XII. HIV/AIDS Knowledge bout HIV Trnsmission nd Misconceptions bout HIV One of the most importnt prerequisites for reducing the rte of HIV infection is ccurte knowledge of how HIV is trnsmitted nd strtegies for preventing the trnsmission. Correct informtion is the first step towrds rising wreness nd giving dolescents nd young people the tools to protect themselves from the infection. Misconceptions bout HIV re common nd cn confuse dolescents nd young people nd hinder prevention efforts. The UN Generl Assembly Specil Session on HIV/AIDS (UNGASS) clled on governments to improve the knowledge nd skills of young people to protect themselves from HIV. The indictors to mesure this gol s well s the MDG of reducing HIV infections by hlf include improving the level of knowledge of HIV nd its prevention, nd chnging behviours to prevent further spred of the disese. HIV module ws dministered to ever mrried women 5-49 yers of ge. It my be noted tht the questions in this module often refer to the AIDS virus. This terminology is used strictly s method of dt collection to id respondents, preferred over the correct terminology of HIV tht is used here in reporting the results, where pproprite. One indictor which is both n MDG nd the Globl AIDS Response Progress Reporting (GARPR; formerly UNGASS) is the percentge of young women who hve comprehensive nd correct knowledge of HIV prevention nd trnsmission. This is defined s ) knowing tht consistent use of condom during sexul intercourse nd hving just one uninfected fithful husbnd cn reduce the chnce of getting HIV, 2) knowing tht helthy-looking person cn hve HIV, nd 3) rejecting the two most common locl misconceptions bout trnsmission/prevention of HIV. In the MICS Punjb, 204 ll ever-mrried women who hve herd of AIDS were sked questions on ll three components nd the results re detiled in Tble HA..Due to culturl sensitivities round tlking to unmrried women bout issues relting to sexul behvior nd the possibility tht this my compromise survey tem sfety nd increse survey non-response, the HIV module ws only dministered to ever-mrried women. In Punjb, 39 percent of the ever mrried women ge 5-49 yers hve herd of AIDS, higher in urbn (60%) thn in rurl res (28%). However, the percentge of women who know of both min wys of preventing HIV trnsmission using condom every time during sexul intercourse nd hving only one fithful uninfected husbnd is only 6 percent. About 24 percent of women know of hving one fithful uninfected husbnd nd 20 percent know bout using condom every time s min wys of preventing HIV trnsmission. More thn hlf of women hve herd of AIDS in Rwlpindi division compred to just over one in ten women in DG Khn division (52% nd 4%). AIDS wreness is very low (only 8%) mong women living in the households in the lowest quintile compred to 76 percent of women living in the households in the highest quintile. Similrly, wreness is low mong women from rurl res (28%) nd women with pre-school or no eduction (4%) compred to those from urbn res (60%) nd women with higher eduction (94%). P g e 8

Tble HA. lso provides the percentge of women who cn correctly identify misconceptions concerning HIV. The indictor is bsed on the two most common nd relevnt misconceptions in Punjb, tht HIV cn be trnsmitted by supernturl mens nd by mosquito bites. The tble lso provides informtion on whether the women know tht HIV cnnot be trnsmitted by shring food with someone with AIDS. Overll, 0 percent of women reject the two most common misconceptions, nd know tht helthy-looking person cn be HIV-positive. About 28 percent of the women know tht supernturl mens, nd 23 percent of women know tht mosquito bites cnnot spred HIV, while 25 percent of women know tht helthy-looking person cn be HIV-positive. More women re ble to correctly identify wys of HIV trnsmission nd misconceptions concerning HIV in urbn res, with higher eduction nd from households in the highest quintile. For exmple, only 8 percent of women with pre-school or no eduction know tht helthy looking person cn be HIV-positive compred to 67 percent of women with higher eduction. Figure HA.: Women with comprehensive knowledge of HIV trnsmission, MICS Pujb, PERCENT Punjb Rurl Urbn Knows 2 wys to prevent HIV 6 Rejected 2 most common misconceptions nd know tht helthy looking person cn be HIVpositive 5 3 Comprehensive knowledge People who hve comprehensive knowledge bout HIV prevention include those who know of the two min wys of HIV prevention (hving only one fithful uninfected husbnd nd using condom every time), who know tht helthy looking person cn be HIV-positive, nd who reject the two most common misconceptions. The comprehensive knowledge of HIV prevention methods nd trnsmission is quite low but with cler differences by re of residence. Overll, 5 percent of women were found to hve comprehensive knowledge, which ws higher in urbn res (9%) compred to rurl res (3%). The percentge of the women with comprehensive knowledge increses with their eduction level; lowest (less thn %) for women with only pre-school or no eduction nd highest (22%) mong women with higher eduction. Figure HA. summrises the informtion on comprehensive knowledge of HIV trnsmission by re. P g e 83
Tble HA.2: Knowledge of mother-to-child HIV trnsmission Percentge of ever mrried women ge 5-49 yers who correctly identify mens of HIV trnsmission from mother to child, Punjb, 204. Women should know tht HIV cn be trnsmitted during pregnncy, during delivery, nd through brestfeeding. The level of knowledge mong women ge 5-49 yers concerning mother-to-child trnsmission is presented in Tbles HA.2. Overll, 3 percent of ever mrried women know tht HIV cn be trnsmitted from mother to child. The percentge of the women who know ll three wys of mother-to-child trnsmission is 24 percent, while 8 percent did not know of ny specific wy. The proportion of women with knowledge of ll the three wys of mother-to-child trnsmission is lowest in D.G Khn division (6%) nd highest in Rwlpindi division (33%). In urbn res, the proportion of women with knowledge of ll the three wys is twice s high (36%) compred to rurl res (7%). P g e 84
Accepting Attitudes towrd People Living with HIV The indictors on ttitudes towrd people living with HIV mesure stigm nd discrimintion in the community. Stigm nd discrimintion re considered low if respondents report n ccepting ttitude on the following four questions: ) would cre for fmily member with AIDS in own home; 2) would buy fresh vegetbles from vendor who is HIV-positive; 3) thinks tht femle techer who is HIVpositive should be llowed to tech in school; nd 4) would not wnt to keep it secret if fmily member is HIV-positive. Tble HA.3: Accepting ttitudes towrd people living with HIV Percentge of ever mrried women ge 5-49 yers who hve herd of AIDS who express n ccepting ttitude towrds people living with HIV, Punjb, 204. Are willing to cre for fmily member who is HIVpositive in own home Would buy fresh vegetbles from shopkeeper or vendor who is HIVpositive Percentge of women who: Believe tht femle techer who is HIVpositive nd is not sick should be llowed to continue teching Would not wnt to keep secret tht fmily member is HIV-positive Agree with t lest one ccepting ttitude Express ccepting ttitudes on ll four indictors Number of ever mrried women ge 5-49 who hve herd of AIDS Punjb ,60 Rurl ,52 All Urbn ,089 Mjor Cities ,78 Other Urbn , , , , , ,5 Mritl Sttus Currently mrried ,984 Formerly mrried None/pre-school ,344 Primry ,459 Middle ,883 Secondry ,377 Higher ,532 Lowest Second ,284 Middle ,426 Fourth ,863 Highest ,503 Bhwlpur ,069 D.G. 6 Tble HA.3 provides dt on the ttitudes of women towrds people living with HIV. In Punjb, 96 percent of women who hve herd of AIDS gree with t lest one ccepting sttement. The most common ccepting ttitude is willing to cre for fmily member with the AIDS virus in own home (68%) followed by the women who would not wnt to keep secret tht fmily member got infected with the AIDS virus (62%). Overll, 9 percent of the women express ccepting ttitude on ll four indictors, slightly higher in urbn (2%) compred to rurl (7%). More educted women nd those living in the households in the highest quintile hve more ccepting ttitudes thn women with lower eduction nd living in the households in the lowest quintile. Informtion on women s ccepting ttitudes towrd people living with HIV/AIDS by ge is depicted in Figure HA.2. Figure HA.2: Accepting ttitudes t owrd people living with HIV/AIDS, MICS Punjb, Are willing to cre for fmily member who is HIVpositive in own home Would buy fresh vegetbles from shopkeeper or vendor who is HIV-positive Believe tht femle techer who is HIV-positive nd is not sick should be llowed to continue teching Would not wnt to keep secret tht fmily member is HIV-positive Knowledge of Plce for HIV Testing, Counselling nd Testing during Antentl Cre Another importnt indictor is the knowledge of the plce for HIV testing nd use of such services. In order to protect themselves nd to prevent infecting others, it is importnt for individuls to know their HIV sttus. Knowledge of own sttus is lso criticl fctor in the decision to seek tretment. Questions relted to knowledge of fcility for HIV testing nd whether person hs ever been tested re presented in Tble HA.4. About 9 percent of ever mrried women knew where to be tested for HIV, while lmost 2 percent of women hve ctully been tested nd bout the sme proportion of women know the result of their most recent test. A smller proportion hs been tested within the lst 2 months nd know the result (less thn percent respectively). P g e 86
Knowledge bout the plce to get tested for HIV is strongly ssocited with eduction of the women nd welth. Almost one-third of women with higher eduction, know plce to get tested (29%) compred to only 2 percent of women with pre-school or no eduction. Similrly, less thn percent of women living in the households in the lowest quintile know plce for HIV testing compred to more thn 20 percent of women living in the households in the highest quintile. Tble HA.4: Knowledge of plce for HIV testing Percentge of ever mrried women ge 5-49 yers who know where to get n HIV test, percentge who hve ever been tested, percentge who hve ever been tested nd know the result of the most recent test, percentge who hve been tested in the lst 2 months, nd percentge who hve been tested in the lst 2 months nd know the result, Punjb, 204 Percentge of women who: Know plce to get tested Hve ever been tested Hve ever been tested nd know the result of the most recent test Hve been tested in the lst 2 months Hve been tested in the lst 2 months nd know the result 2 Number of ever mrried women ge 5-49 Punjb ,855 Rurl ,06 All Urbn ,794 Mjor Cities ,295 Other Urbn , , , , , , ,50 None/pre-school ,377 Primry ,209 Middle ,25 Secondry ,277 Higher ,763 Lowest ,686 Second ,84 Middle ,94 Fourth ,97 Highest ,244 Bhwlpur ,529 D.G.
