1 MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOAL #3 scic international comic saskatchewan council for cooperation Promote gender equality and empower women series IN THIS ISSUE - Women on the move
2 Millennium Development Goal # 3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women What is Gender Equality and why is it necessary? Gender equality means making sure that men and women are equal. It means making sure that girls and boys are given the same opportunities in life, starting with receiving an education. The UN recognizes that making men and women equal is central to making the world a better place for everyone. Although there has been work towards gender equality over the years, women of the world continue to be more affected than men by the burden of poverty. They also have lesser access to education, and they are victims of widespread and persistent discrimination and violence. Women also face higher rates of HIV/AIDS and other health problems and in many countries they continue to struggle with health problems related to childbirth. The achievement of women s empowerment and gender equality is essential for eliminating extreme poverty and reaching all of the other Millennium Development Goals. Quick education facts 1.2 billion people in the world live on less than a dollar a day. 70% of those people are women. Twice as many women suffer from malnutrition as men. Women and girls in poor countries walk on average six kilometers a day, carrying 20 litres of water (that s like 10 milk cartons!) Girls are twice as likely to die from malnutrition and preventable childhood diseases as boys. The average 16-year-old girl in Africa has received less than three years of schooling. One in three women in the world has been a victim of violence. Studies show that when women are allowed to make household decisions, their children are more likely to go to school and get enough food to eat. Despite all of the bad news, women s power is on the rise! Since 1990, the percentage of women in parliament worldwide has increased from 12% to 17%. 7 Putting the U in Equality 5 ways you can contribute to gender equality and women s empowerment: 1. support communities, teachers, governments and local organizations to create child and girlfriendly schools that are safe and without discrimination. 2. Avoid using gender stereotypes and sexist jokes and encourage others to do the same. 3. start an awareness campaign about a gender issue that is important to you. 4. Think about child care and other barriers to women s participation when you are organizing events in your community. 5. Get involved with one of your local organizations that promote gender equality and empowerment of women Some Canadian Organizations that work towards gender equality and women s empowerment to join/volunteer with: Oxfam Canada: Oxfam Canada is an international development organization that works to address the root causes of poverty and injustice. Campus Women s Centres: There are women s centres at the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina and most other campuses across Canada! These centres have libraries, event listings, and other opportunities. They are a great place to learn more and get involved at any age! At the U of R contact: wc@ursu.uregina.ca At the U of S contact: womens.centre@ussu.ca There are LOTS of other great organizations doing great work on gender issues so be sure to look around for a group that suits you.
