1 Lesson 10 Berry Tales Recommended Book Berry Tales by Haylee Staruk Book Summary: Three traditional fairy tales have been modified to incorporate healthy nutrition messages. Goldilocks contracts a foodborne illness after eating the Bear Family s breakfast which was left on the counter for too long. Little Red Riding Hood s healthy habits help her move faster than the unhealthy Wolf. And only the healthiest of the Three Little Pigs has enough energy to build a sturdy home. Lesson Objectives Children will: 1. Identify healthy messages and themes throughout each of the stories. 2. Discuss ways to incorporate healthy foods and habits in their day. 3. Work together to rewrite another fairy tale with a healthy message. Berry Tales Little Red Riding Hood The Three Little Pigs Goldilocks Stories adapted for FSNE by: Haylee Staruk & The 3 Bears Activity Summary Students will work together to recreate a fairy tale to incorporate a healthy message. See reverse for materials, prep-work, and Write Your Own Berry Tales directions. Lesson Format 1. Ask children to share examples of fairy tales. Review MyPlate concepts and discuss examples of healthy foods in all food groups on MyPlate. 2. Read the Berry Tales aloud to children. Use the Berry Tales Character images provided in the Materials Appendix for children or adults to act out the stories. 3. While reading the stories, stop when appropriate or wait until reading is finished to ask the following questions: a. During Goldilocks and the Three Bears : i. What are the differences between this Berry Tale and the original version? ii. What are some ideas about how you can help your family keep your food safe? Discuss proper food safety techniques including washing your hands, storing leftovers in the refrigerator, and cleaning up after we finish eating. b. During Little Red Riding Hood : i. What are the differences between this Berry Tale and the original version? ii. What are some reasons you want your body to be healthy and strong? iii. What are some of your favorite foods that give you energy? iv. How does your body feel when you eat healthy foods and are physically active? 61

2 Lesson 10 Berry Tales c. During Three Little Pigs : i. What are the differences between this Berry Tale and the original version? ii. What are a few of the healthy tips that made the third little pig brother stronger than his brothers? 1. Highlight the following messages: a. Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. b. Make at least half your grains whole grains. c. Choose low fat or fat free dairy products. d. Avoid large portions. Enjoy your food, but eat less. iii. What are some of your favorite activities that help you stay physically active like the healthiest little pig? 4. Recreate your own Berry Tale following the directions on the next page. 3 Lesson 10 Berry Tales Supplies Paper Various art supplies to design new character images Write Your Own Berry Tale The following tales need to be finished in a new way with a healthy twist! Directions 1. Choose one of the tales below and review the original story. 2. Rewrite the original story to include healthy eating and physical activity messages. 3. Draw props for each character. 4. Perform the story for the class! Hansel and Gretel Hansel and Gretel sprinkle 100% whole-wheat bread crumbs through the forest as a trail, but they get lost when the crumbs are eaten. Soon they come upon a gingerbread house made of cakes, candies, and cookies. Surprised by the lack of healthy options, Hansel and Gretel set out to teach the witch a lesson about enjoying a variety of healthy foods by.. Jack and the Beanstalk Jack, a busy gardener, is well-known for growing beanstalks that reach to the sky. Before he climbs upward on his beanstalk, he offers some advice to his friends on the importance of eating vegetables, not just growing them. He says. Rapunzel Rapunzel is being held prisoner in a tower by a witch who only feeds her candy, doughnuts and soda. As a result, Rapunzel s body and hair become very brittle and weak. Hikers in the forest stumble upon the tower and begin teaching Rapunzel about getting strong and healthy so she can escape the tower. They say 63

Foods to Increase Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. Make at least half your grains whole grains. Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk. Drink water instead of sugary drinks. Goldilocks & The 3 Bears Tips for Making Healthy Food More Fun for Children Delicious Dippers. Kids love to dip their foods. Serve raw vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and carrots with low-fat ranch dressing. Fruit chunks go great with lowfat yogurt. Put Kids in Charge. Ask your child to name new veggie or fruit creations. Let them arrange raw veggies or fruits into a fun shape or design. Frosty Fruits. Frozen treats are popular especially in the Summer months. Put fresh fruit in the freezer for a tasty treat. Grapes, melon chunks, and bananas all taste great frozen! Take Action! How many of the following tips can you and your family check off this week?
