9 H1N1 What Do We Know? In Ontario 495 lab confirmed cases 6 cases hospitalized, with underlying medical conditions 1 death (underlying medical conditions?) Young healthy adults affected as compared to seasonal influenza Age range of cases is between 1 and 80 Locally 3 confirmed cases (mild) ~Ontario H1N1 Influenza A Epidemiologic Summary May 27/09

10 The Spread of H1N1 Similar to seasonal influenza Respiratory droplets from an infected person are released into the air through coughing and sneezing inhaled by others land on surfaces that are touched by the hands and then spread by contaminated hands to the nose and mouth

12 H1N1 Locally Interagency pandemic influenza plan for the health sector was reviewed May 1/09 SDHU Emergency Response Plan activated April 30/09 First case confirmed May 4/09 Two additional laboratory confirmed cases to date Additional individuals & contacts investigated SDHU Emergency Response Plan deactivated May 12/09

16 Infection Prevention and Control 4-week stockpile of personal protective equipment and other supplies Trained SDHU staff conducted N95 mask fit testing for all staff 15 pandemic presentations were provided to 207 SDHU staff (volunteers pending) All public health nurses will complete a series of 8 vaccine related competencies All staff members received H1N1 messaging through Joint Health and Safety Committee

17 Communications 3 Advisory Alerts sent to physicians and other health care providers Included up-to-date clinical care algorithm and reporting information 6 news releases issued and staff responded to 45 English and French media requests SDHU website as a key source of up-to-date information Letters sent to 6 school boards, post-secondary institutions, workplaces, daycares, gyms, faith organizations, seniors centres, municipalities Included H1N1 flu virus fact sheet and handwashing poster

18 Key Messages Wash your hands thoroughly and often with hot water and liquid soap. Use hand sanitizers if water and soap are not available. Sneeze and cough into your sleeve. Stay at home if you are sick and reduce contact with family members and the public
