Power of Protein After Surgery
What is Protein? Protein is: An essential nutrient. Used to build things in our bodies such as muscle. Made up of 20 amino acids, or building blocks. 9 of the 20 amino acids are called essential because our bodies cannot make them, we have to consume them.
Protein s Role in Good Health Protein is a component of: 1. Muscles 2. Blood 3. Internal Organs 4. Skin 5. Hair 6. Nails 7. Bones
Protein s Role in Weight Loss Promotes the feeling of fullness which is helpful when trying to eat less. Preserves muscle mass which burns more calories
Importance of Muscle: Maintain Your Muscle! As we age, we lose muscle. What does muscle get replaced with? FAT!! Each pound of muscle consumes about 6 10 calories per day. Each pound of fat consumes about 2 4 calories per day. Note: Muscle burns 2 3 times more calories than fat!
What Foods Contain Protein? Animal Sources of Protein Meat: beef, pork, lamb, venison & other game meat Poultry: chicken, turkey Fish Eggs Dairy Foods: yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, milk
What Foods Contain Protein? Plant Sources of Protein Beans & Lentils (Legumes) Nuts & Nut Butters Seeds Grains Soy foods: tofu, soy milk, soy cheese. Vegetables
Protein Content of Foods Examples of Protein Content of Foods: *grams = (g) 8 oz. of milk = 8 (g) 6 oz. container light yogurt = 5 6 (g) 5.3 oz. container light Greek yogurt = (g) 1 oz. of cheese = 7 (g) ¼ cup cottage cheese = 7 (g) 3 oz. lean beef, pork, poultry = (g) 3 oz. light tuna canned packed in water = 16.5 (g) 3.5 oz. salmon = 24 (g) 1 large egg = 6 (g) ½ cup canned kidney beans = 6.4 (g) 1 cup quinoa = 8 (g) 1 cup cooked broccoli = 5.7 (g) Source: USDA Nutrient Database Amount of protein per individual item will vary based on specific type or brand.
Post-Bariatric Surgery Protein Needs Typical Daily Protein Goals: Women: grams per day Men: grams per day NOTE: Your individual protein goal will be calculated prior to surgery.
Post Bariatric Surgery Diet Phases After Surgery, a series of modified textured diets will be followed which includes: Clear Liquid diet Full Liquid Diet Pureed/Mashed Foods Diet Soft Diet Regular Diet
Meeting Protein Needs Post-Bariatric Surgery Protein is the focus after bariatric surgery: Total food volume immediately after bariatric surgery: Limited food volume related to the smaller stomach/pouch size. Protein will stay in the pouch/ stomach longer to help maintain satiety. To help maintain muscle mass during rapid weight loss. The goal after surgery is to maintain muscle mass. Approximately ½ cup of 4 ozs. of food. NOTE: One who has had either gastric bypass or the sleeve gastrectomy will go home on the full liquid diet. A sample full liquid diet meal/snack is as follows: 4 oz. blended soup or 4 oz. protein shake Food volume will increase over time. It is important to always listen to your new stomach/pouch to know when to stop eating.
Meeting Protein Needs Post-Bariatric Surgery Ways to boost protein intake: Supplement your diet with protein drinks & powders Premier Protein shakes bipro protein powders
Protein Supplement Guidelines: Protein Supplement Guidelines per serving: grams protein 5 grams or less of sugar Check ingredient list for sources of protein Sources of complete proteins: Egg Soy: (Vegetable Source of Protein) Milk: Milk Protein or Whey Protein Post Surgery Unjury is one example of quality protein supplements recommended post-surgery *Milk based protein will contain lactose. Milk protein isolate or whey protein isolate is usually tolerated by patients who are lactose intolerant. Visit: for more information.
Protein Supplement Guidelines: Post Surgery Review the Nutrition Facts Label for Unjury Protein Powder: Check the Serving Size: 1 scoop Grams of protein per scoop: 21 grams (Meets goal of grams per serving) Grams of sugar per scoop: 3 grams (Meets goal of 5 grams or less per serving)
Protein Supplement Guidelines A Review of the Nutrition Facts Label: Unjury Protein Powder: Check the ingredient list for protein sources: Whey protein isolate *Milk protein isolate or whey protein isolate are milk based proteins usually tolerated by patients who are lactose intolerant. *Note: Some protein supplements contain more than 1 protein source, so review the entire ingredient list.
Protein Supplement Guidelines: Post Surgery Avoid hydrolyzed collagen based products, as their protein source is lower in essential amino acids.. It is recommended not to purchase a supplement that has collagen listed on the ingredient label.
Post Bariatric Surgery: Protein Focused Diet Needed For A Life time Due to limited space in your new stomach, remember to consume proteinrich foods first in order to avoid filling up on other foods first.
Post Bariatric Surgery: Protein Focused Diet Needed For A Life time Soft Diet Phase: Week 5 through Week 8 The example of above is composed of foods found on the soft diet. Please notice the volume of food on the before surgery plate and the volume of food on the after surgery plate.
Regular, Lifetime Diet Post-Surgery which is Protein- Focused Including Vegetables, Fruits, & Whole Grains Breakfast: ¾ Cup Kashi Go Lean Cereal = 7 grams protein 6 oz. 1% milk = 6 grams protein 1/3 cup blueberries Total Protein: 13 grams Lunch: Lettuce salad with a variety of vegetables (1 cup) = approximately 2 grams protein 2 ½ oz. grilled chicken = 22 grams protein 2 Tablespoons Reduced-fat salad dressing 3 whole grain crackers such as Triscuits = 1 grams protein Total Protein: 25 grams protein Snack: Dannon Fit & Light Greek Yogurt = 12 grams protein Total Protein: 12 grams Dinner: 2.5 oz. grilled salmon = 16 grams protein ¼ cup brown rice = 1 grams protein 1/4 cup cooked broccoli = 1 grams protein with 1 oz. reduced fat cheddar cheese melted on top = 7 grams protein 1 teaspoon margarine Total Protein: 27 grams Snack: 1 string cheese = 8 grams protein ½ orange Total Protein: 8 grams (Source for protein content of foods: USDA Database) Post-Bariatric Surgery: Protein rich foods should be included at each meal and snack. Volume of food does increase over time post-surgery. The estimated volume of food will be provided to you at each diet phase. Always listen to internal signals of satiety to know when to stop eating. The concept of protein focus at meals & snacks will be very important for a lifetime postbariatric surgery.
Meal Planning: Plate Guide Review The healthy regular diet meal plan should include all food groups: Lean meat, poultry, fish, meat substitutes Vegetables Fruits Whole Grains Dairy Foods Follow the Plate Guide for planning your meals and snacks: NOTE: The dietitian will review each diet phase with you individually as you progress from surgery. You will be given sample meal plans for each diet phase to use as a reference in your own meal planning. The regular diet phase will start month 3 after surgery. Revised April 2018
