3 UNICEF PROVIDES PROCUREMENT SERVICES AS PART OF ITS MANDATE Helping partners access resources for the benefit of children UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly: to advocate for children s rights: To help meet their basic needs and to expand opportunities for them to reach their full potential To mobilize political will and material resources to help countries institute appropriate policies and services for children and families
4 WHAT IS UNICEF PROCUREMENT SERVICES? A key component of UNICEF s overall development strategy and an important part of the development package that UNICEF makes available to countries and partners. A tool for assisting partners in accessing resources external to UNICEF for the provision of vital supplies and related services. A way to maximize the benefit of efforts on behalf of children and families in the procurement of quality, valuepriced supplies and services, in a timely manner.

9 MALARIA S BURDEN IN AFRICA Malaria is a major killer of children in Africa 3,000 children die daily due to malaria Malaria causes severe complications during pregnancy, and contributes to increase in maternal mortality Malaria is a major cause of poverty with $10 billion - $12 billion lost annually in income in Africa alone.
10 SUPPLIES TO COMBAT MALARIA Use of insecticide treated nets can reduce child mortality by 20% and malaria infections by 50% The new technology of Long lasting nets (LN) is a major breakthrough in malaria prevention: the user does not need to retreat! Long lasting continue to repel and kill mosquitoes for the lifespan of the net (3-5 years).
