1 Health Basics Start with EVALUATIONS TIME Part 1: 20 min. Part 2: 30 min. OVERVIEW OF LESSON To assist students in gaining skills and strategies for making healthy food choices, the instructor will demonstrate how to keep a 1-day food log using MyPlate as the evaluation tool. Students will then complete a self-evaluation of their diet and utilize key learnings to develop a plan for improving their eating habits. For end-of-unit evaluation, students will write a plan of action for including all food groups proportionally in the diet for three different real-life scenarios. OBJECTIVES The learner will be able to... Analyze their personal diet and strategize a personal improvement plan for getting the recommended servings from each of the food groups daily. Identify foods lacking in real-life scenarios and apply knowledge of food group and serving requirements to make diet recommendations COLORADO ACADEMIC STANDARDS Comprehensive Health and Physical Education: Analyze the benefits of a healthy diet and the consequences of an unhealthy diet Analyze how family, peers, media, culture and technology influence healthy eating choices THIS EVALUATION LESSON IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS. PART ONE IS A SELF-EVALUATION, WHICH WILL BE FINALIZED WITHIN TWO DAYS. PART 2, REAL-LIFE SCENARIOS, IS AN IN-CLASS WRITTEN EVALUATION. Part 1 MATERIALS NEEDED 1. MyPlate Tracker (page 2-4, one per student) 2. Real-Life Scenarios/Unit Test (see end of lesson, one per student) PREPARATION 1. 2 MYPLATE TRACKER Page 2 of 6 Record your meals and snacks for one day in the space below. List or draw each major food from that meal in the blank MyPlate icons provided. If you didn t eat a particular meal or snack, leave that MyPlate blank. BREAKFAST SNACK

5 LESSON Page 5 of 6 GUIDED LEARNING ENGAGE What did you learn about yourself as you kept track of your food choices for the day? Did you include one serving of dairy (milk, cheese or yogurt) with each meal? If not, did you make up for your dairy consumption with your snack choices - for a total of 3 servings daily? Was half of your plate fruits and vegetables at most of your meals? Did you also choose any fruits or vegetables at snack time? Did you include a source of protein with your meals? What protein foods would make good snacks? Was ¼ of your meals a grain (rice, potatoes, breads, pastas, cereals, etc.)? Did you choose whole grains more often? Did you get at least 2 Food Groups at each snack and at least 3-4 Food Groups at each meal? If not, what meal(s) did you have the most trouble? What influenced your food choices? Review your own personal food log, answering the questions. I need to improve. I will try. For the next two days, I will APPLY Have students share with a partner HOW they will improve their eating habits for the next two days, sharing specific strategies EVALUATE To complete this assignment, students will answer the following question: 1. Reflection statements. If I kept this pattern of eating for the rest of my life, what would be the possible results?
6 Part 2 Page 6 of 6 LESSON APPLY To evaluate student comprehension of concepts taught during this unit, each student will evaluate lifestyle scenarios (see next page), provide suggestions for meeting the dairy recommendation for teens (three to four servings per day) and offer realistic strategies for HOW to follow suggestions given. The answer should include the following: What nutrients are missing (why) Suggested improvements to the diet (solution) How (strategies)
7 Health Basics Start with EVALUATIONS UNIT TEST Name: Class: SCENARIOS FOR PART 2 For the following scenarios, create a suggested food selection and eating strategy. Your complete answer will include what (specific food, amounts), when (time meal and/or snack) and how (action plan). 1. REFUEL SCENARIO James is a long-distance runner, striving to run between three and five miles every day. Every other day, he includes one hour of strength training. His typical diet includes the following: Breakfast: granola bar and coffee Mid-morning snack: smoothie Lunch: hamburger, fries and coke Afternoon snack: apple and candy bar Dinner: 2 beef and bean burritos, milk What strategies and suggestions do you have for James to improve his current diet? 2. HEALTHY BONES SCENARIO: Lauren is a typical high school student. Before her first class begins at 7:35 a.m., she has marching band practice at 6:45. Because band practice starts early, she usually grabs whatever is available at home, and eats it on her way to school. She has a 45-minute time slot in the middle of the day to grab school lunch and hang out with friends. Lauren s school day ends at 3:10. Lauren works Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and Saturdays. What strategies and suggestions would you offer to assure Lauren is following MyPlate recommendations? Your answer should include food recommendations plus suggested strategies for including these foods in her daily routine.

REFUEL SCENARIO ANSWERS SHOULD/COULD INCLUDE: Adding one additional milk serving (cheeseburger or milk with the granola bar or cheese with the apple) Chocolate milk could be included as a snack after his run and/or strength training Increase whole grains, fruits and vegetables to meet the recommendations Strategies might include: - Include milk or water with meals - Eliminate soft drinks when eating out - Add a vegetable to snacks, lunch or dinner - Plan and pack snacks and lunches; prepare the night before, or allow five extra minutes in the morning - Add a fruit, whole grain or dairy to breakfast - Order chocolate milk at fast food restaurants - Ask parent to have chocolate milk available at home - To include more fruits, vegetables and/or chocolate milk, eat lunch at school 2. HEALTHY BONES SCENARIO ANSWERS SHOULD INCLUDE: Strategy for a planned breakfast answer should include what, when and how Additional strategies throughout the day, plus weekend strategies Every day, food suggestions should include: - 2 servings of fruit (school lunch offers one every day) - 3 servings of vegetables (school lunch usually offers two, or one plus a salad bar) servings of dairy - At least ½ of the grains suggested should be whole grains - 2 servings of protein
