2 My Background On the board of 5 nonprofit organizations and president of 2 Involved in various capacity building projects in a number of countries over the past 26 years Currently working on a capacity building project in Indonesia (collaborating with WHO, Indonesian Ministry of Health CHP) Currently on the Coordinating Committee for the Community Health Engagement Program (CHEP)

3 What is Capacity Building?

4 It is not just the consumption of resources

5 or Simply adding new people

6 It is not achieved by just talking to people

7 ..or just getting them in the same room

8 It is about making connections

9 ..and building relationships

10 Engaging in a collective effort

11 To develop the ability to more effectively achieve goals

12 Creating capacity by design Building relationships is facilitated by an infrastructure designed to nurture connections Building the infrastructure can accelerated development of capacity. Building good infrastructure can facilitate efficient leveraging of resources. CHEP is an example of how this might be accomplished.

14 What is Community Health Engagement Program? It is a component of the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI), funded from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Indiana University in collaboration with Purdue and Notre Dame, has created CHEP to help assist researchers in translating research findings to the Indiana community by engaging the community to participate in research opportunities.

15 Our Mission develop a coalition of interested Indiana community organizations who will provide insight and guidance to developing, conducting and interpreting research in order to better the health of Hoosiers

16 Our Goal to establish a mechanism in which both the community and the researchers work collaboratively to provide valuable resources to all citizens of Indiana regardless of race, ethnicity, SES, location, religious status, and health status.

21 Major Health Care Challenges in Indiana Access to Care Asthma Dental Health Diabetes Immunizations Infant Health Injury and Violence Prevention Lead Poisoning Mental Health Overweight and Obesity Sexually Transmitted Infections (Community assessment report, 2008, United Way of Central Indiana)

22 CHEP will connect community organizations with advanced preventive research efforts such as: The Oral health research institute The Otis R. Bowen Research Center

23 A successful Community-based participatory research (Diabetes Prevention Program) The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a promising practice that should be advanced. A 58% reduction in the development of new cases of diabetes was achieved as a result of the DPP. The DPP was more successful than medication in reducing the development of new cases of diabetes. Exercising

24 Diabetes Prevention Program in the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis has partnered with the IU School of Medicine to adapt the DPP to community-based settings. The program has been simplified to make administration and monitoring easier for participants and community-based agencies. CHEP can advance that even further by partnering with other community - based organizations and attract other interested researchers.
