Effects of LEDs on Photosynthesis and Secondary Metaolites in Roses, Chrysanthemums, and Campanulas Theoharis Ouzounis 1, Xavier Fretté 1, Eva Rosenqvist 2, Carl Otto Ottosen 3 1 Department of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark 2 Department of Agriculture and Ecology, Crop Science, University of Copenhagen, Taastrup, Denmark 3 Department of Food Science, Aarhus University, Aarslev, Denmark

Presentation Outline Ojectives Results Conclusions

Ojectives To characterize the effect of LED lighting in horticultural ornamentals grown in greenhouse facilities on the photosynthetic characteristics and the physiological mechanisms of selected plant species on secondary metaolites which play a crucial role in the iochemical defense of the plant

Roses (Rosa hyrida Scarlet ) Plant material Chrysanthemums (Chrysanthemum morifolium Coral Charm ) Campanulas (Campanula portenschlagiana BluOne ) The plants were grown to flowering (except chrysanthemums) and plant growth was recorded at the end of the experiment

Greenhouse Setup LED array yielding approximately 200 µmol m-2s-1 for 16 hours per day t p e c The temperature in the greenhouse compartments was set to 24 oc and 18 oc during the day and night, respectively n o C (1) 40% Blue 60% Red (2) 20% Blue 80% Red (3) 100% Red (4) 100% White or Control (C)

Photosynthetic measurements Open gas exchange systems CIRAS-2. Real-time measurements of CO 2 uptake, transpiration, stomatal conductance (g s ), and intercellular CO 2 Fresh and dry weight of the stems and leaves, leaf area, and plant height

Chemical analysis Leaf samples are taken randomly for later analysis y HPLC/LCMS Samples were ground with liquid nitrogen and 80% MeOH was used for extraction Separations with a Zorax Eclipse XDB-C18 column (5μm, 150 X 4.6 mm; Agilent) Phenolic acids and flavonoids will e quantified in extracts y HPLC and LCMS at 320 nm and 360 nm, respectively

Growth parameters ROSES Total FW and DW: Highest percentage in the 100%R (up to 15% increase compared the Control) Leaf area: 40%B/60%R, 20%B/80%R, and 100%R treatments (up to 30% higher than the Control) Plant height: Not affected Numer of color uds: Not affected Pure RED demonstrated morphological anormalities

Conclusions The comination of RED and BLUE LED lighting has a positive effect on growth and development of roses, chrysanthemum and campanulas Pure RED light increases total fresh and dry weight BUT demonstrates the most extensive anormalities BLUE/RED lighting treatment seem to have no significant effect on photosynthesis Stomatal conductance increases with increasing amount of BLUE light The amount of secondary metaolites increases with additional of BLUE light
