The term global health has become a means to brand the global prestige of an academic institution... fulfills the expectations of students... meet the international interests of faculty...accessing new and large sources of funding for global health MacFarlane et al (2008)
4 What do we mean by global health... Global health is the goal of improving health for all people in all nations by promoting wellness and eliminating avoidable diseases, disabilities, and deaths. It can be attained by combining clinical care at the level of the individual person with populationbased measures to promote health and prevent disease. This ambitious endeavor calls for an understanding of health determinants, practices, and solutions, as well as basic and applied research concerning risk factors, disease, and disability Institute of Medicine s Expert Committee (2008)

25 Identified priorities (1) The present health MDGs (4, 5 and 6) must remain central to the post-2015 agenda accelerating progress where targets have not been achieved setting more ambitious targets for the period to come. greater emphasis on equity between and within countries Sexual and reproductive health and rights must be addressed. comprehensive sexuality education protection from sexual violence and abuse.
