3 Introduction The kingdom of Swaziland is located in Southern Africa and is land locked with the Republic of South Africa and Mozambique forming the borders. In 2000, the Kingdom of Swaziland signed the United Nations Millennium Declaration and in so doing, embraced the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Swaziland is guided by the National Development Strategy (NDS) and the Poverty Reduction Strategy and Action Programme (PRSAP), both of which complement the development ideals of the MDGs. The country has developed three consecutive MDGs reports during the years 2003, 2007 and

5 Specific objectives MDG 1: ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY AND HUNGER Consists of three Target Goals :Target 1A, Target 1B and Target 1C MDG 2: ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION It has one target goals set :Target 2A MDG 3: PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER WOMEN It comprises of one target goal:3a MDG 4: REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY (It includes one targets: Target 4A) 5

8 Results MDG 1: ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY AND HUNGER Target 1.A: Have, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people whose income is less than one dollar a day (acceleration required ) Target 1.B: Achieve full and production employment and decent work for all, including women and young people (acceleration required) Target 1.C: Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people who suffer from hunger (on truck) 8

15 Continued MDG 7: ENSURE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY Target 7.A: Integrate the principle of sustainable development in to country policies and programmes and reverse the loss of environmental resources (on truck) Target 7.B:Reduce biodiversity loss, achieving, by 2010, a significant reduction in the rate of loss (acceleration required) Target 7.C: Halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and sanitation (on truck) 15

17 Conclusion Swaziland in signing the Millennium Declaration encompassed the views of the Millennium Development Goals as practical, systematic and time-bound strategy for fighting poverty. The country has made significant in highway and impression into the fight against poverty by dropping poverty from its highest level of 69 percent in 2001to 63 percent in Swaziland to-date has produced four reports in 2003, 2007, 2010 and Challenges Internal :excessive pressure on limited domestic resources on the one hand External: global financial and economic meltdown on the other. 17
