Rosenthal, PhD., CRC, Professor Office: Education Building, Room 405 Phone: (608) Office Hours: Appointments encouraged Class Time: Class Location: 9:00 p.m. 11:45Noon Wednesdays 218 Education Sciences Building Course Overview: The 984 Seminar: Principles of Behavior Change in Rehabilitation Psychology is one of four core seminars required for the Ph.D. degree in Rehabilitation Psychology. Each student is required to satisfactorily complete this course. In addition, each student must pass a written examination related to this content area, graded by three faculty. The preliminary examination will be administered in mid-january, 2018, prior to the start of the spring semester. The examination in this content area of Intervention/Behavior Change serves as one-quarter of the preliminary examination requirement for the Ph.D. degree in Rehabilitation Psychology. The broad content area of study for this seminar is Intervention. Intervention encompasses counseling theories and techniques; cognitive, behavioral, and psychological interventions; career counseling and job placement; theory, issues, and research. Course Objectives: This is an advanced seminar so each student is expected to have previous introductory coursework and work experience related to the content areas. This seminar will therefore focus on acquisition of advanced knowledge, skills and sensitivity about interventions practiced by rehabilitation counselors and rehabilitation psychologists. Students will also be expected to develop skills related to writing/scholarship (via required writing assignments) and instructional skills (via requirement to prepare effective handouts and class presentations). At the conclusion of this course, each student should have attained the knowledge and skills to: a) teach this content in a graduate program (e.g., techniques, theories, group counseling courses, practicum and internship seminars); b) review and conduct research related to this content. c) practice at an advanced level and effectively supervise entry-level counseling students and professionals;

2 Page 2 Course Themes related to Behavior Change: 1. Theories, systems, and therapeutic processes of the major counseling and psychotherapy approaches 2. Comparative analysis (consistency, research support, best practices/effectiveness, and critiques) of the major counseling and psychotherapy approaches 3. Career counseling theories and interventions 4. Health behavior change theories and interventions 5. Intervention strategies for individuals, groups, and families 6. Applications in rehabilitation 7. Outcomes: counselor variables, client variables, content and process variables, research designs to evaluate outcomes Course Requirements: Each student will be responsible for the following: 1. Three classroom presentations on assigned topics. - Each presentation is worth 20 points for a total of 60 points. Classroom presentations will be expected to be professional and thorough as well as to promote discussion. - Students will work in teams of two for the presentations; one student is the primary presenter (for the presentation points on that topic) and one student will provide feedback and assistance in the role of professional colleague (related to class participation credit). Each student must present on one topic from Presentations (e.g., a theoretical approach to intervention) and one topic from Presentations (e.g., an application or special topic). - Presenters should identify two additional readings related to their topic for promoting discussion and application (e.g., recent research studies that demonstrate the theory/approaches being presented). The presenters must post their additional required readings on the Learn@UW course content page at least one week prior to the presentation. - Presentations must include a handout (e.g., PowerPoint slides). The handout should include key themes and content; discussion and review questions (for use in class and for prelim preparation); and suggested references. 2. A publishable quality page topic paper on a theme related to the content of the course (often a topic related to one of the two presentations). - The paper is worth 30 points. - The paper should be written following the 2010 APA Publication Manual (6 th edition) to become familiar with the new writing guidelines.

3 Page 3 - The subject matter of the paper must be approved in advance by the instructor. 3. Evidence of preparation for and participation in class discussions (including role as assistant when functioning as a secondary presenter) Grading Format: - Class participation is worth 10 points.
