Dementia is a syndrome due to disease of the brain, usually of a chronic or progressive nature, in which there is disturbance of multiple cortical functions, calculation, learning capacity, language and judgement. 18 Types of Dementia Research Cure Prevention Care
Looking for a Cure: Tau, Tangles & Plaques
What would a cure mean? Delaying the onset of dementia by 5 years would mean 469,000 less people living the disease by ,000 fewer informal carers by 2030 savings of 21.2bn a year by 2050
Drug Development The estimated cost of developing a new drug is 1.15 billion It takes on average 12.5years There are 289 ongoing clinical trials for dementia in the UK There are 4521 for cancer
Cure
Cure The team of German scientists examined how certain proteins which can collect in the brain alter their behaviour with ageing. They believe their discovery could pave the way for new approaches to tackling such ageing seeds. Dr Frank Baumann, of the Hertie Institute For Clinical Brain Research in Tubingen, where the study was carried out, said it was now important for such proteins in the brain to be mapped. If this could be done in both healthy people and those with dementia, it might hold the key to tackling the disease.
A new approach? University of California study combined existing cures - e.g. anti-inflammatory drugs, insulin - with interventions to improve diet, increase exercise, manage stress and improve sleep. Improvement in participants memories Small study, evidence anecdotal
Prevention "Though it's not inevitable, dementia is currently set to be the 21st Century's biggest killer. We all need to be aware of the risks and start making positive lifestyle changes." Dr Doug Brown, Director of Research, Alzheimer's Society
Lifestyle risk factors Mid-life hearing loss - responsible for 9% of the risk Failing to complete secondary education - 8% Smoking - 5% Failing to seek early treatment for depression - 4% Physical inactivity - 3% Social isolation - 2% High blood pressure - 2% Obesity - 1% Type 2 diabetes - 1% Source: Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, intervention and care
But The other 65% of dementia risk is thought to be potentially nonmodifiable.
Other possible factors Stressful events in life can age the brain by at least four years; High doses of some over-the-counter medicines including hay fever and sleeplessness; Dementia rates are higher near busy roads
Where do you want to live when you are older?
What people tell us 85% of older people want to live in their own homes 35% because it was near shops; 32 % because it was close to work; 19% because it was close to family. Why not supported housing? 40% because they would feel less independent; 28% feared losing access to their community; 26% feared being cut off from family
