2 Anir Center for International Medicine and Cultural Concerns (A-CIMCC) Culture of Healing The Anir Culture of Healing Programs are about 15-days in length and take place in the Western Cape region of South Africa and offer an optional photo safari in the Eastern Cape or near Kruger National Park at the end of the program. This Experience is recommended for medical, nursing and public health students, medical and policy professors, community counselors and social workers dealing with the HIV community, and anyone interested in the culture of healing on the continent of Africa. The South Africa course focus on the HIV & AIDS and TB pandemic. Participants will receive HIV awareness training from grassroots organizations and cultural healers who are working on preventing the continued spread of HIV & AIDS and TB in their community. Open discussion workshops with persons living with HIV in the community and in prison, and an overview of maternal child health in regards to HIV & AIDS in South Africa.
3 A-CIMCC - Culture of Healing: Infectious Diseases HIV & AIDS and TB and Requirements: Participants must be 18 years of age or older. Be enrolled in a course of study or in a profession where the program material is appropriate There is required outside reading and viewing that will need to be completed before the trip Suggested movie and video viewing is HIGHLY recommended as is suggested reading For those persons wanting verification for having completed the course there is a written 20 question test. The test is not mandatory; only if verification is requested. 5 A-CIMCC - Culture of Healing: Infectious Diseases HIV & AIDS and TB and Objectives Participants will learn about and be made aware of: International conflicting views on how and where HIV started and be asked to comment on and debate these views Distinguish HIV-2 from HIV-1 with respect to its infectiousness, prevalence, testing and clinical treatment in both the USA and South Africa (RSA) Discuss ABC Prevention strategy and its effectiveness Dispel some of the common misconceptions about how one can and cannot get HIV Learn about the stigma of HIV & AIDS and how it is dealt with in RSA and the USA Will contrast the clinical HIV staging system used by the World Health Organization with the one used in the USA Learn host factors, viral factors, acquired factors and clinical indicators that influence the rate of HIV-disease progress Medication side-effects and compliance how dose this issues differ between (or do they differ) South Africa and the United States
6 A-CIMCC - Culture of Healing: Infectious Diseases HIV & AIDS and TB and Objectives continued Identify the HIV & AIDS prevention needs of women and why they would or would not work on the continent of Africa Learn about the importance of male circumcision in African Culture Learn about dealing with HIV and AIDS in the male prison population Discuss measures that should be taken to control the HIV pandemic on a global scale and address the special challenges and what role do physicians and public health practitioners play Worldwide (according to the CDC), TB is the leading cause of death among persons with HIV infection Students will review the guidelines for intensified tuberculosis case-finding and isoniazid preventive therapy for people living with HIV in resource-constrained settings
7 A-CIMCC - Culture of Healing: Infectious Diseases HIV & AIDS and TB and All of our guides and instructors are local South Africans who lived through the struggle of apartheid and have spent the subsequent years from 1990 to the present involved in community action building and developing social awareness programs. In addition, our Anir Experience Education Specialists, who are from the USA, have been working and studying in their field of interest for the past 15 or more years. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison, climb or take the gondola to the top of Table Mountain and any number of free time activities exclusive to the Western Cape of South Africa.
8 A-CIMCC - Culture of Healing: Infectious Diseases HIV & AIDS and TB and Suggested Itinerary events will occur just scheduled days may change Allow at least two days of travel at both the start and end of the trip. Flights take between hours to arrive from the USA to South Africa (RSA) Day 1 - The first full day in CPT. Orientation and acclimating - learning about, while visiting, some of the many cultural communities found in the Cape Town Area Day 2 HIV & AIDS awareness training: this short course focuses on what local grassroots organizations are teaching in the communities. This course is taught to participants as if they were members of a middle class community in South Africa with the purpose of breaking down fears, stigma and lack of knowledge on the issues surrounding HIV & AIDS. Day 3 - full day Township expedition - visiting 3 or 4 (time permitting) townships and learning their history during the apartheid struggle - during this trip participants will have the opportunity to meet with a sangoma - traditional healer. Day 4 - meeting and open discussions with a local HIV & AIDS support group. Participants will attend and be able to participate in discussions with a community group of HIV & AIDS activist and persons affected by HIV & AIDS. Day 5 - Participants will meet with the HIV & AIDS Student Outreach program at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. This program was developed to help emotionally support students and faculty members and community members dealing with the struggles surrounding being HIV- positive.
9 CIMCC - Culture of Healing: Infectious Diseases HIV & AIDS and TB and Day 6 - in the morning a cooperative learning session and afternoon a visit to Khayelitsha Maternity Hospital. Day 7 - is fully free to see and do what you would like to do - climb or take the tram up Table Mountain, visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison, visit the Kirechenbosch Gardens home to 10% of the worlds flora, go on a winelands tour or just walk the waterfront, shop or sleep... Day 8 - the day starts with a visit to Groote Schuur Hospital where Christiaan Barnard performed the first successful human open heart transplant. Afternoon, cooperative learning session. Day 9 - Participants will travel by private bus up the Atlantic coast to the fishing community of Saldanah. Saldanah is a community of fish canning and steel works with a high rate of HIV & AIDS. Day 10 Day at Baphumelele Children s Home Day 11 Visit the Cape of Good Hope Day 12 Morning Cooperative Learning session, afternoon free, evening closing session Day Return home or optional post program photo safari
