face="comic Sans MS"> Hydroxyzine for dogs vs benadryl Hope on L-Tyrosine Side Effects & Adverse Reactions (List). We use cookies to ensure that we give you the best experience on our website. If you continue to use this site we will assume that you are happy with it. Got it! More info. Nausea hydroxyzine has an antiemetic effect which helps reduce nausea Anxiety hydroxyzine has an anxiolytic effect thus it can be used as a tranquilizer or mild sedative. A dog might be allergic to pollens, food products or house fleas. If he is allergic to pollen, he might have an allergic reaction just during the three weeks of the year when that pollen is active. If there is a dust mite or flea infestation in his environment, he could be affected year round. Development depends on exposure. If your dog is sneezing and scratching his hair the whole year, his living environment might be the cause. Did we miss anything? Please help us improve and share your thoughts and questions in the comments. Coma: In rare cases, a dog may go into a coma after taking hydroxyzine. A coma is likely triggered by unnecessarily high dosing of hydroxyzine and/or an interaction with another pharmaceutical medication. A dog may be able to recover from the hydroxyzineinduced coma if rushed to an emergency veterinarian. CNS-depressant drugs (such as Acepromazine) Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) (such as Selegiline) Preventic Tick collars Medications indicated for wheezing (theophylline, ephedrine, epinephrine). Allergies can affect all dogs. Terriers such as the Scottish and Cairn; the larger breeds such as Dalmatians and Irish Setters; and English Bulldogs, Pugs and Miniature Schnauzers are particularly susceptible. Balance / coordination loss: Since hydroxyzine depresses activity in the CNS, and has been noted to impair fine motor skills in humans, it may cause balance and/or coordination difficulties in dogs. If your dog appears unable to balance, is walking into furniture, and appears similar to a drunken human the effects of hydroxyzine may be too potent for your dog to handle. Perhaps an easy solution to balance and/or coordination problems is to simply talk to your veterinarian and work with him/her to reduce the dosage. Dog medicine should also be taken in conjunction with a diet that will compliment the antihistamine best. Dogs that eat a diet rich in fatty acids show heightened response to antihistamines. Hydroxyzine is also used to address the following conditions in dogs:. Shevila on Remeron (Mirtazapine) Withdrawal Symptoms + How Long They Last. Previous post: Hydroxyzine Side Effects & Adverse Reactions (List). Steroids are used for both long- and short-term allergy treatment. Dogs with severe chronic allergies may require long-term use of steroids while acute allergic reactions only need a short course. Steroids are most effective when treating severe itching or inflammation. Despite their efficacy, your vet won't immediately give your dog steroids for a chronic condition unless other treatments haven't worked. Steroids should only be used under the close supervision of your vet. Steroids are a potent drug and shouldn't be used at the drop of a hat. Corticosteroids have a variety of side effects, including a sharply increased appetite, increased
thirst/urination, depression or hyperactivity, panting, and diarrhea. Side effects appearing during short courses of corticosteroid therapy will go away once the dog is done taking the drug, but long-term use risks permanent damage. Higher doses suppress the immune system, increasing the risk of a variety of infections. Other dogs experience dry, itchy skin. More seriously, steroids can cause diabetes, adrenal suppression, and liver damage. This is why vets are conservative in their use of steroids. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Learn how your comment data is processed. When choosing an antihistamine for dogs, consider the side effects as well as the benefits of each different antihistamine. Most medications will cause drowsiness, while others such as Chlorpheniramine might also cause tiredness, lethargy and diarrhea. Since Hydroxyzine is a more aggressive and variegated antihistamine, its side effects range widely from drowsiness to seizures to nausea. Your dog's response to antihistamines will vary, depending on his size and the given dose. Biotin is a B vitamin that aids in the health of skin and hair. Studies show dogs find relief from dry skin or seborrhea when their diet is supplemented with biotin. When used in conjunction with omega-3 fatty acids, it helps relieve dry, itchy skin. Biotin supplements for dogs are available, but it's found naturally in brewer's yeast. Allergies may come and go or they can be a lifelong battle for you and your dog. Figuring out your dog's triggers may take allergy testing and a lot of medication trials, but knowing the root of your dog's misery goes a long way in giving them a comfortable life and alleviating their symptoms. Vomiting: In clinical research, one study reported that 2 dogs vomited after hydroxyzine administration. It is unclear as to whether hydroxyzine specifically prompted the vomiting though. That said, it should be speculated that some dogs may not tolerate hydroxyzine as well as others, and vomit as a result. Migraines, back pain, and general wear and tear on your body often leave you reaching for your favorite pain reliever[. ]. Since histamine is the chief irritating chemical in allergies, an agent that works against it, such as antihistamine, proves highly effective. The most common antihistamine is benadryl, or diphendyramine. Many dog owners use benadryl as their dog medicine, as it effectively stops itching, reduces swelling and fights airborne allergens. Dog owners and vets recommend a 1mg/lb dose for best results. Make sure the only active ingredient inbenadryl is diphenhydramine. Some other benadryl products such as Benadryl for Colds contains alcohol, which could impede further recovery. 1 mg/lb bodyweight (2 mg/kg body weight) given every 6 to 8 hours. Twitching: It is known that humans taking high doses of hydroxyzine are prone to involuntary tremors. Reports indicate that some dogs may exhibit involuntary muscle twitching as an adverse reaction to hydroxyzine. Obviously if your dog starts to twitch after hydroxyzine administration, immediate attention from a veterinarian is advised. David on Amitriptyline (Elavil) Withdrawal Symptoms + How Long Do They Last?. A: Zyrtec-D is a combination tablet of an antihistamine (Zyrtec) and a decongestant (pseudoephedrine). Antihistamines help with sneezing, runny noses and drainage. Decongestants help relieve pressure and pain in the sinuses. Zyrtec or the antihistamine portion has a potential to cause some drowsiness and dry mouth. Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) can cause difficulty sleeping, nausea, and loss of appetite. Individuals with high blood pressure or heart disease should not take anything with decongestants because it can raise blood pressure and heart rate. Zyrtec-D should be taken with a full glass of water either with or without food. Zyrtec-D can be taken every 12 hours and no more than 2 tablets in 24 hours. For information on allergies visit Everyday Health at the link // and for information on Zyrtec visit
// Kimberly Hotz, PharmD. Zyrtec is given as a single daily dose at a time during the day that works for you. It's available as 5 milligrams (mg) and 10 mg tablets, 1 mg/ml syrup, and 5 mg and 10 mg chewable tablets, which can be taken with or without water and without regard to food consumption. Adults and TEENren 12 years and older are recommended an initial dose of 5 mg or 10 mg per day, depending on how severe their symptoms are. Zyrtec in TEENren The following are recommended doses of Zyrtec for TEENren, but talk to your pediatrician about correct dosage for your TEEN. 6 to 18 years old: The recommended initial dose of Zyrtec is 5 mg or 10 mg once daily depending on how severe their symptoms are. 2 to 5 years old: The recommended initial dose of Zyrtec is 2.5 mg (½ teaspoon) syrup once daily. The dosage in this age group can be increased to a maximum dose of 5 mg per day given as 1 teaspoon syrup once a day or one ½ teaspoon syrup given every 12 hours, or one 5 mg chewable tablet once a day. 6 months to 2 years old: Syrup is recommended for TEENren under 2 years old. The recommended dose of Zyrtec syrup in TEENren 6 months to 23 months of age is 2.5 mg (½ teaspoon) once daily. The dose in TEENren 12 to 23 months of age can be increased to a maximum dose of 5 mg per day, given as ½ teaspoon (2.5 mg) every 12 hours. Zyrtec in People with Renal and Hepatic Impairment For people 12 years of age and older with decreased renal (TEENney) function who are on TEENney dialysis or who have hepatic (liver) problems, 5 mg once daily is recommended. TEENren 6 to 18 years old with impaired TEENney or liver function should use the lower recommended dose. TEENren under 6 years old with impaired TEENney or liver function should not take Zyrtec. Zyrtec in Geriatric Patients For people 77 years and older, 5 mg once daily is recommended. Zyrtec Overdose If you or someone you know takes too much Zyrtec, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include severe drowsiness. TEENren may display mood changes, A: The recent recall on TEENren's Zyrtec was on the liquid only. These include 4 oz. bubblegum syrup, 4 oz. grape syrup, 0.5 oz. grape, 0.5 oz. bubblegum, and 2 x 4oz. bubblegum. The recall was issued because the products did not meet the quality standards and one result was possible higher doses in the ingredients. To contact the company, McNeil, you can reach them at or Patti Brown, PharmD. Q: What are the side effects of Zyrtec-D?. A: Zyrtec (cetirizine) is an antihistamine used in the treatment of allergies, hay fever, angioedema, and urticaria. The most common side effect in patients aged 12 years and older with Zyrtec is somnolence. Additional infrequent (less than 2%) side effects with Zyrtec include increased weight. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic (water pill) commonly used in the treatment of high blood pressure. Side effects with hydrochlorothiazide include hypokalemia, high blood sugar, hyperlipidemia, headache, nausea/vomiting, photosensitivity, and weight gain. A: Specific treatment for allergies will be determined by your TEEN's physician based on the following: your TEEN's age, overall health, medical history, and severity of the allergic, reaction, your TEEN's tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies. The three most effective ways to treat allergies are avoidance, immunotherapy, and medication. Immunotherapy is a type of treatment for allergic TEENren with hay fever and/or asthma. It is also called desensitization. Hyposensitization, and allergy shots is a mixture of the various pollens, mold spores, animal danders, Zyrtec is the brand name of cetirizine, an over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamine used to treat cold and allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes, or runny nose. Cetirizine is also used to treat itching and swelling caused by chronic hives. Manufactured by McNeil-PPC, Inc, Zyrtec comes in
the form of tablets, chewable tablets, and syrup. Zyrtec was a prescription medication until 2007 when The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it as an OTC medication. Following the approval, Zyrtec was reportedly the highest-grossing new non-food product of 2008 in the United States. Zyrtec-D Zyrtec-D is a combination of the main ingredient of Zyrtec (cetirizine) with the decongestant pseudoephedrine and is approved to treat cold or allergy symptoms, including: Nasal and sinus congestion Sneezing Itching Watery eyes Runny nose Side effects of Zyrtec-D include: Dry mouth Dizziness Drowsiness Tiredness Nausea Stomach pain Constipation Tinnitus Zyrtec-D Dosing and Pregnancy Adults and TEENren 12 years and over should take 1 tablet of Zyrtec-D every 12 hours and not more than 2 tablets over a 24-hour period. The effects of Zyrtec-D use on an unborn baby are not known. However, the active ingredients can pass into breast milk. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during your treatment, talk to your doctor before taking Zyrtec-D. Zyrtec vs. Claritin Zyrtec and Claritin, which are both over-the-counter allergy medications (no prescription is needed to use them), are often confused with one another and some people even use them interchangeably. Although they have similar effects for those who use them, each of these drugs has different ingredients (cetirizine for Zyrtec and loratadine for Claritin), and may cause different side effects in certain people. If you are taking other medications, or if you have liver or TEENney problems, talk to your doctor before taking either Zyrtec or Claritin. Zyrtec for Dogs Zyrtec is sometimes used to treat dermatitis in dogs, under the supervision of a veterinarian, alth. A: Zyrtec (cetirizine) is an antihistamine used in the treatment of allergies, hay fever, angioedema, and urticaria. The most common side effect in patients aged 12 years and older with Zyrtec is somnolence. Lisinopril (Zestril, Prinivil) is a drug of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor class that is primarily used in treatment of hypertension, congestive heart failure, heart attacks and also in preventing renal and retinal complications of diabetes. Common side effects include headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, dry cough, and blurred vision. Generally speaking, drug interactions fall into three main categories: Drug-drug (i.e., prescription, over-the-counter, herbals, dietary supplements) interactions occur when two or more drugs react with each other. Drug-diet (food/drink) interactions result from drugs reacting with foods or drinks. Drugdisease interactions may occur when an existing medical condition makes certain drugs potentially harmful. Patients should be counseled to avoid hazardous activities requiring mental alertness and motor coordination until they know how these agents affect them, and to notify their physician if they experience excessive or prolonged central nervous system (CNS) effects that interfere with their normal activities. For more specific information, consult with your doctor or pharmacist for guidance based on your specific condition and current medications. Shereen A. Gharbia, PharmD. Q: Sometimes I take Zyrtec 10mg tabs twice a day. Is that okay? Q: My granddaughter, who is 20 months old, has a cough and running nose. Doctors feel it might be allergies. What is the possible treatment? She is now taking Zyrtec. Q: Sometimes I take Zyrtec 10 mg tablets twice a day. Is that okay? Q: I'm 24 weeks pregnant. Is it okay to take Zyrtec during pregnancy? If not, can you tell me what allergy medicines are okay to take during pregnancy? A: Zyrtec (cetirizine) is a second generation antihistamine. Another similar drug would be fexofenadine (Allegra) or loratadine (Claritin). You will find that generic medications in this class are much less expensive than the brand name products in this class. For additional information: // A: I have reviewed your question regarding Zyrtec (cetirizine). The normal adult dose is 5mg to 10mg taken at
the same time each day. I cannot recommend taking more than the recommended dosage. Studies show that the 1/2 life of Zyrtec (half of the medication still in the body and not eliminated) is around 8 hours. Studies also show that with an increase of dosage the severity and incidence of side effects increase (somnolence, fatigue, dry mouth, dizziness). With any dosage of Zyrtec, use caution when driving or operating machinery. For any immediate concerns, contact your health care provider. A: An uncommon side effect of Zyrtec is weight gain, occurring in less than 2 percent of patients taking the medication. Since the incidence is uncommon, it is not known whether the medication or other factors caused the weight gain. There is no report of weight gain with Vaseretic. If you have any sudden weight gain, you should consult your physician to rule out any other causes of the problem. A: Antihistamines, including Zyrtec (cetirizine), are commonly used to treat allergic rhinitis and hives. These medicines reduce allergic symptoms by blocking the action of histamine, which is a chemical released during an allergic reaction. Antihistamines can be classified as sedating or non-sedating. Zyrtec is considered non-sedating. Non-sedating antihistamines are available both over-the-counter and prescription. Some people find they have to change non-sedating antihistamines to get better results. So, you could try another over-the-counter brand of antihistamine, such as Claritin (loratadine). You could also consult your health care provider to see what prescription options may be appropriate for you based on your specific circumstances. You can find detailed information about other allergy medications at // Always read and follow the complete directions and warnings on over-the-counter medications and discuss their use with your health care provider before taking them. Sarah McKenney Lewis, PharmD, PharmD. Q: I read the other day that Zyrtec and hydrochlorothiazide (HCT, diuretic) can cause weight gain. I am struggling to lose any weight; could this be the cause? A: For Zyrtec (cetirizine), the normal adult dose is 5mg to 10mg daily, taken at the same time each day. I cannot recommend taking more than the recommended dosage. Studies show that the half-life of Zyrtec (half of the medication still in the body and not eliminated) is around 8 hours. Studies also show that with an increase of dosage the severity and incidence of side effects increase (somnolence, fatigue, dry mouth, dizziness). With any dosage of Zyrtec, use caution driving or operating machinery. A: Zyrtec-D and Allegra-D are antihistamines that stop the production of the natural chemical histamine in the body. There are no real differences in effectiveness between the two medications. Certain health conditions can interact with Zyrtec such as narrow-angle glaucoma, high blood pressure, severe coronary artery disease, troubles urinating or allergy to hydralazine. Certain health conditions can interact with Allegra, such as TEENney disease, glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure, enlarged prostate, bladder problems and thyroid disorders. Allegra D has more side effects associated with it than Zyrtec D. The only real difference between the side effects is Zyrtec may cause more drowsiness than Allegra in some patients. If you do not have any health conditions that may interact with Zyrtec-D, there should be no reason to avoid the product. Just be aware of the drowsiness factor, although well below that of the older antihistamines like Benadryl, and doing any risky behaviors like driving until you know how it affects you. Lori Mendoza, PharmD Poulin, PharmD. Q: Does the recent Zyrtec recall include tablets or only liquid?. Q: I am currently on prescription Allegra-D 12-hour. I have been told that Zyrtec-D is the same. It is more convenient for me. Is there a reason that I shouldn't switch to Zyrtec? Q: Does Zyrtec or Vaseretic
promote weight gain?.
