Swallowing Your Pills (2 slides)
When you can t get a good medicine down 40% of Americans have problems swallowing pills 14% of people delay their medications 8% will skip a dose 4% just stop taking the medication all together
If you find it a tough pill to swallow: Pharmacists did a study and found 2 methods that helped: Pop bottle method helped 63% of participants: place the pill on your tongue and close your lips around the opening of a water bottle. Take a drink, sucking out the water and then swallowing the water and pill. The water bottle should squeeze in on itself while you do it. Head tilt helped 90% of people: put the pill on your tongue and take a medium sip of water. Don t swallow right away! Bend your head forward, tilting your chin toward your chest and then swallow the pill and water with your head bent forward (works best with capsules which float towards the back of the mouth ). OR see if you can get the medication in a liquid form Consider crushing tablets or opening capsules and mixing with food Tablets can sometimes be split with a pill splitter into smaller pieces
Quick News Headline: Olives for the Heart (2 slides)
Olive LEAF is good for your heart Olive leaf contains a compound (oleuropein) that neutralizes free radicals, reduces inflammation, and prevents plaque buildup in the arteries In a recent study, researchers in Turkey compared a statin drug (atorvastatin) with olive leaf extract in animals fed a high cholesterol diet On the diet, the animals atherogenic index (the ratio of triglycerides to HDL) increased from 0.68 to 4.86 Olive leaf reduced the atherogenic index better than the statin drug 2.10 for the olive leaf group compared to 2.6 for the atorvastatin group Olive leaf has also been shown to reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure as effectively as prescription drugs Olive leaf also reduced inflammatory triglyceride levels while the prescription medication did not
Olive OIL is good for your heart New study looked at the effects of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) versus a corn/soybean (C/SB) oil combination in overweight or obese adults Participants ate a standardized diet plus either EVOO (high monounsatured fats) or the C/SB oil (high in polyunsaturated fats) for 3 months At study end EVOO group saw a 5% decrease in blood pressure; C/SB was unchanged EVOO saw an increase in HDL levels; C/SB saw a decrease EVOO was in improvement in immune cell production; no change in the C/SB oil group Conclusion: overweight or obese adults can reduce their risk of heart disease and increase their immune system response by adding EVOO to their diets
Gram per Gram, You Can t Beat Eggs (2 slides)
Egg prices at an all-time high Egg prices this September were up 50% over the same time last year (average price, $2.97) Prices have been rising steadily for several months due to a shortage of hens associated with an outbreak of bird flu Prices are expected to return to a lower level soon HOWEVER even at $2.97 a dozen, that is still just under 25 CENTS per egg!
Eggs The Perfect Food Eggs are one of the most nutritious foods on the planet Eggs DO NOT increase cholesterol levels In 70% of people, egg consumption had NO effect on cholesterol, in 30% of people there was a very small increase in total cholesterol. In one study, two eggs daily for 6 weeks increased HDL cholesterol by 10%! More importantly, egg consumption has been shown to change dangerous small, dense LDL cholesterol particles to the large, fluffy and not dangerous form In one study of 30 overweight women, eating eggs instead of bagels for breakfast increased feelings of fullness and made them automatically eat fewer calories for the next 36 hours In another study, replacing a bagel breakfast with an egg breakfast caused significant weight loss over a period of 8 weeks An egg contains a variety of vitamins and minerals, plus 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of healthy fats, and lutein, choline and zeaxanthin
