1 New Meal Patterns Checotah Nutrition Program

2 The Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act takes several steps forward to ensure that lowincome children can participate in child nutrition program and receive the meals they need. Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act

3 MENU PLANNING APPROACH CHANGES NSLP operators must use FBMP beginning with school year

4 Fruits Vegetables Grains Meat/Meat Alternate Milk Lunch Meal Components

5 Fruits Grades K - 5 Grades 6 8 Cups per Week Grades Fruits/Vegetables separated into two components. 2. A daily serving at lunch. 3. May select from fresh, frozen without added sugar. Canned in juice or light syrup, or dried. 4. No more than half the offerings may be in the form of juice % juice only. 6. 1/4 cup dried Fruit = ½ cup fruit. Fruits

6 Daily serving that reflects variety over the week. Vegetable weekly requirements Dark Green ( Broccoli, Greens, Spinach) Red/Orange (Carrots. Sweet Potatoes) Bean/Peas (Kidney Beans, Brown Beans) Starchy (Corn, Green Peas, Potatoes) Other (Onions, Green Beans, Cucumbers) Vegetables

7 Grades K Cups per Week Dark Green Red/Orange Beans / Peas Starchy Other Additional Veg Vegetables

8 Grades K Grains Oz per week Must offer the daily serving At least ½ of grain offered must be whole grain. SY all grain offered must be whole grain-rich. Grain Based Desserts Only two grain based desserts allowed at lunch per school week. Cannot be major source of solid fats and added sugars Grains

9 Daily and weekly requirements for lunch. 2 oz. eq. daily for students in grades oz. eq. daily for younger students A variety of meat/meat alternates is encouraged. Tofu and Soy yogurt will be allowable as meat alternate. Meats / Meat Alternates

14 1 cup daily fruit requirement Vegetables may be substituted for fruit Starchy vegetables may be served if two cups of vegetables from dark green, red/orange, legumes, and/or other subgroup have also been offered. VEGETABLES IN SBP

16 Offer the daily and weekly serving ranges of grains at breakfast Schools may substitute meal/meat alternate for grains once daily grains minimum is met. GRAINS
