2 Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavioural disorder of childhood. It affects about 3 5% of school aged children. ADHD is diagnosed much more often in boys than in girls. (3:1) Most children with ADHD also have at least one other developmental or behavioural problem. They may also have another psychiatric problem, such as depression or bipolar disorder Causes ADHD is thought to be due to genetic factors as it seems to run in families ADHD was initially seen as a social dysfunction due to poor parenting now recognised as due to cerebral dysfunction especially of the frontal lobe and the parietal brain caused by minimal brain injury due to birth trauma Encephalitis other unknown reasons The symptoms of ADHD are aggravated by overstimulation, poor diet, tiredness, stress especially due to fragmentation of family environment 2

4 Global Developmental Delay and Dyspraxia Developmental dyspraxia is a developmental disorder that may affect fine and gross motor skills, receptive language processing, and speech. As with any developmental disorder, the effects of developmental dyspraxia can range from mild to severe. Dyspraxia affects an estimated 5% of the population, but is not necessary linked with learning disabilities Causes The cause of developmental dyspraxia is not fully understood. Researchers believe it is a neurological disorder with a hereditary component. However, brain imaging research has not confirmed a connection between dyspraxia and specific areas of the brain or differences in brain development. In most cases, children with developmental dyspraxia are born with the disorder. It occurs more frequently in males than females. 4
5 Symptoms People with Dyspraxia may have difficulties in planning their movements and being aware of the space around them: They frequently bump into and trip over things. They may have a clumsy posture and poor muscle tone. They might ihthave difficulties with perception: They find it difficult to judge heights and distances: making them appear to be more clumsy. Co ordinating different parts of the body: They may find it hard to catch, throw and balance as well as moving the different parts of their body without looking. Sport and dancing can cause acute problems. Laterality: It may be difficult to work out right from left without a reminder. Hand writing: They tend to write laboriously slowly and/or untidily and illegibly. Accurate copying can be difficult. Language: They may find it difficult to pronounce some words and some may stutter. Concentration: They may take a long time to complete a task and find it difficult to do more than one thing at a time. Short term memory and sequencing tasks: They may find it hard to make sense of information. They may keep forgetting and losing things Organisation and thought: They may operate in a muddled way, having little sense of direction, time or weight. They may find it difficult to express themselves. Response to external stimulation: They may be over or under sensitive to noise, touch, light and taste. 5
6 The nervous system seems overwhelmed by activity and unable to keep still preventing thinking processes and reflection Health Consciousness seems to be too deep in the body As a result people might appear heavy, sleepy and dull Willing Feeling Thinking ADHD Dyspraxia Metabolic System Overwhelms the nerve sense system The person is unaware of his movements and is rules by impulses Therapeutic gesture: To help the person become aware of and feel at home in his/her body Rhythmic System is disturbed, the inner rhythm is lost Nerve/Sense System Enters to deeply into the metabolic system The person becomes over conscious of his movements and cramps up impulses cannot get through Therapeutic gesture: To enable to person to lift out a little, to relax. These people need a lot of acceptance and warmth. 6
