Pain, Anger & Grief - How do they flock together? All are meant to be helpful All forms of communication that may provide important information for decision-making All are normal until they re not: Pain becomes chronic Anger becomes rage Grief becomes depression All can interact with perverse synergy to make each other worse
Who cares about emotions when you have chronic pain? Emotional Distress & Rehabilitation Outcomes
Acceptance vs Change ~ A Major Factor Underlying Anger & Grief ~ A foundational process that highly influences pain, anger & grief How do I know what to accept vs change? Everyone has glass ceilings (limits) Nudge to find out (try an experiment) Pacing is another word for Nudging

Emotions are Communications ~ Like a Message in a Bottle ~
Emotions are Communications ~ Like a Message in a Bottle ~
Emotional Communications Belong at the Decision- Making Table
Paingry
Paingry Points People with chronic pain experience greater anger than community samples without pain. Anger arousal is associated with greater pain intensity, muscle tension and interference with function and relationships in time-lagged analyses. The greater anger, the greater consequences. Anger regulation whether expression (anger out) or inhibition (anger in) is associated with greater pain intensity, muscle tension and interference in time-lagged analyses. Uh-oh now what? Best advice: Blowing up at people typically alienates them; doesn t resolve anything Stuffing down merely buries problems; leads to seething anger typically alienates other; doesn t resolve anything; bad for health. Use some anger control but use anger energy to resolve problem Anger as a secondary emotion look for primary emotion
Anger as monster to be controlled Trying to control anger all the time is like
Anger as energy to be used Use anger to energize hope & making a plan for change
Anger that resolves Awareness in body, emotion Name I m mad Validate Of course I m mad Learn What is my anger trying to tell me? Evaluate Is this an accurate & helpful message now? Make a plan to resolve Acceptance vs Change

Chronic Pain & Grief - 2 Permission giving at the edge of tears Fear of losing control & becoming lost in grief Anger at feeling weak, helpless Dismissal because grief feels useless Take the time to grieve Take extra care of yourself Eating, hydration, movement Sleep Connection Spiritual practices (meaningful activities)
Grief that ebbs & flows Awareness in body, emotional experience Masks of melancholy Name I feel sad Validate Of course I miss Learn What is my grief trying to tell me? > basic adult need Evaluate Really? Plan Accept
Chronic Pain, Grief, Loss & Our Search for Meaning At common core is an existential vacuum containing emptiness, vulnerability and exhaustion Grief seeks meaning (Frankl, Man s Search for Meaning ) Meaning is often intertwined with spiritual & religious beliefs & practices Spirituality & Chronic Pain: Finding Meaning in Misery, 2-Part Webinar, LivePlanBe.ca
