5 Operational Definitions Diversity: The variation of social, biological and cultural identities, or the sum total of experiences among people existing together in a defined setting Inclusion: Creating policies, practices and a welcoming environment that demonstrate respect and enables each individual to perform to his or her highest potential. Respect: Taking the time to realize that everyone sees and experiences the world in a unique way. Once you realize these differences you can make efforts to respect people in the way they feel respect.

6 DIVERSITY What Does It Really Mean? Diversity Refers to the presence of differing cultures, languages, ethnicities, races, genders, sexual orientation, religious sects, abilities, classes, ages and national origins of the people in an institution or setting such as a school, workplace, community or neighborhood. Diversity is not only an initiative or a value, diversity is a reality. There is no one way of living or being, no single set of experiences that defines every culture, identity, region, or time period. Variation, difference, and diversity are facts of life.

7 Inclusion What Does It Really Mean? Inclusion Acknowledges diversity and ensures that despite difference in identity, age, ability, race, ethnicity, religion, class, etc. that the needs of ALL individuals are understood and met within a given setting. Inclusion is involvement and empowerment, where the inherent worth and dignity of all people are recognized. An inclusive university promotes and sustains a sense of belonging; it values and practices respect for the talents, beliefs, backgrounds, and ways of living of its members.

19 Georgia Judge Denies Transgender Man s Dangerous Name-Change Petition A transgender Georgia man s petition to change his name to reflect his gender identity was denied because it might offend the sensibilities and mores of other state residents. August resident Rowan Feldhaus filed a name change petition in the Superior court of Columbia County in July He provided all necessary documentation at a hearing in February, including an affidavit from his therapist confirming he is transgender and that changing his name would be an important part of his treatment. Superior Court Judge J. David Roper denied the request unless Feldhaus chose a middle name other than Elijah because it is not gender-neutral and he doesn t approve of changing names from male to female-male names to obvious female names, and vice versa. Roper also said it could be dangerous for people not to know someone s gender by someone s name.

Do not use slang terms to refer to any group of people
