THE HECTOR EATING OUT QUESTIONNAIRE: A DATA COLLECTION TOOL TO ASSESS OUT OF HOME DIETARY INTAKES Androniki Naska 1, Philippos Orfanos 1 and Antonia Trichopoulou 1,2 on behalf of the HECTOR Consortium ( 1 Department of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens 2 Hellenic Health Foundation, Athens, Greece
How is eating out defined? All food items prepared at out of home locations, irrespective of place of consumption; or alternatively, All food items consumed at out of home locations, irrespective of place of preparation. Some ambiguous areas Eating at work, for example, which can include: eating at the work canteen eating or drinking something sourced from the household supplies The classification of 14% of the daily energy intake depends on how eating out is defined (Am J Clin Nutr 2009;90(6): ).
Eating Out: Habits, Determinants, and Recommendations for Consumers and the European Catering Sector the HECTOR project Collaborative research program funded by the EC 6 th Framework Programme Coordinated by the University of Athens Medical School (project Coordinator: Prof. Antonia Trichopoulou) Participants: 60 participants from 16 European countries, including Consumer Associations, SMEs and catering-related large enterprises.
The HECTOR Eating out data collection Questionnaire (HEOQ) Designed to supplement widely applied tools recording sporadic diet at individual level, such as 24-hour dietary recalls or food diaries Content: (a) Opening paragraph with a definition of eating out (b) usual frequency of eating out (per meal) (c) 4 sections recording information on the most recent eating occasion out of home for breakfast, lunch, dinner or snacking (d) overtime changes Feasibility testing: A convenience sample of 133 individuals (mean age 34 yrs). The majority of the respondents were females (65%) and of higher education (88%). The HEOQ can be interviewer- or self-administered (definition of snacking important) Available at:
The pilot of the Greek Health Examination Survey (HES): General information Undertaken by the Hellenic Health Foundation and coordinated by the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) in Helsinki, Finland Period of data collection: November 2010 July 2011 Sample: 147 participants (42% males and 58% females; mean age: 45.6 years) Data collection: 2x24-hour dietary recalls Blood pressure measurement Blood drawing Somatometric measurements Questionnaires (personal characteristics and lifestyle choices, short FFQ and the HECTOR eating out questionnaire) Cooperation rate: 54%
Frequency of eating out per meal and gender the Greek EHES pilot Males Females Total N % N % N % Breakfast Never Occasional Frequent Lunch Never Occasional Frequent Dinner Never Occasional Frequent Occasional: 1-3 times/month Frequent: 1-6 times/week or daily
Sources of foods for the most recent eating out occasion (per meal) in the previous month the Greek EHES pilot Breakfast Lunch Dinner N % N % N % Work/school/student canteen Fast food restaurant Take-away/delivery Other restaurant/hotel Café/bar/Coffee shop Street vendor/kiosk Supermarket/shop Sandwich shop/bakery shop Friends/family house Petrol station Vending machines
Lessons learned: Important to leave time to the respondent to read and understand the eating out definition. Well-trained interviewers to provide examples and clarifications. Recommended to be applied as an interviewer-administered questionnaire. In the 24-hour dietary recall, important to collect information on: the place of consumption the source of food and/or beverages consumed In the short FFQ, important to collect information on the frequency of eating out certain food groups.
Acknowledgments: The HECTOR Consortium Colleagues at the University of Athens Medical School Colleagues at the Hellenic Health Foundation Participants of the Greek EHES pilot DG-Research (HECTOR) and DG-SANCO (Greek EHES) of the European Commission Thank you
