Best practice of PSF-ONGD in using Information Communication Technology to combat Violence Against Women Psicólogos Sin Fronteras ONGD (PSF-ONGD) )

PSF-ONGD work Promoting Psychosocial wellbeing among the Indigenous Women of Cambodia Province: Ratanakiri Districts: Borkeo, Oyadav and Andoung Meas Ethnic groups: Jarai, Tampoun, Ponong, Kachok Target: 105 villages

PSF-ONGD main activities Created a body of Gender Promoters Created a Psychosocial Assistance Mobile Unit Facilitated capacity building to governmental staff on Gender and Women s Mental Health )

AECID PSF-ONGD Universidad de Oviedo CAMBODIA Ministry of Health Ministry of Women Affairs Royal University of Phnom Penh

There are many types of Violence Against Women: sexual, physical, psychological and socioeconomic.

The Target Group The study was carried out in the Eastern part of the Province of Ratanakiri: Andoung Meas, Borkeo and Oyadav Districts. Population of reference: 8,500 women and men on reproductive e age (15-49 years) living in 106 villages.

The Sample Sample: 625 questionnaires distributed at random in 26 villages and covering proportionally the ethnic groups Jarai, Tampoun, Kachok, and Ponong.

The Survey The survey focused on Indigenous Women issues. Two specific questionnaires were made, one for Men and one for Women.

The Questionnaire The questionnaire composed of 56 questions and followed the Demographic and Health Survey Project (DHS), covering issues including: Reproductive Health Maternal Health Infant Mortality Domestic Violence.

Women Men Statistical significance Justify VAW 25% 6% P Suffer/commit VAW 15% 4% P The perpetrator is drunk 58% 21% P Women ask for help 33% 21% No signif

Results about Justification of VAW Q: Sometimes a husband is annoyed or angered by things done by his wife. In your opinion, is a husband justified to hiting or beating his wife? The proportion of Indigenous Women that justify VAW is lower than the rest of the Country (55%, CDHS, 2005). The justification of VAW is higher among women than among men.

Results about Suffering/Commiting VAW Q:Has your husband ever beat you/have you ever beaten your wife? Indigenous Women manifest similar rates of VAW by the husband than in the rest of the Country (16% CDHS, 2000; 13% CDHS, 2005) 15% of the Women claim to suffer VAW Only 4% of Men admit to commiting VAW. The reason for the low percentage could be that they recognise that it is not socially accepted.

Results about Alcohol Q:Were him/you drunk when happened? The fact that the Male perpetrator of VAW is drunk is claimed by both sexs, although much more by Women than by Men. This fact supports the activity 1.5 of Strategy 1 of the National Action Plan to Prevent Violence on Women (NAPVW), launching campaigns on consumption of alcohol.

Results about Privacy Q:Have you/your wife ever tried to get help? When VAW happens only one out of four women seek help. Both, men and women agree to keep the case private This fact highlights the importance of the activity 1.4 of the Strategy 1 of the National Action Plan to Prevent Violence on Women (NAPVW), launching campaigns around Domestic violence being a public problem and not an individual matter

Educating the whole Community (both Men and Women; youth and adults) is the key )

PSF-ONGD activities Link with NAPVW Strategy 1: Making VAW a public and social problem instead of a private and family one - Create Community Group Discussions at village level involving both Men and Women, conducted by 2 psychologists, Gender Promoters and indigenous language translators - VAW - Alcohol consumption )

The Psychosocial Assistance Mobile Unit conducting a session in a village )

PSF-ONGD activities Link with NAPVW Strategy 1: Using flipcharts for different target groups - Developed flipcharts on different topics for the Gender Promoters to teach at the village

A flipchart tackling Domestic Violence and Alcohol consumption )

Empowering Women is one way to reduce Violence Against Women

PSF-ONGD activities Link with NAPVW Strategy 3: Develop referral system at grassroots level - Created a role for Gender Promoters to extend the MoWA systems to the villages in order to monitor the Psychosocial wellbeing of women and refer them to the Commune Women and Children Focal Point if necessary )

222 women have been trained in the role of Gender Promoters )

PSF-ONGD activities Link with NAPVW Strategy 4: Strengthen the Capacity of Competent Officials and relevant services providers - Facilitated the attendance at workshops and trainings which related to Gender and/or Women s Mental Health issues to staff from the Provincial Health Department, Referral Hospital and Provincial Department of Women Affairs )

PSF-ONGD using ICT PSF-ONGD sends information about Indigenous Women situation to the web side of OI(our partner) to reach more people and to sensitise them

Thanks )
