2 Who is NASTAD? Mission NASTAD strengthens state and territory-based leadership, expertise and advocacy and brings them to bear on reducing the incidence of HIV and viral hepatitis infections and on providing care and support to all who live with HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis. Vision NASTAD s vision is a world free of HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis.

3 Who is NASTAD? NASTAD is the non-profit national association of state health department program directors who administer HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis prevention, care and treatment programs funded by state and federal governments. o Domestic Programs Health Care Access Prevention and Surveillance Health Equity Viral Hepatitis o Policy and Legislative Affairs o Global Program

4 NASTAD and Viral Hepatitis Since 2000, NASTAD has been providing viral hepatitis support and technical assistance to health departments. o Due to the similarities in populations at risk, an emphasis on integration of HIV, STD, VH, immunization and behavioral health activities at the client level NASTAD s viral hepatitis program has three major components o Technical assistance o Public policy o Coalition engagement Priorities include o Health Equity o Drug User Health/Young People who Inject Drugs o Treatment Access o Increasing Federal Funding

5 NASTAD HCV Priorities Health department capacity and expertise o Support and technical assistance o Advocacy with Congress and federal agencies Access to prevention services o HCV testing o Syringe services programs o Mental health and substance use treatment Drug user health o Access to prevention AND treatment services Addressing HCV through a Health Equity Approach o African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Pacific Islanders and immigrants Advocacy and policy

8 Community Engagement and Advocacy NASTAD and health departments are committed to implement innovative, accessible programs that meet community needs. NASTAD and its members, as public health leaders, pledge to: Gain support for health department programs through ongoing, mutually-beneficial relationships with communities Promote promising practices related to community engagement around HIV and viral hepatitis Expand stakeholder relationships beyond disease silos, across health departments, academia, community advocacy groups, community- based organizations and national coalitions to promote innovative community engagement Perform assessments and share evaluations that justify the investment of federal and state resources for community engagement activities

10 Hepatitis Appropriations Partnership NASTAD convenes the Hepatitis Appropriations Partnership (HAP) is a national coalition based in Washington, DC and includes community-based organizations, public health and provider associations, national hepatitis and HIV organizations, and diagnostic, pharmaceutical and bio-technology companies. HAP works with policy makers and public health officials to increase federal support for hepatitis prevention, testing, education, research and treatment. For more information: mjohnson@nastad.org
