Health Effects - Inhalation May cause contact sensitization and upper respiratory tract irritation. 4. FIRST AID MEASURES Eyes If the eye is bonded closed, release eyelashes with warm water by covering with a wet pad. Cyanoacrylates will bond to eye protein causing a lacryamatory effect which will help to debond the adhesive. Keep eye covered with a wet pad until the debonding is complete, usually within 1 to 3 days. Do not force eye open. Medical advice should be sought in cases where solid particles of cyanoacrylate become trapped behind the eyelid, as this may cause abrasive damage. Skin Do not pull bonded skin apart. It may be gently peeled apart using a blunt instrument such as a spoon, preferably with the aid of warm soapy water. Presoaking in a 5% solution of sodium bicarbonate will further assist separation. Ingestion Do not induce vomiting. Have victim drink 1-3 glasses of water to dilute stomach contents. Never administer anything by mouth if a victim is losing consciousness, is unconscious or is convulsing. Obtain medical attention immediately. Inhalation Remove to fresh air. 3 5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards This product may give rise to hazardous fumes in a fire. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES Liquid dries within seconds without the aid of catalysts, heat or solvent evaporation. Use water spray to polymerize and scrape off of the floor. Transfer into suitable containers for recovery or disposal. Ventilate the area. Wear appropriate protective clothing. Prevent the material from entering drains or water courses. 7. HANDLING AND STORAGE Use in well ventilated area. When used in large volumes or odor becomes apparent use local exhaust ventilation. When used in small quantities good general room ventilation is expected to be adequate to control exposures. Keep container tightly closed when not in use. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Store product in refrigerator. Storage temperature should be controlled to between 2 and 5 C. Do not put residual material back into the container as contamination may reduce the shelflife of the bulk product. 8. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION Acute Toxicity Aqueous extracts (maximal level: 5.5 mg/ml) of Indermil polymerized in thin sheets on glass and tested in a Chineses hamster lung cell line (V79) with and without rat liver derived metabolizing enzymes and was shown not to be toxic. There is a reduced risk by inhalation due to the absence of solvents. However, cyanoacrylate vapors are irritating to eyes and mucous membranes. Prolonged and repeated overexposure to vapor may product allergic reactions (rhinitis) with asthma-like symptoms in certain individuals. In the event of fire or heating cyanoacrylate adhesives increase their volatility creating an increased risk of respiratory irritation and sensitization. Liquid Indermil monomer when in direct contact with the intact skin is not expected to be irritating. However, it is irritating to broken or abraded skin, based on OECD testing Guidelines 404 and 405; US 16 CR & 42. Due to the rapid polymerization at the skin surface, contact with the liquid Indermil represents a low order of systemic toxicity by this exposure route. A contact dermatitis may occur after chronic repetitive exposures of the skin to the liquid monomer. The ocular toxicity of several cyanoacrylate monomers (ethyl, isobutyl, octyl, and decyl) have been studied in guinea pigs. All produced an inflammatory response. Weeping, double vision and lacrimation until the polymerization process is complete may occur. Although cured cyanoacrylates (polymer) will not bond to the surface of the eye, corneal damage from abrasion may result. Irritation with pain, corneal abrasions, keratoconjunctivitis and punctate epitheliopathy results; eyelash loss occurs. Chronic exposure to volatile monomer (vapors) may cause giant papillary conjunctivitis. Ingestion does not produce toxicity since polymerization occurs so rapidly that little, if any, of the monomer passes beyond the oropharynx. Almost impossible to swallow due to rapid polymerization. Chronic Toxicity/Carcinogenicity This product is not expected to cause long term adverse health effects. Genotoxicity The product did not exhibit any mutagenic or clastogenic activity in a variety of bacterial and mammalian systems in vitro. This product is not expected to cause any mutagenic effects.
