1 I N T R O D U C T I O N The Global Strategy for Women s and Children s Health, launched in September 2010 by the UN Secretary-General, has contributed to significant progress worldwide to improve women s and children s health. The Every Woman Every Child (EWEC) movement that grew out of the Global Strategy mobilizes actors from all sectors to work towards shared goals for women s, children s and adolescents health and to prioritize these issues on the political agenda. Despite significant progress, there is much more to be done and many countries will fall short of achieving MDGs 4 and 5. There is also a continued challenge in humanitarian settings, where a high number of preventable deaths occur. Every Woman Every Child stakeholders unanimously agreed on the need to update the Global Strategy for Women s, Children s and Adolescents Health to focus attention on the unfinished MDG agenda and contribute to the new Sustainable Development Goals vision and targets. An updated Global Strategy will build on new evidence, including the need to focus on critical population groups such as newborns and adolescents, build the resilience of health systems, improve the quality of health services and equity in their coverage, and work with healthenhancing sectors on issues such as education, women s political and economic participation, and water, sanitation and hygiene. The Government of India in collaboration with the Every Woman Every Child movement is pleased to host a two-day international meeting that will bring together approximately 120 senior representatives especially from governments, civil society, international organizations and the private sector. M E E T I N G O U T P U T S 1. Leadership from countries to promote political and stakeholder engagement in updating and implementing the Global Strategy for Women s, Children s and Adolescents Health. 2. Stakeholder recommendations on the content, process and next steps from different work streams to update the Global Strategy. 3. Roadmap and next steps, including specific stakeholder contributions to finalize and operationalize the Global Strategy.
