1 In September 2004, the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), supported by the President s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)/Centers for Disease Control (CDC), launched Family AIDS Care and Education Services (FACES) in Nairobi. By March 2005, FACES expanded to two sites, with a second site in Kisumu the Nyanza region of western Kenya. As one of PEPFAR s local partners in Kenya, FACES is working to reduce HIV incidence and HIV- related morbidity and mortality through close collaboration with the Kenyan Ministries of Health (MOH) in the implementation of comprehensive, quality HIV services including HIV care and treatment, Prevention of Mother- to- Child Transmission (PMTCT), Cervical Cancer Screening and Prevention (CCSP), Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC), and HIV Testing and Counseling (HTC) services at public, private, and faith- based health facilities. FACES is building local capacity and expertise in HIV management through associated research, training, clinical mentorship, logistical support, community engagement, and through salary support to the MOH for health care workers. Uliza! Clinicians HIV Hotline is also building health care worker capacity by providing free s HIV consultations via cellular phone in real time. FACES support extends over 131 health facilties in all, including 131 HIV care and 130 ART sites in Nairobi and Nyanza; 132 PMTCT sites in Nyanza; 26 VMMC sites in Nyanza; and 137 HTC sites in Nairobi and Nyanza.
