1 SYNTHETIC VS WHOLE FOODS NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS My Healing Oils Notes Compiled by Darreck
2 In the beginning of time man had all the nutritional value he needed for healthy living in the natural foods planted in the earth. Over the years, this nutritional value has been dramatically reduced. The need for supplementation is essential. When choosing the right supplementation, it is important to understand the difference between synthetic and whole food based nutrition.
3 What is Synthetic Supplements? Synthetic supplements are nutrients that have been synthetically (man-made) derived in a laboratory. These nutrients have an identical chemical structure as the whole food derived nutrition. They do not deliver the same results though.
4 One of the most highly processed and publicized vitamins is Vitamin C. The synthetic form of Vitamin C is `ascorbic acid.` However, ascorbic acid is not really vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is the outer ring that serves as a protective shell for the entire complex that is known as Vitamin C.
5 Vitamin C has several components, including ascorbic acid, tyrosinase, Vitamin P, Vitamin K and Vitamin J factors, and also ascorbigen and bioflavinoid complexes. A lot of Vitamin C on the market today usually is in the form of 500 mg even 1000 mg. As you can see, what they did was just tease out the ascorbic acid component of the functional architectural Vitamin C complex. Basically, they are giving you the eggshell, and not giving you the actual whole component of the egg, including the egg white and egg yolk. It has been proven that humans with scurvy, when fed ascorbic acid did not improve very much, if at all. In humans fed natural Vitamin C complex in its whole food form, scurvy was eliminated. This is another example why ISOLATED SYNTHETIC FRACTIONATED, CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS DO NOT WORK.
6 The perfect example of this difference can be seen in an automobile. An automobile is a wonderfully designed complex machine that needs all of its parts to be present and in place to function properly. Wheels are certainly an important part of the whole, but you could never isolate them from the rest of the car, call them a car or expect them to function like a car. They need the engine, body and everything else.
7 The same analogy applies to the vitamin C (ascorbic acid) or vitamin E (delta tocopherol) you can find on most health food store shelves. They are parts of an entire complex that serve a purpose when part of the whole. However, they cannot do the job of the entire complex by themselves.
8 Isolated nutrients or synthetic nutrients are not natural, in that they are never found by themselves in nature. Taking these isolated nutrients, especially at the ultra-high doses found in formulas today, is more like taking a drug. Studies show the body treats these isolated and synthetic nutrients like xenobiotics (foreign substances).
9 When you consume synthetic ascorbic acid, the body must gather all of the other components from the body`s tissues in order to make the complete complex. If the other components are not present, the body will simply eliminate the ascorbic acid in the urine.
10 Synthetic supplementation can also be very dangerous on the body. Due to the lack of absorption, they can stress the liver and kidneys as the body tries to detoxify and eliminate the excess. Heavy ascorbic acid supplementation has been shown to thicken arterial walls by up to 2.5x creating an increased risk of heart disease. High doses of synthetic vitamin E has been shown to leach nutrients like calcium and magnesium out of the bones. High doses of synthetic vitamin A are linked with higher rates of cancer. Meanwhile, natural vitamin A sources such as carrots and spinach have been shown to prevent cancer. There is clearly a difference between whole food based nutrition and synthetic supplementation.
11 Many processed foods such as cereals, snack bars, & yogurts contain synthetically derived supplements to bring up nutritional values. They are often marketed as healthy foods due to the inflated nutritional values. However, this is very misleading. These synthetic supplements offer very little functional value and often are loaded with sugar, artificial flavoring, pasteurized dairy and other toxic substances.

13 What is Whole Food Supplements? Whole food supplements are what their name suggests: Supplements made from concentrated whole foods. The vitamins found within these supplements are not isolated. They are highly complex structures that combine a variety of enzymes, coenzymes, antioxidants, trace elements, activators and many other unknown or undiscovered factors all working together synergistically, to enable this vitamin complex to do its job in your body.
14 Synergy and Potency The various parts of a natural vitamin complex work together in a synergistic manner. Synergy means that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Nutritionist Judith DeCava puts it best: "Separating the group of compounds (in a vitamin complex) converts it from a physiological, biochemical, active micronutrient into a disabled, debilitated chemical of little or no value to living cells. The synergy is gone."
15 Summary Synthetic Supplements The majority of commercial vitamin supplements are made up of synthetic vitamins do not perform the same functions in your body as vitamins found naturally in whole food Many synthetic vitamins deplete your body of other nutrients and tax your kidneys before being excreted through your urine Synthetic nutritional supplements are difficult for our bodies to digest and absorb. Too much of the chemicals may bring toxicity to our bodies. Cheaper to Produce Can be easily purchase over the counter / pharmacy Whole Food / Natural Supplements Do not have artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, and preservatives, hydrogenated fats and are not genetically modified. So it is condensed with nutrients and free of additives. Nutritional supplements have the necessary natural goodness of nature with a combination of enzymes, antioxidants, elements and minerals. They are known to work synergistically with our bodies. Natural whole food based supplements easily four our bodies to digest and absorb. More Expensive Difficult to get
