Skip the Cereal for Breakfast The Environment Working Group recently released a report on breakfast cereals Cereal marketed to children contained 40% more sugar than adult cereal All children s cereals contained added sugar Most contained 30% of a child s total sugar intake for the day Several brands were more than 50% sugar (by weight) including Kellogg s Honey Smacks
Eggs The Perfect Breakfast Food Eggs are one of the most nutritious foods on the planet Eggs DO NOT increase cholesterol levels In 70% of people, egg consumption had NO effect on cholesterol, in 30% of people there was a very small increase in total cholesterol. In one study, two eggs daily for 6 weeks increased HDL cholesterol by 10%! More importantly, egg consumption has been shown to change dangerous small, dense LDL cholesterol particles to the large, fluffy and not dangerous form In one study of 30 overweight women, eating eggs instead of bagels for breakfast increased feelings of fullness and made them automatically eat fewer calories for the next 36 hours In another study, replacing a bagel breakfast with an egg breakfast caused significant weight loss over a period of 8 weeks An egg contains a variety of vitamins and minerals, plus 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of healthy fats, and lutein, choline and zeaxanthin
Quick News Headline Brain Repair with Turmerones
Repair your brain with turmerones Curcumin has long been identified as the healthy compound in turmeric Researchers are also looking at other compounds in turmeric which are equally as healthy In a new study, scientists looked at the effects of turmerones the volatile oils from the turmeric root In this test, animals (rats) given turmerone. When their brains were scanned, researchers saw increased brain activity, especially in areas known as the brain s repair kit areas associated with nerve cell growth This is a very exciting finding if it works the same way in humans, this could be a new treatment for Alzheimer s and other diseases associated with brain cell degeneration
Overactive Bladder
Prescription Drugs for Overactive Bladder Consumer Reports recently reported that the seven prescription drugs available to treat overactive bladder are only modestly effective and have side effects that can limit their usefulness. Constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, blurry vision and drowsiness; mental confusion is a possibility, especially in older adults About 30 50% of people prescribed these drugs stop taking them within six months because they can t tolerate the side effects, or the side effects are not worth the minimal benefits
Solution for Bladder Problems in Men AND Women Angelica archangelica from Iceland Clinically studied to help reduce urinary frequency problems Shown to increase bladder capacity and reduce number of urinations at night, particularly in participants who had small bladder volumes What does this mean? Participants had to make fewer bathroom trips at night Fewer bathroom trips means better sleep and better rest
Uses for for Angelica archangelica Overactive bladder and Stress Incontinence BPH Nocturia (nighttime trips to the bathroom) Bed-wetting Interstitial cystitis How does it work? Effect on leukotrienes compounds which trigger smooth muscle contraction spasms, including in the bladder Inhibits leukotriene activity Inhibits leukotriene from binding to receptors No adverse effects on libido or testosterone levels
How to Use Angelica 200 mg to start (2 or 3 days); then reduce to 100 mg daily Can stay at 200 mg daily if desired For stress incontinence and daytime bladder problems, take in the morning For nocturia and nighttime bladder problems, take before bed No significant adverse effects
Brush Your Teeth Prevent a Heart Attack
Can a diseased mouth cause a heart attack? Research says YES There are over 700 million types of bacteria in the human mouth If you develop gingivitis (swollen gums) which start to bleed, this is like opening a door for bacteria, which can now get into your bloodstream and travel throughout your body The bacteria hide from the immune system on platelets, and can cause platelets to stick together A clump of platelets can block the blood vessels leading to a heart attack or stroke
Keep Your Mouth Healthy, Prevent a Heart Attack Concentrated plant oils - cinnamon, thyme, clove, oregano Directly kill harmful bacteria in the mouth and keep them out of the bloodstream Grape Seed Extract Stops the production of dangerous forms of nitric oxide by invading bacteria Keeps platelets from sticking together and causing a blocked blood vessel Strengthens gum tissue to prevent bacteria from having a doorway to the bloodstream
