Sometimes Life Gets This Way. With FASD, It Stays This Way!!!!
What is FASD? Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder FASD is the leading cause of mental retardation in western civilization today! (Journal of American Medical Association) FASD is caused by a mother s drinking alcoholic beverages during pregnancy. Research shows that alcohol damage to the developing baby occurs over a wide continuum. Damage varies due to volume of alcohol ingested, timing during pregnancy, blood alcohol levels, genetics and environmental factors. At the mild end, damage may be either loss of some intellectual functioning (IQ), attention deficit disorder, hearing and visual problems, and higher than normal pain tolerance.
What is FASD Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder At the severe end, damage may be severe loss of intellectual potential, severe vision problems, dyslexia, serious maxiofacial deformities, dental abnormalities, heart defects, immune system malfunctioning, behavioral problems, attention deficit disorders, hyper-activity, extreme impulsiveness, poor judgment, difficulty with memory retention and retrieval, deafness, little or no capacity for moral judgment or interpersonal empathy, sociopathic behavior, epilepsy, p tremors, cerebral palsy, renal failure, heart failure, death.
FASD Terminology FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) FAE (Fetal Alcohol Effect) ARBD (Alcohol-related l l dbithd Birth Defects) ARND (Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder) pfas (Partial Fetal Alcohol Syndrome)
Who is at Greatest risk for having a child with FASD? Women with a college education Unmarried woman Female students Women who smoke Women in households w/greater than $50,000 annual income
FASD STATISTICS The combined rate of FAS and ARND is estimated to be at least 9.1/1,000. This conservative rate--nearly one in every 100 live births--confirms the perception of many health professionals that fetal alcohol exposure is a serious problem. Sampson PD, Streissguth AP, Bookstein FL, Little RE,Clarren SK, Dehaene P, Hanson JW, Graham JM Jr. Department of Statistics, University of Washington, Seattle 98195, USA. Teratology 1997 Nov; 56(5):317-26

PRIMARY CHARACTERISTICS Children.Adolescents Adults Memory problems Difficulty storing/retrieving information Inconsistent performance (on and off) Impulsivity, distractibility, disorganization Ability to repeat instructions, but not able to put them into action Difficulty w/abstractions money time
PRIMARY CHARACTERISTICS Children Adolescents Adults Cognitive processing deficits (may think more slowly) Slow auditory pace (pick up every third word) Developmental ll lags (acting younger than actual age) Inability to predict outcomes or understand consequences
TYPICAL DIFFICULTIES IQ may not match adaptive functioning Impaired reading, math, spelling Does not complete tasks/chores thus appears oppositional Has trouble determining what to do in a given situation Will say they understand when they do not and will not ask for help
MORE DIFFICULTIES. Verbal skills exceed level of understanding Lack social cue ability Trouble following multiple l directions Everyone is their friend (danger..danger!!) Repeatedly break rules Seen as lazy, uncooperative, unmotivated Major hygiene problems
SECONDARY DISABILITIES Mental Health Issues Disrupted School Experiences Trouble with the Law Inappropriate sexual behavior Confinement tin treatment t t centers or jails Alcohol and Drug Problems Dependant living situations Employment Problems
