3 Holy Cross Health: The Region s Leader in Gynecologic Surgery There s a good reason why women throughout the region turn to Holy Cross Health when they find their gynecologic symptoms or conditions require surgery: our specialists perform more gynecologic and gynecologic oncology inpatient surgeries each year in Maryland than any other hospital or health system. Our surgeons are regional leaders in the treatment of medical conditions requiring gynecologic surgery and innovators in minimally invasive techniques. Recognized for Quality Holy Cross Hospital is recognized for clinical quality, designated as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG ) by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) and the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). That same level of expertise also is available at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. This high level of care is part of Holy Cross Health s mission to serve as a compassionate and transforming healing presence. 4 Expertise in Minimally Invasive Procedures 4 Bringing the Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery to You Patients who once would have required open surgery to treat a variety of gynecologic conditions can now be treated with minimally invasive surgical techniques that support smaller incisions, faster recovery times, shorter hospital stays, and often less risk and fewer complications. Holy Cross is nationally recognized for the development and use of such innovative surgical methods. Specialized Care Holy Cross Health specialists provide the expertise you need when it comes to gynecologic surgical care. This includes: General gynecologic surgery, from the common to the complex Gynecologic oncology, for the diagnosis and treatment of women with pre-cancerous or cancerous problems of the reproductive system Urogynecology, for everything from diagnostic evaluation to minimally invasive reconstructive surgery to support the pelvic health of women with problems of the vagina, uterus, bladder, bowel and rectum (pelvic floor). The hallmark of our program is the team s commitment and expertise in adopting the latest innovations in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, including robotic surgery. Holy Cross Hospital was the first in Montgomery County to offer robotic surgery in 2008, and our commitment continues with the technology and expertise also accessible at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. In addition to expert gynecologic surgeons, Holy Cross Health s team of anesthesiologists, physician assistants, nurses, case managers (nurses and social workers), and support staff works to provide comprehensive care before, during and after surgery. Gynecologic surgery is a very personal experience and can be an emotional time for you, which is why we are not only dedicated to positive surgical outcomes, but to your overall well-being and comfort. Cancer Expertise Holy Cross Health specialists are pioneering some of the most promising treatment advances in gynecologic surgery techniques that are quickly translated into care for our patients. We offer several gynecologic oncology clinical trials that test new treatments or early detection methods for a variety of conditions. In addition to diagnostic testing and surgery, patients with gynecologic cancer have access to a variety of treatments including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, vaccine therapy and pain management, along with oncology nurse navigator and family support services.

5 Gynecologic Conditions We Treat and Our Approach Holy Cross Health gynecologic surgeons perform the majority of procedures using a minimally invasive approach including laparoscopic or robotic techniques. However, in the event this approach is not optimal, our team also has deep experience in vaginal and open surgery techniques. Joy s Gynecologic Surgery Story The benefits to minimally invasive surgery include: Small incisions Less blood loss Less pain Less scarring Fewer complications A shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery Utilizing the most advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques, Holy Cross Health s gynecologic surgery specialists treat a wide variety of symptoms and conditions: Gynecologic cancers including cervical, uterine, endometrial and ovarian cancer as well as cancers of the vagina and vulva Pelvic floor disorders, or pelvic floor dysfunction, a weakening or injury to the muscles, ligaments, connective tissue and nerves that help support the organs in the pelvis. Our multi-specialty team of urogynecologists, gynecologists, urologists and colorectal surgeons treats pelvic floor disorders including: Vaginal, rectal and pelvic organ prolapse Urinary and fecal incontinence Overactive bladder and nocturia with or without urinary incontinence Bowel dysfunction Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) Obstructed defecation Painful bladder syndrome Ovarian cysts, especially those that grow large or cause pain and may require surgical treatment and removal Uterine fibroids, benign (non-cancerous) tumors that form in or on the uterus. Fibroids can be surgically treated through minimally invasive hysterectomy and laparoscopy-assisted myomectomy, a surgery that removes fibroids through a small, five-millimeter incision. Endometriosis, one of the most common reasons for pelvic pain in women. Our gynecologic surgeons can treat endometriosis utilizing a number of minimally invasive techniques. Excessive menstrual bleeding that does not respond to treatment with medication can be treated utilizing gynecologic surgical procedures such as dilation and curettage (D&C) or endometrial ablation to remove the lining of the uterus. Extensive pelvic adhesions that form during the normal healing process after damage to tissues in the lining of the abdomen and pelvis. Our gynecologic surgeons perform minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to remove the tissue, which relieves pelvic pain and may help with fertility. With a family history of ovarian cancer, Joy, a Germantown mother and grandmother, turned to the gynecologic surgery experts at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. Using an advanced, minimally invasive technique, Joy s surgeon was able to remove her ovaries by making several small incisions in her abdomen. He threaded a video camera and surgical instruments through those ports, with real-time images on the video screen guiding his hands. After the procedure, while I was still in recovery, my surgeon came by and the minute I saw his big smile I knew that all went well, Joy remembers. Just hours after surgery, I was resting at home. To find a gynecologic specialist on our team, call or visit HolyCrossHealth.org. 5

6 Preparing for Surgery and Recovery: What to Expect 6 Things to Do Before Your Surgery Schedule any necessary pre-operative appointments once your surgery is arranged. Pre-register for your surgery by visiting HolyCrossHealth.org/prereg or calling Follow any pre-operative instructions given by your physician s office or by the Holy Cross Health pre-surgical screening nurse who will call you in advance of surgery. Prepare a list of your medications to bring to the hospital on the day of your surgery. Tools and additional instructions for preparing for your surgery are available at HolyCrossHealth.org. The Day of Surgery Pre-operative patient and family education Prior to your surgery, your pre-operative nurse will go through a checklist to ensure your safety during your procedure, and you ll be provided with information about the process leading up to your surgery. You ll have the chance to meet your surgical team, including your anesthesiologist. Surgery A team member will bring you into the operating suite for your procedure, and the surgical team will keep your family informed and answer any questions. Recovery Following your surgical procedure, you will be transferred to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) where nurses will provide support and comfort as you recover from anesthesia. A family member or loved one can then join you before you are transferred to your private patient room or return home. Discharge planning Following your surgery, our team will work with you to ensure a safe and seamless transition from hospital to home, including detailed care instructions from your surgeon. If you need a little extra help at home or longer-term inpatient care for your recovery, our team will help you find services for your individual needs. Recover in a Private Room Many gynecologic surgery patients can return home from the hospital on the very same day as their procedure. For patients who require inpatient care, Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital provide you with the comforts of a private room throughout your stay. Amenities such as room-service-style meal delivery, free wireless Internet access, cable television and a private bathroom add to your comfort and peace of mind. And, because patients benefit greatly from visitors, your designated support person is welcome to remain by your side and stay overnight on the sleeper sofa. For up-to-date visiting guidelines, visit HolyCrossHealth.org.

Referred to a urogynecologist at Holy Cross Hospital, Terri was soon diagnosed as having prolapse of the bladder, uterus and rectum. To correct Terri s problem, her urogynecologic surgeon performed a hysterectomy and a reconstructive procedure using the da Vinci Surgical System. With only tiny incisions, Terri spent just one night in the hospital after her surgery. The next morning, I was up and walking, she recalls. I was shocked at being home the day after surgery and feeling as well as I did. Today, I am completely back to normal. I have no urinary incontinence or prolapse problems. My surgeon is a miracle worker! Skilled nursing For patients who may benefit from a stay in a rehabilitation facility, Sanctuary at Holy Cross, a Trinity Senior Living Community affiliated with Holy Cross Health located in Burtonsville, Md., offers nursing and rehabilitation services.
