Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) described as the conditions inside a building. entire environmental quality of a space air quality access to daylight and views pleasant acoustic conditions occupant control over lighting thermal comfort.

Indoor Environment Quality The book supports a more holistic way of evaluating indoor environments and argues that a clear understanding of how the human body and mind receive, perceive and respond to indoor conditions is needed. At the national, European and worldwide level, it is acknowledged that a healthy and comfortable indoor environment is important both for the quality of life, now and in the future, and for the creation of truly sustainable buildings. Moreover, current methods of risk assessment are no longer adequate: a different view on indoor environment is required.
Health effects of the indoor environment Building-related illnesses (BRIs):caused by biological, physical or chemical agents in indoor environments airborne infectious diseases (e.g. Pontiac fever and Legionnaires disease); hypersensitive diseases: resulting from an abnormal or maladaptive response of the immune system to a substance recognized as foreign to the body, such as allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis and hypersensitivity pneumonitis (mostly associated with fungi and bioaerosols); toxic reactions: exposures to contaminants, such as pesticides, that may lead to acute disruption of a variety of organ functions and/or increased risk of chronic diseases such as cancer.
Health effects of the indoor environment Sick building syndrome (SBS): a constellation of symptoms that have no clear etiology and are attributable to exposure to a particular building environment. Symptoms include: eye, nose and throat irritation, and the sensation of dry mucous membranes; dry, itching and red skin; headaches and mental fatigue; high frequency of airway infections and coughing; hoarseness and wheezing; nausea and dizziness; and unspecific hypersensitivity. WHO 1984
Health effects of the indoor environment Multiple chemical sensitivity: decreased tolerance that leads many individuals to report symptoms upon exposure to products and sources common in indoor environments; however, this term is still contentious. Cleaning quality measurements results comparing IEQ? Current study: OBJECTIVES: 1. Find out the best cleaning methods (incl. agents, equipment and machines) compared to IEQ 2. Good building guidelines for cleanability regarding to IEQ 3. Good, easy and usable quality measurements SIBI-hanke (Sisätiloissa käytettyjen siivouskemikaalien ja biosidien vaikutukset mitattuun ja koettuun sisäilman laatuun koulu-ja päiväkotirakennuksissa)
