2 Welcome to GHCA s Bloodborne Pathogen Training based upon the Occupational Safety and Health Administration s (OSHA) Standard 29 CFR The purpose of this training is to eliminate or minimize employee occupational exposure to blood or certain other potentially infectious body fluids.

3 Training Objectives Have an understanding of OSHA s BBP Standard Understand GHCA s Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Plan and follow precautions Recognize symptoms of HIV and Hepatitis Know what may or may not cause exposure and what to do if occurs

4 Risk of Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure to blood or body fluids Infection related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and/or hepatitis in any form, including hepatitis B and hepatitis C (HBV and HCV) Although the risk is minimal-it is very possible to become exposed Due to the serious risk of exposure, the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released a Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR ), which regulates how to handle the risk of exposure in the workplace. Bloodborne Pathogens are microorganisms carried by the blood such as hepatitis viruses (HBV and HCV) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

5 GHCA Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan OSHA s Standard requires employers to have a written exposure control plan which includes universal or standard precautions for employees to use The plan must also list safe work practices like using PPE, safe housekeeping and provisions for obtaining the hepatitis B vaccine, evaluation of exposure and follow-up PPE is personal protective equipment such as gloves, gowns and protective glasses.

6 GHCA has developed the Exposure Control Plan through regulations set up by the federal Occupational Safety and health Administration GHCA s Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan can be found on the Agency website: goldenrodhillscommunityaction.org Employee Intranet under Human Resources/Documents

7 GHCA Exposure Plan Provides requirements for biohazard labels Outlines procedures for keeping medical information confidential Includes a training program which teaches employees how to avoid exposure to bloodborne pathogens through prevention methods including universal precautions

8 GHCA Plan Section I. Exposure Determination GHCA has determined certain employees are at risk for exposure by the nature of their job duties: A. Health Services Director B. ALL Agency Nurses C. WIC/Health Services/Head Start staff D. Staff transporting biohazard containers

9 Tasks or procedures that would cause exposure include: A. Performing finger or toe sticks for hemoglobin or lead testing B. Administering immunizations or TB testing

10 C. Transportation or disposal of biohazard containers D. Disposal of regulated waste and contaminated sharps E. Cleaning of work areas and equipment where exposure occurs To protect yourself against HIV and hepatitis, avoid direct exposure to potentially infectious materials such as blood and body fluids.

11 HIV Causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Attacks your immune system Symptoms include: fever, chronic fatigue, loss of appetite, skin rash, weight loss, night sweats, diarrhea There is no cure at this time

12 Hepatitis Hepatitis is more common than HIV and often exhibits no symptoms until it develops into serious liver problems. Includes HBV and HCV Virus attacks the liver Various strains that can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis, liver cancer, liver failure and death Symptoms include: headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, fever, jaundice, dark urine

13 Transmission The transmission of both HIV and Hepatitis can happen through exposure to blood and body fluids such as semen, vaginal secretions, saliva, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid, peritoneal fluid, amniotic fluid Transmission can also occur through unattached human tissue or organs

14 GHCA Plan Section II. Universal Precautions Shall be observed to prevent contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials Universal Precautions means all human blood and certain human blood and certain human body fluids are treated as if known to be infectious for HIV, HBV, HCV and other bloodborne pathogens

15 Actions that do NOT cause exposure Coughing from infected person Sneezing from infected person Touching an infected person Using the same equipment as infected person (showers, toilets, water fountains)

16 Actions that do cause exposure Sexual contact with infected person Sharing needles with infected person Needle sticks with infected needles or sharps Direct contact with infected body fluid and broken skin Exposure to hepatitis CAN occur by touching dried or caked blood or contaminated surfaces

17 Avoiding Exposure Take universal precautions and wear appropriate PPE Treat all potentially infectious materials as if they are infected Follow hand washing policy and use antiseptic hand cleanser as necessary Take great care in handling all sharp items Do not eat drink, apply cosmetics or lip balm, smoke or handle contact lens where there is a reasonable likelihood of infectious material

18 Precautions you should take Wash immediately after exposure Use antiseptic hand cleanser if water unavailable Do not splash, spray or spatter infectious materials while you are handling them Dispose of contaminated sharps using the appropriate container

19 Any equipment including but not limited to scales, measuring boards or blood testing machines that become contaminated with blood or other potentially infectious materials shall be cleaned as soon as possible by appropriate staff. GHCA staff will use Clorox Clean-Up, gloves and single use paper towels. GHCA Head Start staff will use a bleach solution of 1:10 with gloves and single use paper towels.

20 Precaution DON TS Do Not break needles or sharps Do Not have food or drink in exposure area Do Not replace caps on needles Do Not handle infectious material without use of the proper PPE Do Not suction or pipette potentially infectious material by mouth

21 Proper PPE or personal protective equipment includes: gloves gowns, protective glasses, etc. Before you put on PPE make sure you inspect it to see that it is in good condition with no damage. All personal protective equipment used at GHCA will be provided at no cost to employees. All personal protective equipment will be removed prior to leaving the work area. It shall be placed in the appropriate container for disposal.

22 Housekeeping Preventing exposure to BBP s is as simple as good housekeeping on a regular schedule Follow cleaning and decontamination procedures in GHCA s Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Plan pages 3-5

23 Safe Handling and Disposal Use leak proof containers - Sharps containers Place externally contaminated containers inside another container Place containers upright and do not allow to overfill In the event of a large spill and paper towels become sufficiently saturated to be deemed regulated waste, they will be double-bagged in red bio-hazard bags and incinerated by a medical waste contractor.

24 Post-Exposure Evaluation and (pages 6-9 in Exposure Control Plan) Wash area & Report immediately to your supervisor Allow for investigation and obtain a confidential medical evaluation and blood testing Document all pertinent information Follow Confidentiality Policy Allow for follow-up and discussion of exposure Obtain HBV Vaccine it is offered free of charge through GHCA

25 Protect Yourself Use universal and standard precautions Wear the appropriate PPE Prevent accidental sharps injury and dispose of sharps properly Follow proper cleaning and decontamination procedures Report Immediately if you are exposed to infectious material and cooperate with follow-up
