1 Issue 4387, March 2013 Next club meeting: March 25 th, 2013, 7:00 pm, West Side Café, Camp Bowie Blvd Presidents Corner: by Ken Knotts SAE!! SAE completed on Sunday, March 18. First, thanks to everyone who volunteered and made this contest a success for the college engineering students from around the globe. Tom Blakeney, Randy Davis and Oliver Alvarado did a fantastic job of organizing the event, then reorganizing when needed. Volunteers who made the field ready, put up signs, performed inspections, manned gates, directed traffic, purchased drinks, water and ice, passed out lunches, directed students, piloted aircraft for teams, retrieved downed airplanes, fueled and defueled aircraft, and flagged the lines for successful liftoff and turns are some of the people who made this event successful. Then after hours and days of work on the contest, they took all the equipment down, cleaned the field, and restored all equipment to its proper place. Few people realize the amount of effort that goes into this event. Some even use vacation time from their job to volunteer and put in countless hours getting things ready for the three days the students are here. After that, you give up the field for weekend flying. The club makes some money for putting on the contest for all your efforts. The students provided some innovative aircraft and unique designs. They also provided some spectacular crashes as always. The winds with gusts to 33 MPH on Saturday likely added to the probability of demise of some aircraft. Thanks to everyone who had a part in making this event a successful one. Some might think it is a fuel additive that could cause the engine to flame out unexpectedly.

When Urushiol oil comes in contact with the skin it causes a rash called contact dermatitis.

These symptoms usually appear within 48 hours after your contact with the Urushiol, but it can occur within 5 hours or may take up to 15 days after contact.

Some might think it is a fuel additive that could cause the engine to flame out unexpectedly. Others might think that is was an inferior grade of lubricant that causes premature engine wear. Neither one is even close. When Urushiol oil comes in contact with the skin it causes a rash called contact dermatitis. The itchy rash show up as lines or streaks and is marked by fluid-filled bumps (blisters) or large raised areas (hives). These symptoms usually appear within 48 hours after your contact with the Urushiol, but it can occur within 5 hours or may take up to 15 days after contact. The rash is not contagious, so you cannot spread a rash after it appears, even if you touch it or the blisters. By now, most of you have figured out that I am talking about contact with poison oak, poison ivy, or poison sumac. Of the three; poison sumac is the least common since it is only found in wetlands therefore not much of a threat to us here in Texas. The other two; poison oak and poison ivy are very common but easy to avoid if you know what they look like. The following phrases should help.

1. Leaves of three, let it be. should remind you of the danger. 2. Longer middle stem, stay away from them. This refers to the middle leaflet having a visibly longer stem than the two side leaflets.

Berries white, run in fright. Or Berries white, danger in sight. 6. Red leaflets in spring, it s a dangerous thing. In spring new leaflets sometimes appear reddish in color. 7.

This refers to the appearance that some (not all) poison ivy leaves, where each of the two side leaves have a small notch that makes the leaflet look like a mitten with a thumb. 8.

If it s got hair, it won t be fair. This refers to the hair that can be on the stem and leaves of poison ivy. Here are some pictures of poison ivy to help you identify this hazard. It is very common and can be found in most areas of the country. (My daughter had it growing in her back yard and didn t know it.) Note: the middle picture showing the mittens shape of the two side leaves. I couldn t find any pictures of ivy showing the white berries, but I did see the berries on the plants in my daughters back yard. I didn t include many pictures of poison oak since in this area; poison ivy is the more common. Below is a picture of the three poisonous plants. Avoid these when hunting for your aircraft. 9 SPA Contest April is our first SPA event of the year. Remember Practice..Practice..Practice. WarBird Flyin Dust off that warbird it s that time of year again. Saturday May 4 th will be the 17 th year of our Warbird Flyin. Registered pilots have grown in number from the original 13 to a maximum of 72. This is a low key, no pressure event that welcomes all types of warbirds, both fixed and rotary winged, from WWI thru the present. Fly if you want to, or just visit with other modelers that share your interests. Free lunch, pilot give-a-ways, great big band music, and as always promotions. 12 Membership Application and Renewal Form This form is the approved application form for all existing and new members. There is no initiation fee for new members. Your membership is valid from 1 January to 31 December each year. After July 1 st New Individual and Family memberships 50% of rates shown below: 1. A current Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) membership card is required to fly at the flying site. 2. Only an AMA membership card may be placed in the frequency board. 3. All members except Honorary, Junior, Family and Associate are eligible to vote in club business. 4. Family Membership dues are $10 higher than individual. 5. Note: Partial Payments cannot be accepted 6. All members should also purchase the Association Membership Badge at a cost of $ Membership Types (Circle Membership Requested) Individual Member ---- $ Membership Badge $13.00 each Total $ The individual member is a single membership. An individual has all rights and privileges. New Members joining after July 1st will pay a minimum of $50.00 for the remainder of the year.
