Hompes Method Prac00oner Training Level II Lesson Forty Six Depo Provera Injection, Patch, Coil Health for the People Ltd not for reuse without expressed permission Hompes Method is a trading name of Health For The People L< Registered in England & Wales Company # VAT #
Introduc0on This is not a poli, cal or sociological debate. I m not taking moral high ground. It is a discussion on physiological consequences of the pill in women: How the pill works The problems it can solve The problems it can cause
Non-pill hormonal contracep0ves There are four types of contracep,on: Hormonal: The pill The patch The injec,on Barrier: Non-hormonal coil Condoms Intrauterine (inserted inside the uterus) Sterilisa,on
Depo-Provera Injec0on Contracep,ve injec,on for women Depo-Provera is a brand name for medroxyprogesterone (a proges,n) Given as an injec,on once every three months Typically suppresses ovula,on Thickens cervical mucus
Depo-Provera Injec0on Also available in lower dosage This version is called Depo-SubQ Provera 104 Depo-Provera is injected deep into the muscle Depo-SubQ Provera 104 is injected just beneath the skin Benefits, risks and side effects are similar
Why Depo-Provera is used Prevent pregnancy Modulate cycle Don t want to take the pill Want or need to avoid estrogen (there s no estrogen in it) Exis,ng condi, ons: fibroids, anemia, seizures, endometriosis (anything that carries risk from excess estrogen)
Benefits (Mayo Clinic) Doesn't require daily azen,on Eliminates the need to interrupt sex for contracep,on Decreases menstrual cramps and pain Lessens menstrual blood flow, and in some cases stops menstrua,on (not sure this is a benefit!) Decreases the risk of endometrial cancer
Drawbacks Requires an injec,on Prevents ovula,on and creates significant problems for some women as a result Decimates natural progesterone level May block progesterone receptors High proges,n levels carry their own risk!
Drawbacks I ve seen major, life-changing issues from this injec,on it is a toxin to some women and fucks up their ability to get pregnant Like the pill, the issue can be what happens when it s stopped, not while it is being taken No periods for months or years, massive hormone imbalances due to messed up HPG axis, infer, lity, miscarriages, termina, ons
Drawbacks (Mayo Clinic) Your health care provider may discourage use of Depo-Provera if you have Unexplained vaginal bleeding Breast cancer Liver disease Sensi, vity to any components of Depo-Provera Risk factors for osteoporosis A history of depression In addiuon, tell your health care provider if you have diabetes or a history of heart disease or stroke.
Drawbacks (Mayo Clinic) You may have a delay in your return to fer3lity. A[er stopping Depo-Provera, it may be 10 months or more before you begin ovulaung again. If you want to become pregnant in the next one year or so, Depo- Provera might not be the right birth control method for you.
Drawbacks (Mayo Clinic) Other side effects of Depo-Provera may include: Abdominal pain Acne Breast soreness Decreased interest in sex Depression Dizziness Headaches Irregular periods and breakthrough bleeding Nervousness Weakness and fa,gue Weight gain
The Contracep0ve Patch Contains synthe,c estrogen and proges,n Works like the combina,on pill Prevents ovula,on and thickens cervical mucus Two types/brands are available: Xulane (US) Evra (UK and Europe)
The Contracep0ve Patch (Wiki) A woman applies her first patch onto her upper outer arm, bu<ocks, abdomen or thigh on either the first day of her menstrual cycle (day 1) or on the first Sunday following that day, whichever she prefers. The day of applicauon is known from that point as patch change day. Seven days later, when patch change day comes again, the woman removes the patch and applies another to one of the approved locauons on the body. This process is repeated again on the next patch change day. On the following patch change day, the patch is removed and not replaced. The woman waits 7 days without a patch in place, and on the next patch change day she applies a new patch. hzps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/contracep,ve_patch
Benefits (Mayo Clinic) used to prevent pregnancy. It has some advantages over other types of birth control: It eliminates the need to interrupt sex for contracep,on You don't need your partner's coopera,on to use it It doesn't require daily azen,on or having to remember to take a pill every day It provides a steady dose of hormones It's easier to use for women who have trouble swallowing pills It can be removed at any,me, allowing for a quick return to fer, lity
Side effects (Mayo Clinic) Side effects of the birth control patch may include: An increased risk of blood-cloing problems, heart azack, stroke, liver cancer, gallbladder disease and high blood pressure Breakthrough bleeding or spoing Skin irrita,on Breast tenderness or pain Menstrual pain Headaches Nausea or vomi,ng
Side effects (Mayo Clinic) Side effects, con, nued: Abdominal pain Mood swings Weight gain Dizziness Acne Diarrhea Muscle spasms Vaginal infec, ons and discharge Fa,gue Fluid reten,on
Side effects (Mayo Clinic) Research shows that the birth control patch may increase estrogen levels in the body compared to combinauon birth control pills that are taken by mouth. You may have a slightly higher risk of estrogen-related adverse events, such as blood clots, while using the patch than if you took combinauon birth control pills. hzp://
The Contracep0ve Patch (Wiki) In three large clinical trials involving a total of 3,330 women using the Ortho Evra / Evra patch for up to one year, 12% of users disconunued the patch because of adverse events. The most frequent adverse events leading to patch disconunuauon were: nausea and/or vomiung (2.4%), applicauon site reacuon (1.9%), breast discomfort, engorgement or pain (1.9%), headache (1.1%), and emouonal lability (1.0%). [13] hzps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/contracep,ve_patch
The Contracep0ve Patch (Wiki) The most frequent adverse events reported while using the Ortho Evra / Evra patch were: breast discomfort, engorgement or pain (22%), headache (21%), applicauon site reacuon (17%), nausea (17%), upper respiratory tract infecuon (10%), menstrual cramps (10%), and abdominal pain (9%). [13] hzps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/contracep,ve_patch
Contracep0ve implant Flexible plas,c rod about the size of a matchs,ck that is placed under the skin of the upper arm. Releases steady dose of a proges,n (proges,n only)
Contracep0ve implant hzps:// contracep,on/contracep,ve-implant
Types of implant
Contracep0ve implant (Mayo Clinic) Abdominal or back pain An increased risk of noncancerous ovarian cysts Changes in vaginal bleeding pazerns, including absence of menstrua,on Decreased sex drive Dizziness Headaches Mild insulin resistance Mood swings and depression Nausea or upset stomach Poten,al interac,on with other medica, ons Sore breasts Vaginal inflamma,on or dryness Weight gain
They all carry similar risk The pill, injec,on and patch are similar The subtle,es may differ from one to another They stop ovula,on The contain fake hormones (Frankenhormones) They are drugs many don t consider this They are the only drugs taken when there isn t a disorder or disease! Problems can occur during use, or aperwards
The hormone IUD IUD means intrauterine device Commonly known as coils Can be hormone or non-hormone Two hormonal coils have been FDA-approved: Mirena Prevents pregnancy for up to 5 years aper inser,on Skyla Prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years
What is an IUD? T-shaped plas,c frame that releases proges,n Thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching or fer, lizing an egg. Thins the lining of the uterus and par, ally suppresses ovula,on. hzp:// contracep,on-guide/pages/iusintrauterine-system.aspx
Where does the IUD go? hzps://
Mirena coil side effects Side effects associated with Mirena include: Increased risk of STD Headache Acne Breast tenderness Irregular bleeding Absence of periods (amenorrhea), especially aper one year of use Mood changes Weight gain Ovarian cysts Cramping or pelvic pain
Mirena coil lawsuits!
Copper IUD The IUD works by stopping the sperm and egg from surviving in the womb or fallopian tubes. It may also prevent a ferulised egg from implanung in the womb. hzp://
Copper IUD The copper IUD doesn t contain hormones However copper itself is a major problem It releases copper instead of progestogen Copper toxicity can cause significant issues, as you know, and can be assessed using a hair mineral analysis and/or serum copper to plasma zinc rauo
Copper IUD Copper is associated with estrogen (zinc with testosterone) Copper toxicity can cause estrogen dominance Estrogen dominance is a major problem, as you ve seen already
Naviga0ng the controversy You re not allowed to recommend a woman uses or does not use any medical contracep,ve You can educate and recommend they discuss the situa,on with their physician or OBGYN You can then help people rebalance the imbalances that may have been caused by these methods of contracep,on Educate, educate, educate!
Summary Injec, ons are proges,n-only Patches are synthe,c estrogen and proges,n Implants are proges,n-only Hormonal IUDs are proges,n-only Copper IUDs are non-hormonal, but can s,ll massively ship hormone balance Don t play doctor: just educate
Thanks and next up Thanks for watching or listening. Next up, we re going to look at some common condi, ons associated with female hormone imbalances PMS, PMDD and PCOS.
