2 National Programs & Resources Focused on Community Health Workers Presentation Goal To raise awareness of two Federal training program models for Community Health Workers: 1) Promoting Healthy Choices & Community Changes: An E-Learning Program for Promotores de Salud (HHS Office of Minority Health) 2) Women s Health Leadership Institute (HHS Office on Women s Health) 2

4 HHS Office of Minority Health Promoting Healthy Choices & Community Changes Launched: June 23, 2015 Goals: 1) Build the capacity of promotores de salud to promote individual and community-level changes towards good health. 2) Advance health equity. 3) Reduce health disparities. Type: E-learning exclusively Cost: Free Focus: Promotores de Salud with a wide range of computer and literacy skills Language: Available in English and Spanish 4
5 Promoting Healthy Choices & Community Changes E-Learning Program for Promotores de Salud Background Coordinated by the HHS Office of Minority Health, this e-learning training is a product of the HHS Promotores de Salud Initiative whose goals are to: 1) Recognize the important contributions of promotores in reaching vulnerable, low-income and underserved members of Latino/Hispanic populations. 2) Promote the increased engagement of promotores in health education and prevention efforts and access to health insurance programs. 3) National Program Advisory Committee (N-PAC). Designed for: Any promotor de salud regardless of years of experience or the type of outreach in which they are currently engaged, e.g., nutrition, cancer, diabetes, etc. 5
6 Promoting Healthy Choices & Community Changes Training Curriculum & Skills Curriculum goals: 1) Promote healthy choices at the individual and community levels. 2) Apply basic principles and strategies to motivate behavioral change. 3) Empower individuals to promote changes in their communities. Curriculum content : 4 training units that provide promotors with the basic knowledge to: Tell the difference between a healthy choice and an unhealthy choice; Recognize things that can make it hard to make healthy choices; Learn the best ways to talk with someone about healthy choices; Recommend resources that can help people make healthy choices; Teach people in their community to take action toward health; Make changes in their community; and Empower others to make changes in their community. Promotores receive a Certificate of Completion after finishing each unit. 6
7 HHS Office on Women s Health Women's Health Leadership Institute Launched: 2012; contract completed September 9, 2014 Goals: To train community health workers to take a public health systems approach and 1) Address disparities within the community environment 2) Engage communities in resolving their own problems 3) Increase a community s capacity for health and wellness Type: 2 to 3 day Workshop Cost: Free Focus: Experienced community health workers Language: Available in English and Spanish 7
8 Women s Health Leadership Institute History Background The HHS Office on Women s Health funded a contract with Mariposa Community Health Center in Nogales, AZ to: 1) Design and implement a curriculum for community health workers working on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, and 2) Pilot test it Border Women s Health Leadership Institute (2004 to 2010) Women s Health Leadership Institute Designed for: Experienced community health workers who want to learn how to address disparities from a systems level perspective 8
9 Women s Health Leadership Institute Training Curriculum & Skills Curriculum goals: To fortify certain skill sets for community health workers including leadership, ethics, group problem solving, community assessment/action planning, and community capacity building. Curriculum Content: 5 modules that train CHWs to: 1) Recognize the interrelatedness and complexity of a society where change is desired to take place. 2) Use their reflection, critical analysis and creative thinking skills to contribute to change. 3) Involve and organize groups to build a shared vision through collective action. 4) Engage in an analytical planning process to undertake advocacy tasks that generate action. 5) Implement strategies that identify, build and strengthen personal commitment to social change. Community health workers receive a Certificate of Completion after the participating in the entire workshop. 9
10 Current Status: Women s Health Leadership Institute The WHLI is in the process of being evaluated. The HHS Office on Women s Health and the Office of Minority Health Resource Center have partnered to continue to offer WHLI trainings across the country to community health workers from immigrant and emerging communities. 10
11 National Programs & Resources Focused on Community Health Workers Final thoughts. There is a growing recognition in government of the variety of roles that community health workers can play across the spectrum of health. The federal government is in the early stages of investing in prevention efforts through training community health workers which will result in healthier communities. Thanks to all of you have provided input into the development and implementation of these programs and others like them. 11
