1 BODY IMAGE What do we mean by the term body image? Where do our ideas come from about how we should look? (ex. List sources you look at, people around you that influence you) A is a measurement intended to serve as an example of what is acceptable. Many people measure themselves against these ideals, sometimes without even knowing they are doing so. It is impossible and unrealistic to achieve such an image because: Yet people often want to look like them and get or possibly develop other health issues like an eating disorder if they don t. What do we mean by the term body image? how one sees and feels about oneself Where do our ideas come from about how we should look? (ex. Many people measure themselves against these ideals, sometimes without even knowing they are doing so. It is impossible and unrealistic to achieve such an image because: most images have been digitally altered (airbrushed) to remove wrinkles and flaws, flatten stomachs, enlarge muscles, whiten teeth those on tv or in movies spend hours in make up studios being transformed person is "manufactured", not real Yet people often want to look like them and get depressed or possibly develop other health issues like an eating disorder if they don t.

2 Answer quiz p40. List the numbers of statements you agree with. *If you agreed with most of those statements, you may be trying too hard to fit into an unrealistic body type. Try to think less about your body and more about the other aspects of being "you". Note: how you phrase the ideas above tells whether it should go under the DO or AVOID column minimize diet talk and weight talk discourage friends from engaging in dieting and weight loss fads refrain from making negative comments or joking about our own or other peoples' bodies ask others to do join you as you get some exercise or take part on a team encourage healthy lifestyles realize there is no perfect body; beautiful bodies come in all shapes and sizes compliment one another; remind each other of your strengths (ex. attitudes, actions, efforts, ideas, talents rather than looks) Answer quiz p40. List the numbers of statements you agree with. *If you agreed with most of those statements, you may be trying too hard to fit into an unrealistic body type. Try to think less about your body and more about the other aspects of being "you".

3 Developing a Positive Body Image List some qualities you admire in others. Now pretend that you are in an interview for a job. "Tell us about yourself" are often the first words you will hear from the interviewer. List at least 5 characteristics that you like about yourself or that you have been told by others that you could share with the interviewer. Wishing something about our body was different is natural. However, if you feel good about yourself your worries about your looks will diminish. So, stay positive and have fun keeping your body feeling healthy! As you've already learned, this means: 1) making healthy choices, like not 2) eating properly variety of foods from all food groups, on a regular schedule, in moderation 3) exercise regularly to burn off the you consume and feel good about yourself Body Image "Fixes" that Don't Work People with a poor body image often turn to quick fixes, hoping to change how they look and feel. List some of these fixes below. What should be done instead to be healthy? = skipping meals, following weird food choices or combinations to become thinner; these don't work because when you do decide to eat regular meals or larger amounts, your body will store extra in case you decide to it again through eating less or strange combinations; instead, eat sensibly and exercise in moderation to balance and burn the calories = eating too much, often of foods that make you feel good when you are feeling down; if habitual, this is often a sign that you are unhappy deep inside and may need some help dealing with other things that are upsetting you or causing you stress; such foods often do not provide the nutrition your body needs and the excess will be stored inside = exercising obsessively; when the aim of exercise is to "feel the burn" or quickly change the shape of your body, it is unlikely to improve your health or body image; in fact it may lead to or long term health difficulties = things often advertized on TV or in magazines that promise dramatic results with little effort; industry exploits the we have about our bodies, promising instant results with no effort but for a lot of $ = lashing out at other people as a result of our insecurities because we feel that somehow by making someone else look insignificant, we will look more impressive; we feel more powerful and better about ourselves, but not for very long and not in a healthy way = punishing ourselves rather than others; it may involve saying negative comments about ourselves, putting ourselves down, or even physically harming ourselves

List some things you can to feel better about your body. try enjoying food experiment with new, exotic, nutrient rich foods control comfort eating and cut back on foods with little nutritional value get active and do physical activities that are fun and leave you feeling happy! exercise with friends and share some laughs! deal with stress talk to someone about things that are bothering you, learn ways to cope when times get stressful help each other recognize your strengths and beauty compliment! support! celebrate each others' strengths and the things you like about yourself recognize that others like you for who you are, not because of how you look realize that your body will undergo changes during adolescence be okay with it! help others doing good things for others makes you feel good inside protect yourself from media images be aware of their intentions if you are feeling down, talk to someone you trust ex parent, friend, counsellor
