2 I. Context: Poverty and HIV/Aids HIV/AIDS represents a real shock which affects the different forms social, physical and financial of resources that households have. For all the people whose resources are already low, like the poorest populations of Southern countries, HIV/AIDS becomes an aggravating factor which can lead to extreme situations of degradation. The lower is the initial position of these families, the faster will be the process. The fight against HIV/AIDS also goes through the fight against precarity and poverty whose victims are the people affected by HIV/AIDS. Since 2008, PlaNet Finance has initiated several projects of socio-economic strengthening aiming to secure the protection of households affected by HIV/AIDS. Our goal is to assist the actors of the fight against HIV/AIDS in their efforts to create income-generating activities (IGA) in the benefit of their clients having access to care and being able to develop a microenterprise. 2

Our approach To facilitate the development of income-generating activities (IGA) and the access to microfinance services in order to reduce social and economic vulnerability of households affected by HIV/Aids. PLWHA capable of self-employment No financial or material guarantees + No know-how in IGA Sustainable access to microfinance services + No long-term vision but only survival instinct + Low level of education, etc. Reimbursement of loans Improving incomes and prevention = Payment risks Maintaining incomes Improving living conditions Using proper care = Exclusion of people deemed too risky Maintaining productivity Fewer deaths assets Reducing vulnerability to disease Sustainability of MFIs* *Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) Better health Breaking the vicious circle of poverty and disease by supporting the creation of IGA by People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and encouraging MFIs to finance their activities through microcredit. 3

Our methodology Working in synergy with the actors involved in the fight against AIDS PlaNet Finance offers its expertise in microfinance to donors, institutions specialized on health, NGOs and associations of PLWHA. Willingness to enroll in the national strategy against HIV / AIDS response in each country Supporting MFIs in the management of risks related to AIDS and reduce stigmatization of PLWHA through a better understanding of the disease MFIs need to take measures against risks linked to the epidemic while continuing to serve the poorest populations. PlaNet Finance supports the MFIs in their implementation of risk-mitigation strategies and educates staff and clients of MFIs on HIV / AIDS Strengthening PLWHA through development of Income Generating Activities Many PLWHA have now access to care, but are still very vulnerable economically. PlaNet Finance supports their desire to develop an IGA and have access to microfinance services 4

Our projects Socio-economic reintegration of people living with AIDS by developing income-generating activities Countries: Benin ( ), Burkina Faso ( ) Partners: National Program of Fight Against AIDS (Benin) Programme d Appui au Monde Associatif et Communautaire de lutte contre le VIH/Sida (Burkina Faso) 12 associations involved in fight against AIDS, 7 MFIs Results: 2 guarantee funds created 12 income-generating activities intermediaries trained 630 people living with HIV trained in income-generating activities 280 people living with HIV beneficiaries of microloans Implementation of the second phase of the project in Benin in August

Our projects Awareness and prevention campaign on STD/AIDS for MFIs customers Countries: Benin ( ), Morocco ( ) Partners: National Program of Fight Against AIDS (Benin) Management Units of the Global Fund/Health Ministry (Morocco) 7 associations involved in fight against AIDS, 6 MFIs Results: 86 loan officers trained in training techniques for the prevention of STD/AIDS 10,379 MFIs customers informed and sensitized on STD/AIDS, preventions methods and testing centers 7

Our projects Feasibility study for the establishment of an MFI dedicated to family tutors of AIDS orphans Country: Burundi (2010) Partner: AMADE Burundi Member associations of AMADE International Activities: Environmental Analysis This study was conducted at the request of Amade. The microfinance sector remains underdeveloped in this country in post-conflict situation. AMADE tried first to work with existing MFIs but without success. It has now obtained approval of the authorities in 2009 to create its own institution. 9 IV. Our perspectives Broadening our geographical location Develop Microfinance Plus Health programs in connection with the fight against HIV / AIDS within the network of PlaNet Finance. Strengthen our partnerships Collaborate with professionals and organizations in health issues. Support programs socioeconomic support to PLWHA Bring our expertise to stakeholders in the fight against AIDS, who wish to develop income generating activities for beneficiaries, but without skills to do it. 9
