Our BiB tam hav bn incrdibly busy ovr th last acadmic school yar collcting important masurmnts and qustionnairs from ovr 5,000 Yar 3 and 4 childrn across 70 schools as part of our BiB Primary School Yars projct. It has bn a mammoth achivmnt, and on only possibl du to th commitmnt and nthusiasm of our wondrful BiB parnts, childrn and our BiB tachrs. W also want to say a hug thank you to our School Nurss who hav bn hlping us collct hight, wight, blood prssur, blood, and physical activity lvls (using a dvic calld an acclromtr) from BiB childrn in schools. But our BiB parnts shouldn t fl lft out! As part of our BiB Growing Up projct w will b inviting all parnts who originally signd up to BiB to com back and tll us about how your livs hav changd sinc th birth of your BiB baby. Adults who sit for long priods of tim incras th risk of obsity, hart disas, diabts and som cancrs. A rcnt study of ours found primary school childrn in Bradford sit for approximatly 10 hours pr day, and spnd 70% of thir tim in class sitting down. Childrn of cours hav to b in a classroom to larn, but at BiB w wantd to invstigat whthr you always hav to b sitting down to larn! So along with rsarchrs from Loughborough Univrsity w dvlopd th Stand Out in Class projct. Ovr th past two yars w hav workd with yar 5 pupils in four primary schools across Bradford Hr s what som of our pupils said about thm: I think it s prtty good to stand up rathr than sitting down I think it s rally good having thm, bcaus somtims you fidgt a lot whn you r sitting down to s whthr standing dsks in classrooms can rduc th amount of tim childrn spnd sitting and hav othr halth bnfits too. During th projct w hav masurd childrn s sitting, standing and walking tim, gnral halth, mmory and larning, acadmic progrss and classroom bhaviour bfor and aftr w hav installd standing dsks in classrooms. W hav also talkd to kids and tachrs about how thy found th dsks. W ar busy crunching numbrs to find out whthr using standing dsks impact on ths outcoms. But w know from talking to kids who hav usd thm that thy ar big hit for both thm and thir tachrs. This typ of lifstyl oftn bgins in childhood and maks us mor likly to hav ill halth in futur. W hav rcntly studid physical activity and body fat lvls in mor than 300 Bradford childrn agd 1-5 yars old. Childrn wor a monitor around thir waist for on wk to assss thir movmnts and body fat lvls wr masurd by taking painlss pinchs of fat bnath th skin using caliprs. W found that childrn who movd lss had highr lvls of body fat. Othr studis agr: mor activ childrn ar gnrally fittr, halthir, and happir. With parnt s prmission, w ar now collcting movmnt data from primary school childrn who ar taking part in th Born in Bradford Growing Up study! W want to masur how activ Bradford childrn ar, how long ach day thy ar sdntary, if thy slp nough and how all ths factors might affct thir halth and wllbing. To do this w nd childrn to war a small movmnt snsor for 7 days and nights and to bhav as thy would during a normal wk. 5 8 BiB Nws Mt th tam Danil Bingham Tll us a littl bit about yourslf Hllo I am Danil, I am a Snior Rsarch Fllow hr at BiB. I am a bhavioural pidmiologist, (which basically mans that I look at th rasons why popl do or do not ngag in halthy lifstyl bhaviours!). I am particulary intrstd in physical activity and sdntary (.g. not moving) bhaviour of childrn, and factors which influnc childhood obsity. I am originally from Nunaton in Warwickshir, but I movd to Bradford in 2012 and hav workd for BiB sinc thn. I hav studid in Livrpool, Loughborough and from 2012 to 2016 I undrwnt my doctorial training hr in Bradford. Sinc 2016, I hav workd as a full tim Rsarch Fllow on diffrnt studis within BiB. I wantd to work in this ara of scinc bcaus I hav always bn fascinatd by how xrcis in any form can hlp with prvnting both physical and mntal illnsss, and I wantd to s what th bst way to promot xrcis and halthy living is. What ar you currntly working on at BiB? I am currntly working on th planning and dvlopmnt of th Sport England Local Dlivry pilot, whr along with Activ Bradford w ar aiming to incras physical activity of childrn agd 5-14 yars. Activ Bradford hav rcivd funding from th National Lottry to incras th opportunitis childrn agd 5-14 hav to tak part in physical activity and sport. BiB s job is to look at how wll this is don and to s if th activitis thy do, rally do incras childrn s physical activity and halth.
