, in turn, means the body is able to use energy, stay warm, and keep the brain, heart, muscles, and other organs working as they should.3 HYPOTHYROIDISM HYPERTHYROIDISM An underactive thyroid, known as hypothyroidism, occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones for the body to properly work and its metabolism slows down.1 An underactive thyroid is often caused by autoimmune disease, where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. This can damage the thyroid, which means it s not able to make enough hormones.1 Hypothyroidism can also be a side effect of treatment to the thyroid gland, such as surgical removal of part of the gland, or radiation treatment.1 Hyperthyroidism is the name given to an overactive thyroid, where there is too much thyroid hormone produced in the body. This means the body s functions and metabolic processes work faster than normal.2 The most common cause (in more than 70% of people) is a condition known as Graves disease.2 Graves disease is an autoimmune condition, meaning the immune system mistakenly attacks the body in this case the thyroid and causes it to become overactive.5 Another cause of hyperthyroidism is nodules developing on the thyroid. These lumps contain additional thyroid tissue, causing an increase in the total output of thyroid hormone into the blood.2 It is important to see a doctor to address any hypothyroid symptoms as left untreated these can become more serious.4 NOT ALL CONTROL PANELS ARE THE SAME One of the trickiest things when it comes to diagnosing a thyroid disorder is the wide range of symptoms it can cause and recognizing them for what they are. Due to its control panel role, a thyroid that isn t functioning properly can have all sorts of effects on the body, from physical symptoms such as dry skin and weight changes,6 to emotional ones such as excessive tiredness and irritability.7,8 Different people may also suffer different symptoms,3 thus making it all too easy to put these symptoms down to lifestyle. However, it is important to gain an understanding of these warning signs and if you are at all concerned to have your symptoms checked by your doctor. Hyperthyroid symptoms can cause serious complications if left untreated, so it s important to get them seen to by your doctor.5 HOW COMMON ARE THYROID DISORDERS? 1 Around 200 million people worldwide suffer from some form of thyroid disorder9 2 Thyroid disorders can affect both genders and all ages, although they are more common in women women are 10 times more likely than men to have an overactive or underactive thyroid5,10 3 T he thyroid gland can start to have problems as we age: ypothyroidism is mostly seen in women H between the ages of yperthyroidism is most common in H women aged between 20 40, but can occur at any age11
3 TROUBLESHOOTING SYSTEM ERRORS TABLE OF SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS WARNING LIGHTS: SPOTTING THE EXTERNAL PROBLEMS The external warning signs of a thyroid disorder can be the first thing people spot, so it s important to know what to look out for when diagnosing potential issues with your control panel: FAULT CODES: RECOGNIZING THE INTERNAL ISSUES Internal signals are just as important as the external ones. Recognizing feelings and emotions as potential signs of a thyroid disorder is important: WEIGHT GAIN/ CHANGES SKIN SWEATING HAIR EXCESSIVE TIREDNESS DIFFICULTY SLEEPING POOR CONCENTRATION AND MEMORY LOSS LACK OF MOTIVATION Sudden weight gain or loss, or a difficulty to gain and maintain weight altogether, can all be signs of a thyroid disorder 6,7 An underactive thyroid can lead to dry, itchy and flaky skin with coarse patches, due to the lack of hormones 6 The thyroid gland is closely linked to body temperature, excessive sweating can be due to an overactive thyroid, 7 as can feeling flushed and overly warm 7 Coarse, dry hair that breaks very easily can be caused by an underactive thyroid. 6 Hypothyroidism can also cause hair loss, which could affect eyelashes and eyebrows 7 Feeling overly tired can signal both an underactive and overactive thyroid; those suffering from hypothyroidism often feel run down, 6 and people suffering from hyperthyroidism can feel a burst of energy during the day, leading to exhaustion later on 7 Insomnia is also a sign of both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism; those suffering from underactive thyroid often cannot sleep despite excessive tiredness. 6,7 Racing thoughts, the feeling of restlessness and inability to sleep once you get into bed can be caused by overactive thyroid 6,7 If you find yourself struggling to remember things or to focus on a task, you could be suffering from an underactive thyroid. 6 If you struggle to concentrate on things due to a racing mind, this could be a sign of hyperthyroidism 7 If you re feeling lethargic and unmotivated it s worth looking at the possibilities of an underactive thyroid. 6 A lack of motivation is a common symptom of hypothyroidism 6 NAILS EYES SENSITIVE TO TEMPERATURE SEX DRIVE DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY IRRITABILITY Similar to hair symptoms, dry and brittle nails, that flake and break easily, can be caused by hypothyroidism 6 Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can cause eyes to feel dry and gritty 6,7 this can be particular uncomfortable if you work behind a screen A regular temperature is closely linked to a properly functioning thyroid. If you re cold when others are warm, or hot when others are cool, you could be suffering from either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism 6,7 Similarly to motivation, your sex drive can be affected by a thyroid disorder. If you find your libido is quite low you could be suffering from an underactive thyroid 6 whereas people who find their sex drive is high may be suffering from an overactive thyroid 7 In some cases, hypothyroidism can cause depression. 6 Hyperthyroidism can also cause anxiety. 7 Both of these symptoms should be taken seriously, so if you are at all worried it s important to see your doctor If you find yourself snapping at people for no reason, or feeling more annoyed about small things than usual, it s worth knowing that irritability is a symptom of an overactive thyroid gland 12
4 CRITICAL PERIODS TIMES TO PAY YOUR CONTROL PANEL PARTICULAR ATTENTION SERVICING YOUR CONTROL PANEL RUN YOUR DIAGNOSTICS LIFE STAGES There are certain times in our lives where our thyroid gland plays an even more important role. These are moments when we should pay closer attention to our control panel to ensure everything is working as it should and, if not, what the key indicators to look out for are: TRYING FOR A BABY AS YOU GET OLDER DURING HEARING PREGNANCY DIGESTIVE SYSTEM AFTER RECENTLY HEART GIVING BIRTH MUSCLES AND JOINTS It is important to know when trying for a baby that both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can affect fertility 6,7 The thyroid gland can also be affected during pregnancy, due to the thyroid changes that occur during pregnancy 13 After giving birth the thyroid gland can become inflamed, leading to abnormal hormone levels 14 Our bodies change as we age, and many of these changes can also be symptoms of a thyroid disorder. For example, hypothyroidism can cause hearing loss, 6 digestive problems (such as constipation, IBS and wind), 6 stiff joints and muscle cramps 6 and hyperthyroidism can lead to heart palpitations, 7 muscle aches, pains and weakness. 7 It s important to know the difference between the two. As this manual has identified, thyroid disorders bring with them a whole host of varying symptoms, many of which can be mistaken for every day niggles. It s important to understand how your thyroid works, in order to realize how vital it is to keep your body running at its best. As the control panel of the body, it too needs to be checked to ensure all is okay, so use these signs and symptoms as warning signs that perhaps all might not be right. If you have any concerns, or are experiencing any of these symptoms, don t hesitate to see your doctor. A simple blood test can tell you if your symptoms are the cause of a thyroid disorder. 16 If you would like to find out more about thyroid disorders, please visit the International Thyroid Awareness Week website: REFERENCES THE MENOPAUSE Many of the symptoms experienced during the menopause, such as fatigue, mood swings and sleeping problems, are also signs of hypothyroidism 15 and the two can often be mistaken 1.
