3 Disposable Glove Key Terms Powdered USP absorbable dus.ng powder, FDA accepted. Composed of cornstarch. Eases on/off of glove. Keeps gloves from s.cking together. Can leave residue on hands. Powder Free Non- powdered gloves usually treated with chlorine wash and/ or polymer coa.ng processes. The latex protein content is substan.ally removed from the glove when these processes are used to remove powder. Eases on/off of glove. Two treatment opeons for Powder Free Gloves: Chlorinated Gloves washed in a chlorine gas/water mix and hardens the surface of the glove which reduces surface fric.on and tack on the interior of the glove. Removes powder and breaks down proteins such a latex. For ease on/off of glove. Polymer coated Dipped in a polymer compound to replace majority/all of chlorina.on process. Ease in on/off of glove. More recently used. Both chlorina.on and polymer coa.ngs are effec.ve at crea.ng a glove that dons and doffs easily. Done correctly, both processes yield gloves that exceed FDA and ASTM standards for hand protec.on.

4 Disposable Glove Key Terms ConEnued AQL Acceptable Quality Level usually relates to major defects (pinholes). 1.5% AQL is minimal for exam grade gloves. ElongaEon Measurement of the length of a glove can be stretched before it breaks. It is expressed as a percent of the original length of the glove at the moment it breaks. The higher the percentage the more stretchable the glove material. Tensile Strength Measurement of the amount of force or pull required to break a glove. Tensile expressed in Mpa, the higher the number, the stronger the glove material. Protein Content Measurable amount of proteins in latex gloves. Usually measured in milligrams of protein per gram of latex. Lower is beyer. Most medical grade gloves now register protein < 50mg/g. Rolled Cuff Cuff where end is rolled for added strength in donning a glove. SyntheEc Man- made non- latex material. Term some.mes used to describe vinyl, nitrile, neoprene or stretch vinyl.

5 Disposable Glove Key Terms ConEnued Exam Grade Gloves manufactured and tested to less than 1.5% AQL (pinholes) and also meets 510K medical standard. General Purpose Gloves that are either in excess of 1.5% AQL or not tested to meet that standard. Wide variety of AQL levels are possible. Impact General Purpose gloves are off exam lines but not individually tested as exam gloves.

8 Latex Gloves Latex is common term for natural rubber latex gloves (NRL) NRL is the processed plant product from the milky fluid derived from Hevea braziliensis trees. These trees are primarily found in Southeast Asia and Africa

9 Latex Manufacturing Simple Version Liquid latex is compounded with other ingredients to aid in manufacture. Large conenuous moeon machines with ceramic formers are dipped into the latex. Gloves are cured in a long oven and then removed and placed into boxes for shipping. Raw liquid latex comprises over 50% of the final cost of a glove. Energy and labor are the next highest costs

10 Latex Health Issues Latex s chemical composieon includes proteins which are the cause of allergic reaceons including: Irritant contact dermaees: The most common reaceon causes dry, itchy, irritated areas. Allergic contact dermaees: (delayed hypersensievity) skin reaceons similar to poison ivy caused from exposure to chemicals added to latex to facilitate the manufacture of latex gloves. Latex allergies are serious health issues

11 Additional Latex Glove issues Powdered gloves increase the risk of allergic reaceon as they absorb protein from the glove which can be le[ in skin pores or become airborne when removed and then inhaled. Lower quality latex gloves have higher protein levels.

12 Why was Latex so Predominant? Latex gloves were the first disposable gloves to be produced and used (first in the market). Latex gloves provide be\er barrier proteceon from blood borne pathogens than the second glove on the market vinyl. (more universal benefits) The above two factors influenced the choice when the AIDS scare and OSHA regulaeons exploded the demand for hand proteceon in the early 1990 s.
